The Gsα/cAMP signaling pathway mediates the effect of a variety of hormones and factors that regulate the homeostasis of the post-natal ***,the dysregulated activity of Gsαdue to gain-of-function mutations (R201C/R201H)results in severe architectural and functional derangements of the entire bone/bone marrow *** the consequences of gain-of-function mutations of Gsαhave been extensively investigated in osteoblasts and in bone marrow osteoprogenitor cells at various differentiation stages,their effect in adipogenically-committed bone marrow stromal cells has remained *** generated a mouse model with expression of Gsα^(R201C) driven by the Adiponectin(Adq)***-Gsα^(R201C) mice developed a complex combination of metaphyseal,diaphyseal and cortical bone *** the metaphysis,Gsα^(R201C) caused an early phase of bone resorption followed by bone *** bone formation was sustained by cells that were traced by Adq-Cre and eventually resulted in a high trabecular bone mass *** the diaphysis,Gsα^(R201C),in combination with estrogen,triggered the osteogenic activity of Adq-Cre-targeted perivascular bone marrow stromal cells leading to intramedullary bone ***,consistent with the previously unnoticed presence of Adq-Cre-marked pericytes in intraosseous blood vessels,Gsα^(R201C) caused the development of a lytic phenotype that affected both cortical(increased porosity)and trabecular(tunneling resorption)*** results provide the first evidence that the Adq-cell network in the skeleton not only regulates bone resorption but also contributes to bone formation,and that the Gsα/cAMP pathway is a major modulator of both functions.

An assessment of the potential impact of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 in Aotearoa New Zealand

Helicobacter pylori eradication: Sequential therapy and Lactobacillus reuteri supplementation

AIM:To evaluate the role of sequential therapy and Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri ) supplementation, in the eradication treatment of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori ). METHODS:H. pylori infection was diagnosed in 90 adult dyspeptic patients. Patients were excluded if previously treated for H. pylori infection or if they were taking a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), H2-receptor antagonist or antibiotics. Patients were assigned to receive one of the following therapies:(1) 7-d triple therapy (PPI plus clarithromycin and amoxicillin or metronidazole) plus L. reuteri supplementation dur- ing antibiotic treatment; (2) 7-d triple therapy plus L. reuteri supplementation after antibiotic treatment; (3) sequential regimen (5-d PPI plus amoxicillin therapy followed by a 5-d PPI, clarithromycin and tinidazole) plus L. reuteri supplementation during antibiotic treatment; and (4) sequential regimen plus L. reuteri supplementation after antibiotic treatment. Successful eradication therapy was defined as a negative urea breath test at least 4 wk following treatment. RESULTS:Ninety adult dyspeptic patients were en- rolled, and 83 (30 male, 53 female; mean age 57 ± 13 years) completed the study. Nineteen patients were administered a 7-d triple treatment:11 with L. reuteri supplementation during and 8 after therapy. Sixty-four patients were administered a sequential regimen:32 with L. reuteri supplementation during and 32 after therapy. The eradication rate was significantly higher in the sequential group compared with the 7-d triple regimen (88% vs 63%, P = 0.01). No difference was found between two types of PPI. No difference in erad- ication rates was observed between patients submitted to L. reuteri supplementation during or after antibiotic treatment. Compliance with therapy was excellent in all patients. Transoral incisionless fundoplication for gastro-esophageal reflux disease: Techniques and outcomes

We present the properties and potentialities of light emitting devices based on amorphous Si nanoclusters. Amorphousnanostructures may constitute an interesting alternative to Si nanocrystals for the monolithic integration of optical andelectrical functions in Si technology. In fact, they exhibit an intense room temperature electroluminescence (EL). The ELproperties of these devices have been studied as a function of current and of temperature. Moreover, to improve theextraction efficiency of the light, we have integrated the emitting system with a 2D photonic crystal structure opportunelyfabricated by using conventional optical lithography to reduce the total internal reflection of the emitted light. The extractionefficiency in such devices increases by a factor of 4 at a resonance wavelength.

1. Introduction The tegmental wall of the tympanic cavity is a thin plate of the temporal bone that separates the middle cranial fossa(MCF) from the ear. This anatomical region consists of two areas: an anterior one, comprised of the tegmen tympani(To′th et al., 2007), and a posterior one, formed by the tegmen antri and the tegmen mastoideum(Makki et al., 2011). In some patients, the tegmental region of the temporal bone can be interrupted, causing a tegmen defect(TD). A TD is sometimes associated with a meningoencephalic herniation(MEH), in which brain tissue herniates through a TD.
