Thermal and salinity effects on locomotor performance of Thoropa taophora tadpoles(Anura,Cycloramphidae)

It is well known that environmental temperature influences several biological functions of ectotherms,notably in *** high permeability of anuran skin,associated with the effect of elevated environmental temperature,potentiates the dehydration process and this combination may restrict locomotor ***pa taophora is an endemic species from the Atlantic Rainforest whose tadpoles are semiterrestrial and predominantly diurnal,and are found in rocky seashores where they are exposed to sea spray and high *** this study we investigated how temperature and salinity conditions affect the locomotor performance in Thoropa taophora *** also assessed how different osmotic concentrations affect the activity of the metabolic pathways that support muscle *** measured the sprint speed of tadpoles of various sizes at different temperatures and salinities in the *** also measured the activity of the enzymes pyruvate kinase(PK),lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)and citrate synthase(CS)in different temperatures and osmotic concentrations,and calculated the thermal sensitivity and the activity constants for each *** results showed that,in general,sprint speed decreased with increasing temperature and ***,whereas the effect of increased salinity was similar in smaller and larger tadpoles,increased temperature had a higher negative impact on sprint speed of larger tadpoles,thus indicating low thermal sensitivity of small *** and LDH thermal sensitivities and LDH constant of activity decreased as the osmolality *** conclusion,the locomotor capacity of tadpoles was decreased by temperature and salinity,which may be related to a decrease in anaerobic metabolism both in terms of sensitivity and total energy turnover through enzymatic *** discuss the ecological consequences,including the potential impacts on predator escape behavior promoted by changes in metabolism and locomotor performance

XBAT35, a Novel Arabidopsis RING E3 Ligase Exhibiting Dual Targeting of Its Splice Isoforms, Is Involved in Ethylene-Mediated Regulation of Apical Hook Curvature

The Arabidopsis XBAT35 is one of five structurally related ankyrin repeat-containing Really Interesting New Gene （RING） E3 ligases involved in ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation, which plays key roles in a wide range of cel- lular processes. Here, we show that the XBAT35 gene undergoes alternative splicing, generating two transcripts that are constitutively expressed in all plant tissues. The two splice variants derive from an exon skipping event that excludes an in-frame segment from the XBAT35 precursor mRNA, giving rise to two protein isoforms that differ solely in the presence of a nuclear localization signal （NLS）. Transient expression assays indicate that the isoform lacking the NLS localizes in the cytoplasm of plant cells, whereas the other is targeted to the nucleus, accumulating in nuclear speckles. Both isoforms are functional E3 ligases, as assessed by in vitro ubiquitination assays. Two insertion mutant alleles and RNA-interference （RNAi） silencing lines for XBAT35 display no evident phenotypes under normal growth conditions, but exhibit hyper- sensitivity to the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylate （ACC） during apical hook exaggeration in the dark, which is rescued by an inhibitor of ethylene perception. Independent expression of each XBAT35 splice variant in the mutant background indicates that the two isoforms may differentially contribute to apical hook formation but are both functional in this ethylene-mediated response. Thus, XBAT35 defines a novel player in ethylene signaling involved in negatively regulating apical hook curvature, with alternative splicing controlling dual targeting of this E3 ubiquitin ligase to the nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments.

Coffee protection against the development of hepatocellular carcinoma: review article

Coffee, a popular drink around the world, is composed of a complex mix of biologically active molecules, including caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and diterpenes. These compounds have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, and anticarcinogenic properties, which may explain observational data showing that coffee drinkers have lower rates of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Recent studies have also shown that coffee consumption may also increase patient survival before and after liver transplantation. The mechanism by which coffee consumption protects against HCC is not clear;however, its relevant role has been demonstrated. This literature review article focuses on the role of coffee consumption in protecting against the development of HCC. Methodology: Scientific articles indexed through PubMed, including Medline, Scielo, and Lilacs, published in English were used as search methods. The terms used in English were: "hepatocellular carcinoma" or "Liver cancer" or "HCC" and "coffee". According to the study design or review article, cross-sectional, longitudinal, or descriptive investigations were included, showing site and year of publication until 2019.

Glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency and its correlation with other risk factors in jaundiced newborns in Southern Brazil

Objective:To evaluate the correlation between glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase(G6PD) deficiency and neonatal ***:Prospective,observational case-control study was conducted on 490 newborns admitted to Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre for phototherapy, who all experienced 35 or more weeks of gestation,from March to December *** screening of G6PD activity was performed,followed by ***:There was prevalence of 4.6% and a boy-girl ratio of 3:1 in jaundiced *** jaundiced neonate with ABO incompatibility presented G6PD deficiency,and no Mediterranean mutation was found.A higher proportion of deficiency was observed in *** was no association with UGT1A1 variants. Conclusions:G6PD deficiency is not related to severe hyperbilirubinemia and considering the high miscegenation in this area of Brazil,other gene interactions should be investigated.

Stability of highly supersaturated vanadium electrolyte solution and characterization of precipitated phases for vanadium redox flow battery

The vanadium redox flow battery(VRFB)has been receiving great attention in recent years as one of the most viable energy storage technologies for large-scale ***,higher concentrations of vanadium species are required in the H_(2)O-H_(2)SO_(4) electrolyte in order to improve the VRFB energy *** might lead to unwanted precipitation of vanadium compounds,whose nature has not been accurately characterized *** this purpose,this study reports the preparation ofⅤ^((Ⅱ)),ⅤV^((Ⅲ)),Ⅴ^((Ⅳ))andⅤ^((Ⅴ))supersaturated solutions in a 5 M H_(2)SO_(4)-H_(2)O electrolyte by an electrolytic method,from the only vanadium sulfate compound commercially available(VOSO_(4)).The precipitates obtained by ageing of the stirred solutions are representative of the solids that may form in a VRFB operated with such supersaturated *** solid phases are identified using thermogravimetric analysis,X-ray diffraction and *** report that dissolvedⅤ^((Ⅱ)),Ⅴ^((Ⅲ))andⅤ^((Ⅳ))species precipitate as crystals of VSO_(4),V_(2)(SO_(4))3 and VOSO_(4) hydrates and not in their anhydrous form;conversely V^((Ⅴ))precipitates as an amorphous V_(2) O_(5) oxide partially *** measured hydration degrees(respectively 1.5,9,3 and 0.26 mol of H_(2)O per mol of compound)might significantly affect the overall engineering of VRFB operating with high vanadium concentrations.

Solid-state cooling based on caloric effects is considered a viable alternative to replace the conventional vapor-compression refrigeration *** barocaloric materials,recent results show that elastomers are promising candidates for cooling applications around *** the present paper,we report supergiant barocaloric effects observed in acetoxy silicone rubber—a very popular,low-cost and environmentally friendly *** values of adiabatic temperature change and reversible isothermal entropy change were obtained upon moderate applied pressures and relatively low *** huge barocaloric changes are associated both to the polymer chain rearrangements induced by confined compression and to the first-order structural *** results are comparable to the best barocaloric materials reported so far,opening encouraging prospects for the application of elastomers in near future solid-state cooling devices.

Renal function after laparoscopic cholecystectomy and analgesia with tramadol and dipyrone or ketorolac

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) reduces surgical trauma and hospital stay, but requires effective and safe postoperative analgesia. This prospective and double-blind study investigated the effects of analgesia with tramadol combined with either dipyrone or ketorolac on the postoperative renal function of patients submitted to LC. Methods: Pre-and post-operatively (PO), estimated glomerular filtration rates (GFR), obtained by two formulas dependent on blood Cr and one on blood cystatin C values, and tubular enzymuria—alkaline phosphatase (AP), γ-glutamiltransferase (γ-GT)— were determined in well hydrated patients who underwent LC and analgesia with tramadol combined with either dipyrone (Dipyrone, n = 63) or ketorolac (Ketorolac, n = 63). Upon discharge from the post-anesthetic care unit (PACU), pain (through Verbal Numerical Scale—VNS) and need for rescue analgesia with morphine were evaluated. Results: There was hemodilution PO, which made GFR profile analysis more difficult—those dependent on Cr increased and statistically correlated, but those dependent on cystatin C did not change. There was a significant PO increase in AP in the Dipyrone and Ketorolac groups, and in the product of the both enzymes in the Ketorolac group. Upon PACU discharge, the Dipyrone group showed signifi cantly higher VNS scores than the Ketorolac group. All patients received morphine PO, and the total dose needed for pain control differed between groups, but without statistical significance. Conclusions: The association of tramadol with dipyrone or ketorolac in well hydrated patients submitted to LC had similar analgesic effectiveness in the PACU. Postoperatively, the effect on GFR may have been masked by hemodilution, and enzymuria was discreetly enhanced when ketorolac was used.

Applying constant precipitation intensity,which does not occur in natural events,is one of the main limitations concerning rainfall simulators in soil erosion *** present work evaluated the InfiAsper rainfall simulator operating with a new control panel to program rainfalls with different precipitation intensities(PI).Infiltration rates and soil and water losses were evaluated in a Distrophic Acrisol(clay loam texture)with simulated rainfalls of 30 mm and duration of 40 min,considering advanced(AD),intermediate(IN),delayed(DE),and inverted intermediate(II)patterns,all with PI peaks of 110 mm h^(-1),and a constant(CT)*** experimental design was in randomized blocks with five treatments(rainfall patterns)and experimental units measuring 2.5×2.5 *** simulator worked satisfactorily,applying the rainfall according to the preconfigured *** simulated rainfall with the CT and II patterns did not promote runoff nor soil *** and runoff rates varied according to the applied rainfall pattern,reaching 97.8 and 27.3 mm h^(-1)(AD),82.1 and 39.5 mm h^(-1)(IN),and 76.2 and 49.7 mm h^(-1)(DE),*** loss and surface runoff totaled each 4.77 g m^(-2)and 3.9 mm(AD),6.70 g m^(-2)and 6.8 mm(IN),and 6.03 g m^(-2)and 7.0 mm(DE).The InfiAsper simulator modified enables varying precipitation intensity besides obtaining satisfactory results in the field and information consistent with the expected characteristics of natural rainfall *** the intermediate and delayed rainfall patterns,soil and water losses are higher than in the advanced.
