Modeling effects of abiotic factors on the abundances of eight woody species in the Harana forest using artificial networks,random forest,and generalized linear models

Background Abiotic factors exert different impacts on the abundance of individual tree species in the forest but little has been known about the impact of abiotic factors on the individual plant,particularly,in a tropical *** study identified the impact of abiotic factors on the abundances of Podocarpus falcatus,Croton macrostachyus,Celtis africana,Syzygium guineense,Olea capensis,Diospyros abyssinica,Feliucium decipenses,and Coffea arabica.A systematic sample design was used in the Harana forest,where 1122 plots were established to collect the abundance of *** forest(RF),artificial neural network(ANN),and generalized linear model(GLM)models were used to examine the impacts of topographic,climatic,and edaphic factors on the log abundances of woody *** RF model was used to predict the spatial distribution maps of the log abundances of each *** The RF model achieved a better prediction accuracy with R^(2)=71%and a mean squared error(MSE)of 0.28 for Feliucium *** RF model differentiated elevation,temperature,precipitation,clay,and potassium were the top variables that influenced the abundance of *** ANN model showed that elevation induced a nega-tive impact on the log abundances of all woody *** GLM model reaffirmed the negative impact of elevation on all woody species except the log abundances of Syzygium guineense and Olea *** ANN model indicated that soil organic matter(SOM)could positively affect the log abundances of all woody *** GLM showed a similar positive impact of SOM,except for a negative impact on the log abundance of Celtis africana at p<*** spatial distributions of the log abundances of Coffee arabica,Filicium decipenses,and Celtis africana were confined to the eastern parts,while the log abundance of Olea capensis was limited to the western *** The impacts of abiotic factors on the abundance of woody species may vary with *** ecological underst

Voids size distribution in gelled waxy crude oil under dynamic and static cooling

Waxy crude oil is known for its high wax contents that can potentially result in gelling following sufficient cooling of the transportation line in the subsea bed at offshore *** gelling over the entire lines requires an accurately predicted restart pressure to restart the clogged and idle ***,the common way of predicting the restart pressure has been reported to result in over-designed and predicted piping *** research findings evidenced the formation of voids which would reduce the restart pressure *** study conducted in this paper is aimed at investigating the voids size distribution in gelled crude oil across and along transportation *** of experiments simulating crude oil transportation during both static and dynamic cooling were *** gelled crude oil below the pour point temperature was then scanned using a Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)system to detect the voids *** resulting voids at each scanning cross-section were quantified,and their distributions were *** was observed that dynamic cooling had minimal impacts on the voids size difference along the pipeline with the difference in voids areas within 10 mm^(2) to be twice and uniform for the entire flow rates ***,voids size in statically cooled waxy crude oil was found to be highly distributed with a maximum of 6 voids size distribution in 10 mm2 *** low-end temperature had the highest size difference while the difference was decreasing with higher end *** study shows that the voids amount in dynamically cooled waxy crude oil could also be estimated with lower numbers of cross-sectional voids ***,the higher cross-sectional voids detection is recommended while estimating voids in statically cooled waxy crude oil.

Public Perception on the Role of Urban Green Infrastructure Development and Land Use Management in Rapidly Urbanized Countries:The Case of Hawassa City,Ethiopia

Urban green areas are essential elements of cities and contribute to the quality of life in numerous ways by maintaining and regulating the ***,increased urbanization and development have placed urban green areas under extreme pressure,while unplanned urban growth has resulted in the loss of urban landscape and *** study’s objective was the public perception on the role of urban green infrastructure and land use *** 385 sample households were selected by using random sampling *** and econometric analyses were used for analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data by using SPSS version *** the major factors influencing the urban green infrastructure by respondents perception were education,income,family size,sex of respondent,marital status,type of employment,ownership of house,participation on public involvement,and frequency of visit to nearer planning which are significant variables in the *** visited the given green structure at least twice a week,and those not done it were 47.9% and 52.1%.The amount of individuals who visited it twice a week in positive perceivers was 64%,and the amount of those who have not done it was 36%.The Chi-square value of 10.9 was very big and telling us that the frequency of visit was determinant factor of *** is vital to keep in mind that while the built-up area and the agricultural areas are rising due to urbanization,the core-ecosystem land is being“eaten”as a result of the past and present land uses inside the administrative limits,as well as the services they *** the last 6 years,the rate at which the most precious ecosystems are disappearing has *** population,which reflects the demand for these services and benefits,is still growing,putting more strain on the *** recommendations include:Public involvement in urban green space planning and development was determinant and core variable of the *** government of the

Land Use Land Cover Change Detection and Deforestation Modeling: In Delomena District of Bale Zone, Ethiopia

Previous studies in Delo-Mena district failed to provide conceptual framework about causes and impacts of deforestation including prediction of spatial location of future deforestation. The study was aimed at investigating spatiotemporal dynamics and prediction of future trends of deforestation in this area. Three periods Landsat images were downloaded and preprocessed using ENVI 4.3. Supervised classification technique was employed for image classification. Land Change Modular used to predict deforestation based on transition between 2000 and 2015 along three driving variables (road distance, settlement and soil). Six land-use land-cover classes were classified for three periods. The result indicated that the forest areas were 91,339, 73,274 and 70,481 hectors in year 2000, 2010 and 2015, respectively. This forest area was reduced by 20% between 2000 and 2010 at annual rate of 2%. Between 2010 and 2015, a forest area was lost by 4% with annual rate of 1%. This deforestation rate was greater than global rates and was lower than rates of south eastern African countries. Farmland expansion was a major cause of deforestation contributed to the annual forest loss by 4.9% and 36% over different periods. In 2030, about 33,243 hectors of a forest area would be expected to disappear that implied emission of about 17 million ton of carbon dioxide. Fuelwoods shortage and loss of biodiversity were perceived as impacts of deforestation. Farm-land and settlement were found increasing at expense of vegetation. Forest plantation, supply of fuel efficient technology and community mobilization were recommended that would be emphasized by the forestry sector based at the district office.

Evaluation of modified adaptive k-means segmentation algorithm

Segmentation is the act of partitioning an image into different regions by creating boundaries between regions.k-means image segmentation is the simplest prevalent ***,the segmentation quality is contingent on the initial parameters(the cluster centers and their number).In this paper,a convolution-based modified adaptive k-means(MAKM)approach is proposed and evaluated using images collected from different sources(MATLAB,Berkeley image database,VOC2012,BGH,MIAS,and MRI).The evaluation shows that the proposed algorithm is superior to k-means++,fuzzy c-means,histogrambased k-means,and subtractive k-means algorithms in terms of image segmentation quality(Q-value),computational cost,and *** proposed algorithm was also compared to state-of-the-art learning-based methods in terms of IoU and MIoU;it achieved a higher MIoU value.

Effect of border planting of Eucalyptus citriodora Hook. on the growth and biomass production performance of Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt ex Bor Grass at Wondo Genet,Southern Ethiopia

The use of Eucalyptus trees, in association with other plants, has the potential to reduce the growth of neighbouring plants or grasses by competing for resources or releasing allelochemicals that may cause other plants to grow slowly. Our purpose here is to assess whether border planting of Eucalyptus is harmful to the establishment,growth, and production of Cymbopogon winterianus at various distances from tree lines in the Wondo Genet Agricultural Research Center in Southern Ethiopia. Several factors were studied: growth performances and yield of aromatic grasses; soil properties, including total nitrogen,organic carbon, and moisture content; and plant leaf nutrient content(NPK) at various distances away from the Eucalyptus citriodora border line were studied. Chemical compositions of hydro-distilled essential oils obtained from selected C. winterianus grasses leaves were analysed by gas chromatography. Plant height, biomass yield, amount of essential oil yield, and essential oil composition all were significantly affected due to Eucalyptus effect in the first10-m distance as compared to beyond 10 m from the tree border line. There were increases in soil total nitrogen,organic carbon, and moisture content with decreasing distances to the Eucalyptus tree border. The result of plant leaf nutrient content(NPK) differed across treatment and distance. The pot experiment(15 cm 9 20 cm), shoot length,and number of leaves of aromatic plants varied in the degree of inhibition based on the concentration of the aqueous extract. Significantly higher inhibitions of the shoot length and number of leaf parameters were observed when using 25% fresh leaf extract compared to other extract levels.

Larvicidal activities of chinaberry,neem and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis(Bti) to an insecticide resistant population of Anopheles arabiensis from Tolay,Southwest Ethiopia

Objective:To elucidate the larvicidal potency of neem, chinaberry and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis(Bti) to larvae of Anopheles arabiensis under semi-field condition and adult susceptibility/resistance to the conventionally used insecticides in Tolay,Southwestern ***: Wild collected 3rd and 4th stage larvae were exposed to neem, and chinaberry seed powder dissolved in water and Bti in artificial containers at three treatment levels:0.2, 0.1 and 0.05 g/m^2 and controls were free of treatments. Larval and pupal mortalities were monitored daily and residual activities were determined. The experiments were replicated three times. The World Health Organization tube test for all classes of insecticides was conducted on adult Anopheles arabiensis reared from field collected larvae and pupae. Data were analyzed using STATA software version ***: In the first application, neem powder caused 88.9%, 87.9% and 79.4% larval and pupal mortality at 0.2, 0.1 and 0.05 g/m^2 after 4.3, 6.0 and 5.7 days, respectively. The corresponding killing effect of chinaberry was 80.3%, 62.1% and 30.3% after 7.0, 7.7 and 8.3days respectively. Bti at all treatments killed 100% after 24 h except 2.7 days for 0.05 g/m^*** mosquitoes were susceptible only for fenitrothion and pirimiphos-methyl with 100%mortality while resistant to deltamethrin, alpha-cypermethrin, etofenprox and dichlorodiphenyl-tricgloroethane with only 9.0%, 3.0%, 5.1% and 2.0% mortalities ***: Neem, chinaberry and Bti showed potent larvicidal and pupicidal activities. However, in the area, high level of mosquito resistance to pyrethroids and dichlorodiphenyl-tricgloroethane was seen which will pose serious challenge to vector control in the future. Therefore, using integrated approach including these botanical larvicides is warranted to manage insecticide resistance.

Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Type 1 DM: A Novel Presentation of CML

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of diabetes characterized by metabolic acidosis, hyperglycemia, and ketosis. It most commonly occurs secondary to a precipitating event such as an infection, non-infectious illness, or insulin non-compliance. We report a case of a 28-year-old male with a history of well-controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus who began having frequent and repeated episodes of DKA. Evaluation for compliance lapses was negative. The further review noted a worsening white blood cell count over the same period, despite repeated negative infectious workups. A bone marrow biopsy revealed a hypercellular marrow with granulocyte and megakaryocyte proliferation. Testing for the BCR-ABL fusion gene was positive in 92% of cells. This led to a final diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukemia as the precipitator for repeated presentation with DKA. The two diseases do not commonly present simultaneously due to differences in median age. No previous reports of adults with DKA precipitated by CML are present in the literature. However, worsening hyperglycemia has been reported with other hematologic malignancies, particularly in the setting of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the pediatric population. This is thought in some instances to be due to the leukemic process itself, potentially through cytokine release.
