Marine sediments collected from Onne Port, Rivers State Nigeria were manually polluted with tributyltin chloride (TBTCl) to evaluate the abilities of bacterial isolates to degrade the pollutant. Bacterial isolates were screened with at varying concentrations of 3 mM, 5 mM, 7 mM, and 10 mM. Bacterial strains with outstanding capabilities of utilizing TBTCl were biochemically and molecularly characterized. The total bacterial counts varied from 42 × 102 to 64.4 × 102 cfu/g when plated on MSA only and the viable counts on MSA to 3 mM TBTCl and MSA + 5 mM TBTCl ranged from 22 × 101 to 38.5 × 102 cfu/g and 18 × 101 from 21.9 × 101 cfu/g respectively;however, the total viable count in MSA + 10 mM TBTCl ranged from 1.1 × 101 - 3.8 × 101 cfu/g. Statistically, total bacterial count varied significantly across the sample sites p tant that isolates that can tolerate organotin to a large extent can be used in the cleanup of organotin-contaminated site. Pseudomonas aeuroginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens are candidates for the bioremediation of the contaminated site.

This study investigated the effect of fixed height standing-workstation on different people with diverse anthropometry dimensions. Measurements of some anthropometric and physiological parameters are carried out as bases for the calculation of body mass index (BMI) and the determination of the maximum heart rate (HRmax) and aerobic power (VO2max) of individual subject while performing manual cutting operation with hacksaw on fixed vice height of 940 mm. Twenty subjects (S1 to S20) parted 2 mm thick square-pipe of 25 mm × 25 mm. Each subject carried out cutting operation in 5 replicates and their physiological parameters during activities are measured to determine their expended energy (EE) and oxygen consumption rate (VO2). The results showed that subject S4 with BMI of 20.76 kg/m2 has maximum cutting rate of 5.33 stroke/s, while subject S8 with BMI of 23.39 kg/m2 has minimum cutting rate of 0.92 stroke/s. There was a statistically significant effect on the interaction between BMI, EE and Cutting rate, with F = 827.54, P = 0.000, R2 = 0.967 and S = 1.749 units. Subject S11 was discovered to have VO2 (28.54 l/min) and VO2max (24.36 ml/min/kg), with highest value of EE (2.94 kcal/min). Wear rates of 1.86 teeth/s and 9.55 teeth/s have the same energy cost (EE = 0.87 kcal/min) but different cutting time of 36.65 s (S18) and 10.89 s (S20) respectively. This could explain in-part that excess 25.76 s utilized in operation time by subject S18 is responsible for keeping approximately 7.7 teeth intact as regards tool management. EE and Tool Wear Rate in one-way analysis of variance, were statistically significant (F = 45.87, P = 0.000, R2 = 54.69% and S = 1.617 units) at 0.05 level.

Influence of Climatic Parameters on Soybean Subjected to Low Nitrogen Application Rates in Southern Guinea Savanna of Oyo State, Nigeria

The variability in weather patterns consequent upon climate change constitutes a critical factor influencing soil N availability and the performance of crops. This paper aimed at evaluating the effects of climatic factors on soybean subjected to low N rates under rain-fed situation in the southern Guinea agro-ecology of Oyo State, Nigeria. A 2-year field experiment involving two soybean varieties (TGx1485-1D and TGx1448-2E) and five low rates of N fertilizer application (0, 5, 15, 25, 35 kg/ha) using Urea applied by banding 7 days after planting was arranged in a 5 × 2 split-plot with three replications. N rates constitute the main plot while variety constitutes the sub-plot. Parameters measured include dry shoot weight, shoot N accumulation, and grain yield. Data were subjected to GENSTAT statistical package for analysis, and means separated with Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of probability. Climatic parameters of rainfall, temperature, and potential evapotranspiration data were collected from the surface observatory of the National meteorological agency (NIMET) and subjected to Excel package for computation and graphics. The dry shoot weight increases as N rate increases up to 25 kg/ha, but declines at 35 kg/ha application rate, however, TGx1448-2E produced a higher dry shoot weight (2.9 t/ha) than TGx1485-1D (2.8 t/ha). Low N rates had no significant effects on shoot N accumulation and there was no significant difference in varietal response. Low N rate did not affect grain yield, but the TGx1448-2E had a greater yield of 1.5 t/ha than TGx1485-1D (1.30 t/ha). Annual rainfall amounts were 935.5 mm and1475.8 mm in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Potential evapotranspiration (PET) values were 1676.5 mm and 1676.8 mm in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Mechanotransduction refers to a physiological process by which mechanical forces, such as pressures exerted by ionized fluids on cell membranes and tissues, can trigger excitations of electrical natures that play important role in the control of various sensory (i.e. stimuli-responsive) organs and homeostasis of living organisms. In this work, the influence of mechanotransduction processes on the generic mechanism of the action potential is investigated analytically, by considering a mathematical model that consists of two coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. One of these two equations is the Korteweg-de Vries equation governing the spatio-temporal evolution of the density difference between intracellular and extracellular fluids across the nerve membrane, and the other is Hodgkin-Huxley cable equation for the transmembrane voltage with a self-regulatory (i.e. diode-type) membrane capacitance. The self-regulatory feature here refers to the assumption that membrane capacitance varies with the difference in density of ion-carrying intracellular and extracellular fluids, thus ensuring an electromechanical feedback mechanism and consequently an effective coupling of the two nonlinear equations. The exact one-soliton solution to the density-difference equation is obtained in terms of a pulse excitation. With the help of this exact pulse solution the Hodgkin-Huxley cable equation is shown to transform, in steady state, to a linear eigenvalue problem some bound states of which can be obtained exactly. Few of such bound-state solutions are found analytically.

The feasibility of nutrient uptake by Chlorella vulgaris using a cheap carbon source such as plantain peel extract was studied and its biomass utilized for bioethanol production. Unripe plantain peels were obtained, processed, infused for 48 hrs, extracted and cultivated with the Chlorella species for a period of fourteen days. The microalgal carbohydrate content was hydrolyzed with acid and enzyme while the hydrolysate fermented with 10% concentration of Saccharomyces sp. and Aspergillus sp. at 30°C and pH 4.5 using Separate Hydrolysis and Fermentation (SHF) and Separate Hydrolysis and Co-culture Fermentation (SHCF) methods. Results show that maximum cell growth of 1.56 (OD) and biomass concentration of 19 g/l were obtained with 48 hrs infusion. The result indicated that C. vulgaris utilized PPE medium as a sole carbon substrate and stimulated the secretion of biomass. The highest reducing sugar of 0.63 mg/ml was obtained after hydrolysis of the biomass, while the ethanol production yield of 0.33 g/l was obtained after fermentation. The ethanol production yield increased with the increase in fermentation time, while the reducing sugar was reduced after five days of fermentation. The highest ethanol percentage of 10.82% v/v was obtained from the distillate. This study showed that plantain peel can be utilized by C. vulgaris which provides a feasible route of reducing production cost of bioethanol from a cheap carbon substrate for biomass and bioenergy production.

Surface water sources in the oil producing Niger Delta region of Nigeria are highly susceptible to pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons and so it is important to understand the microbial diversity of such ecosystems. Water and sediment samples were collected between April-August, 2013 from Bodo creeks and taken to Environmental Microbiology laboratory of University of Portharcourt for analysis. A total of thirty aerobic heterotrophic bacterial strains isolated ranged from 3.0 - 7.0 × 104 cfu for surface water and 1.6 - 5.6 × 104 cfu for sediment samples of Bodo creek using serial dilution and spread plate technique. Pure cultures of bacteria were obtained on the basis of their morphological characteristics and subjected to biochemical tests and further classified on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The DNA was isolated from size fractionated samples and the diversity of bacteria in each fraction was studied using PCR amplification of partial 16S rRNA. The sequences were submitted to NCBIGen bank for identification and assigning of accession numbers. The isolated aerobic heterotrophic bacteria belong to the families of Enterobacteriaceae, Bacilliceae, Alcaligenaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Flavobactericeae and Planococcaceae.

Purpose: Since Chryseobacterium indologenes (C. indologenes) is a rare human pathogen, its clinical significance has not yet been fully established. C. indologenes contamination of medical devices involving fluids and of surgical implants has led to an increasing number of serious infectious reported in recent years, mainly in patients in extremes ages and an immunocompromised state. In this study, we describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics of seven adult patients with C. indologenes bacteremia treated in a tertiary medical center in Israel over a six-year period. Methods: Adult patients hospitalized in Rabin Medical Center, Israel, with a blood culture positive for C. indologenes during the period 2009-2014 were identified retrospectively and their medical records were reviewed. Results: Seven episodes of C. indologenes bacteremia in seven patients were identified during the study period. Five patients were females;the mean age was 76.8 years (41 - 92). Serious underlying conditions were present in all patients. All patients but one, presented after a recent invasive healthcare related intervention. Two patients required mechanical ventilation. Two patients died. All but one isolates were susceptible to ciprofloxacin. Conclusions: Despite our limited number of cases, to the best of our knowledge, our study serves as the largest cohort of adult patients with C. indologenes bacteremia reported in recent years.
