Use of bio-based products towards more sustainable road paving binders: A state-of-the-art review

Many industrial sectors exploit fossil sources to develop useful and necessary materials for our needs,such as bituminous paving ***,a key component of asphalt mixtures,is derived from oil refining and its properties are influenced by the crude oil source and refining process,resulting in a significant carbon *** growing awareness of resource depletion and environmental concerns,pavement researchers are exploring sustainable alternatives to reduce dependence on fossil *** includes a rising trend in using renewable materials like biomasses to produce bio-based binders as substitutes for bitumen,aiming for a more sustainable ***,including vegetal and animal wastes,and waste cooking oils,as substitutes for crude oil in the production of *** thermochemical conversion(TCC),such as pyrolysis,biomasses can be converted into bio-char and bio-oils,which can replace fossil-based components in *** have utilized these bio-products to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels in ***,there are no set minimum requirements for bio-components in bio-based *** the percentage of replaced bitumen increases,various types of binders are produced,including modified bitumen,extended bitumen,and alternative binders,where the fossil replacement is *** rheological tests on bio-binders,reveal that those containing biochar exhibit increased viscosity,stiffness,rutting resistance,and sometimes antioxidant ***,bio-binders with bio-oils as bitumen substitutes show poorer performance at high temperatures but improved behavior at low *** results suggest that bio-binders could provide versatile solutions for various climatic and loading conditions in road ***,the development of pavement mixtures based on bio-binders has not been studied in depth and requires further attention to unlock its full *** sustainability considerations,includin

Background:Parkinson’s disease(PD)is a neurodegenerative disorder whose diagnosis is often challenging because symptoms may overlap with neurodegenerative *** is characterized by intraneuronal accumulation of abnormalα-synuclein in brainstem while neurodegenerative parkinsonisms might be associated with accumulation of eitherα-synuclein,as in the case of Multiple System Atrophy(MSA)or tau,as in the case of Corticobasal Degeneration(CBD)and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy(PSP),in other disease-specific brain *** diagnosis of all these diseases can be formulated only neuropathologically by detection and localization ofα-synuclein or tau aggregates in the *** evidence suggests that trace-amount of these proteins can appear in peripheral tissues,including receptor neurons of the olfactory mucosa(OM).Methods:We have set and standardized the experimental conditions to extend the ultrasensitive Real Time Quaking Induced Conversion(RT-QuIC)assay for OM *** particular,by using human recombinantα-synuclein as substrate of reaction,we have assessed the ability of OM collected from patients with clinical diagnoses of PD and MSA to induceα-synuclein aggregation,and compared their seeding ability to that of OM samples collected from patients with clinical diagnoses of CBD and ***:Our results showed that a significant percentage of MSA and PD samples inducedα-synuclein aggregation with high efficiency,but also few samples of patients with the clinical diagnosis of CBD and PSP caused the same ***,the final RT-QuIC aggregates obtained from MSA and PD samples owned peculiar biochemical and morphological features potentially enabling their ***:Our study provide the proof-of-concept that olfactory mucosa samples collected from patients with PD and MSA possess important seeding activities forα-*** studies are required for(i)estimating sensitivity and specificity of the technique and
