A systematic review of soil erosion control practices on the agricultural land in Asia

Soil is the basis of production in agriculture activities. The combination of intensive farming activities, improper farming practices, rainfall regimes, and topography conditions that taken place in agricultural land lead to the soil erosion problem. Soil erosion is the major constraint to agriculture that affects the yield production and degraded environmental sustainability. Furthermore, soil erosion that occurs in the agricultural area has jeopardized the sustainability of agriculture activities. Asia is one of the major agricultural producers in the world. It is essential to know how to mitigate soil erosion in Asian agri-cultural land. This systematic review aims to analyze the existing literature on research that has been done on control practices that had been taken in Asia agricultural land towards soil erosion. This article is guided by the PRISMA Statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis) review method. The authors systematically reviewed the literature to study the control practices that been taken and tested to control soil erosion on the agricultural land in Asia. Accordingly, this systematic review identified 39 related studies about the topic based on the Web of Science and Scopus databases. This article divided the control practices into three main themes, which are agronomic practices, agro-stological practices, and mechanical practices. The three main themes then produced a total of 11 sub-themes. Further specific and sustained research is needed to tackle this severe environmental problem through a better method, such as this systematic review method. The systematic review helps farmers and policymakers to implement the most practical approach to control and reduce soil erosion.

Preventive treatment of alveolar pulmonary edema of cardiogenic origin

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of preventive treatment (PT) on alveolar pulmonary edema (APE) of cardiogenic origin using a monitor based on principles of internal thoracic impedance (ITI) *** We conducted blinded clinical trials on patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and monitored whether the condition would progress to APE. ITI was measured noninvasively by the Edema Guard Monitor (EGM, model RS-207) every 30 min. The measurement threshold for the diagnosis of APE was fixed at > 12% decrease in ITI from baseline as described in our methodology. The patients were divided into one group that received standard treatment after the appearance of clinical signs of APE without considering the prediction of APE by EGM devise (Group 1), and another group of asymptomatic patients in whom development of APE was predicted by using only EGM measurements (Group 2). The latter participants’PT consisted of furosemide, intravenous nitroglycerine and supplemental oxygen. Results One-hundred and fifty patients with acute STEMI were enrolled into this study. Group 1 included 100 patients (53% males, age 64.1 ±12.6 years). Treatment was started after the clinical appearance of overt signs of APE. Group 2 included 50 patients (54% males, age 65.2 ±11.9 years) who received PT based on EGMmeasurements. Group 2 had significantly fewer cases of APE (n = 4, 8%) than Group 1 (n = 100, 100%) (P > 0.001). While APE was lethal in six (6%) Group 1 patients, PT resulted in prompt resolution of APE in all four (8%) Group 2 patients. Conclusion ITI is a usefulmodality for early diagnosis and PT of pulmonary edema of cardiogenic origin.

Swiss pumped hydro storage potential for Germany’s electricity system under high penetration of intermittent renewable energy

In order to cut greenhouse-gas emissions and increase energy security,the European Commission stimulates the deployment of intermittent renewable energy sources(IRES) towards *** an electricity system with high shares of IRES implemented in the network,energy balancing like storage is needed to secure grid stability and smooth demand *** hydro storage(PHS) is at this moment the best option for large scale *** has strong ambitions to further develop their PHS sector and become the battery of *** this research,the potential of the Swiss PSH plants is explored,whilst taking inflow into the upper reservoirs of the PHS plants into *** simulate electricity imbalance,Germany is used as a case *** already has a high penetration of IRES and has plans to increase installed IRES *** using an energy planning model(Power Plan),three future scenarios of the German electricity system were designed,each with a different set of IRES installed(solar,mixed and wind).Results show that the Swiss battery ambition offers most benefits to a wind-oriented scenario,reducing both shortages as well as *** inflow in Swiss PHS-reservoirs is of minor importance when looking at security of supply,although it was shown that the solarscenario profits more from inflow in terms of system ***,a potential conflict was observed in the solar-scenario between the need for electricity storage and the storage of natural inflow,resulting in more surpluses in the system when inflow was taken into account.

Portal hypertension in polycystic liver disease patients does not affect wait-list or immediate post-liver transplantation outcomes

AIM To establish the impact of portal hypertension(PH) on wait-list/post-transplant outcomes in patients with polycystic liver disease(PCLD) listed for liver transplantation. METHODS A retrospective single-centre case controlled study of consecutive patients listed for liver transplantation over 12 years was performed from our centre. PH in the PCLD cohort was defined by the one or more of following parameters:(1) presence of radiological or endoscopic documented varices from our own centre or the referral centre;(2) splenomegaly(> 11 cm) on radiology inabsence of splenic cysts accounting for increased imaging size;(3) thrombocytopenia(platelets < 150 × 109/L); or(4) ascites without radiological evidence of hepatic venous outflow obstruction from a single cyst. RESULTS Forty-seven PCLD patients(F: M = 42: 5) were listed for liver transplantation(LT)(single organ, n = 35; combined liver-kidney transplantation, n = 12) with 19 patients(40.4%) having PH. When comparing the PH group with non-PH group, the mean listing age(PH group, 50.6(6.4); non-PH group, 47.1(7.4) years; P = 0.101), median listing MELD(PH group, 12; non-PH group, 11; P = 0.422) median listing UKELD score(PH group, 48; non-PH group, 46; P = 0.344) and need for renal replacement therapy(P = 0.317) were similar. In the patients who underwent LT alone, there was no difference in the duration of ICU stay(PH, 3 d; non-PH, 2 d; P = 0.188), hospital stay length(PH, 9 d; non-PH, 10 d; P = 0.973), or frequency of renal replacement therapy(PH, 2/8; non-PH, 1/14; P = 0.121) in the immediate post-transplantation period. CONCLUSION Clinically apparent portal hypertension in patients with PCLD listed for liver transplantation does not appear to have a major impact on wait-list or peri-transplant morbidity.

This study aimed to determine the association and predictive capacities of job satisfaction,workplace stress,work motivation,and self-esteem on state of mental health of caregivers of children with disabilities in South-West *** self-determination theory provided a theoretical framework for the study.A closed-ended paper-pencil questionnaire tagged‘Mental Healthiness Scale for Caregivers’was used for data collection from 241 care-givers of children with *** collected was analyzed using descriptive of frequency count,simple per-centage and mean as well as inferential statistics involving Pearson product moment correlation and Binary Logistic Regression at 95%confidence *** revealed a significant but inverse association between self-esteem,workplace stress and mental *** motivation had a direct association with mental health while job satisfaction had no significant association with mental health of caregivers of children with ***(18–40 years)had the highest odds for mental health *** self-esteem and workplace stress increased mental health concerns while job satisfaction significantly predicted a higher likelihood for posi-tive state of mental health among caregivers of children with disabilities.

Development of a Test Program for Assessing the SCC, Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Behaviour of Selected Corrosion Resistant Alloy Liner Materials for Clad Pipe for Offshore Applications

The development of an offshore gas field involves production of oil and gas from subsea wells. Design considerations for a particular subsea system have identified the maximum temperature for operations which is greater than 130 ~C. Consequently, for large diameter flowlines, this precludes the use of duplex stainless steels as CRA＇s （corrosion resistant alloys） for service under the expected operating conditions. Attention has therefore focused on alternative CRA＇s such as austenitic stainless steels and Ni based alloys as mechanically clad or lined clad pipe for carbon steel subsea gas flowlines. One design concern is the recognized temperature limit for CRA materials, such as 316L stainless steel and similar alloys in production fluids is taken to be 120 ~C. This then raises concerns surrounding their suitability for providing sufficient corrosion resistance/stress corrosion cracking resistance in gas environments containing COz and H2S at temperatures higher than 130 ~C. It was recommended that specific testing should be completed at temperatures greater than 133 ~C to establish that candidate materials are still corrosion resistant. The focus of this study was to develop, implement and assess a testing program that would predict the suitability of a series of CPA＇s alloys for use in mechanical clad/lined subsea gas flowlines, with respect to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. This paper will present the rationale adopted for this testing program to simulate the stringent operating conditions, the results from these findings and the overall assessment/integrity of the candidate alloys selected.

Proline and soluble sugars accumulation in three pepper species(Capsicum spp) in response to water stress imposed at different stages of growth

Drought is a major production constraint for major fruits and vegetable crops in the tropics. This study was conducted to in- vestigate the effect of limited water supply at three growth stages （vegetative, flowering and fruiting） on the accumulation of proline and soluble sugars in three pepper species. Seeds of the three pepper species, Capsicum chinense Jacq., C. annuum L. and C. frutescens L. were raised in a nursery and the seedlings were transplanted into seventy two plastic pots arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates, 25 days after planting. Four water treatments, 200 mL of water supplied twice daily （W1）, once in every three days （W2）, once in every five days （W3）, and zero water supplied throughout growing period （W0） were imposed at three vegetative, flowering, and fruiting growth stages. Data were collected on relative water content, free proline and total soluble sugar. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance and means were separated using Duncan＇s multiple range test. Results show that the concentration ofproline and soluble sugar in leaves of the three pepper species were found to be remarkable at the different stages of growth in the stressed plants.

Automatic Generation of Water Masks from RapidEye Images

Water is a very important natural resource and it supports all life forms on earth. It is used by humans in various ways including drinking, agriculture and for scientific research. The aim of this research was to develop a routine to automatically extract water masks from RapidEye images, which could be used for further investigation such as water quality monitoring and change detection. A Python-based algorithm was therefore developed for this particular purpose. The developed routine combines three spectral indices namely Simple Ratios (SRs), Normalized Green Index (NGI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). The two SRs are calculated between the NIR and green band, and between the NIR and red band. The NGI is calculated by rationing the green band to the sum of all bands in each image. The NDWI is calculated by differencing the green to the NIR and dividing by the sum of the green and NIR bands. The routine generates five intermediate water masks, which are spatially intersected to create a single intermediate water mask. In order to remove very small waterbodies and any remaining gaps in the intermediate water mask, morphological opening and closing were performed to generate the final water mask. This proposed algorithm was used to extract water masks from some RapidEye images. It yielded an Overall Accuracy of 95% and a mean Kappa Statistic of 0.889 using the confusion matrix approach.
