AIM: to investigate the change in eukaryotic gene expression profile in Caco-2 cells after infection with strains of Escherichia coli and commensal probiotic bacteria. MEtHODS: A 19 200 gene/expressed sequence tag gene chip was used to examine expression of genes after infection of Caco-2 cells with strains of normal flora E. coli,Lactobacillus plantarum,and a combination of the two. RESULtS: the cDNA microarray revealed up-regulation of 155 and down-regulation of 177 genes by E. coli . L. plantarum up-regulated 45 and down-regulated 36 genes. During mixed infection,27 genes were up-regulated and 59 were down-regulated,with nullification of stimulatory/inhibitory effects on most of the genes. Expression of several new genes was noted in this group. CONCLUSION: the commensal bacterial strains used in this study induced the expression of a large number of genes in colonocyte-like cultured cells and changed the expression of several genes involved in important cellular processes such as regulation of transcription,protein biosynthesis,metabolism,cell adhesion,ubiquitination,and apoptosis. Such changes induced by the presence of probiotic bacteria may shape the physiologic and pathologic responses they trigger in the host.

In this paper we extend the results obtained in [3], where are investigated the general settings of the two-dimensional complex Finsler manifolds, with respect to a local complex Berwahl frame. the geometry of such manifolds is controlled by three real invari- ants which live on t＇M： two horizontal curvature invariants K and W and one vertical curvature invariant I. By means of these invariants are defined both the horizontal and the vertical holomorphic sectional curvatures. the complex Landsberg and Berwald spaces are of particular into, rest. Complex Berwald spaces coincide with K/ihler spaces, in the two - dimensional case, We establish the necessary and sufficient condition under which K is a constant and we obtain a characterization for the Kghler purely Hermitian spaces by the fact K = W=constant and I = 0. For the class of complex Berwald spaces we have K =W = 0. Finally, a classitication of two-dimensional complex Finsler spaces for which the horizontal curvature satisfies a special property is obtained.

Histiocytes have a pivotal role in wound repair and intestinal epithelial recovery-the most important goal to sustain gut ***,an in vivo description of colonic histiocytes by confocal laser endomicroscopy(CLE) is ***,we report the case of a 45-yearsold male patient who was referred to our clinic with weight loss and a history of two consecutive Clostridium difficile colitis episodes,the latter cured 3 wk before present *** microbiology was *** colonoscopy showed atrophy and a light mucosal oedema in the distal *** on-going endoscopy,we performed a fluorescein-aided CLE which revealed large polygonal(histiocytes-like) cells with copious cytoplasm and large nuclei in the lamina propria of the sigmoid colon as well as regenerative epithelial *** assessment of biopsies from the same areas confirmed the endomicroscopical findings:Periodic acid-Schiff-and CD68-positive foamy histiocytes in the colonic lamina propria and an advanced epithelial *** stool microbiology was repeatedly negative and polymerase chain reaction-analysis from colonic biopsies could not detect any mRNA for thropheryma whippleii and common pathogens,we interpreted this particular setting as a mucosal healing process after consecutive Clostridium difficile *** conclusion,by describing these colonic histiocytes,we highlight the clinical usefulness of CLE in describing the entity of histiocytes in vivo and in real-time during the process of post-infectious mucosal healing in the colon.

Background and Aims: Several studies have shown that hypoglycaemia, especially a severe episode is associated with an increased mortality rate in diabetes mellitus subjects with previous cardiovascular disease or acute coronary syndrome. One of the presumed mechanisms is the proarrhythmic effect of hypoglycaemia related to the prolongation of the action potential, or the catecholamine surge that follows an episode. the aim of this case series analysis was to investigate the relationship between hypoglycaemia and glucose variability with arrhythmic events in type 2 diabetes patients who suffered an acute myocardial infarction. Materials and Methods: We selected patients admitted consecutively to the cardiology department of Clinical Emergency Hospital in Bucharest for a period of three months with acute myocardial infarction and previously diagnosed type 2 diabetes. For each patient, a retrospective continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) or glucose sensor (Medtronic® Enlite, USA) and a dual electrocardiograph and blood pressure monitor for 24 hours were available. Also, patients had an oscillometric device (Arteriograph® tensioMed Ltd) for 24 hours or non-invasive monitoring of central blood pressure, pulse wave velocity and augmentation index. the data were analysed using Medtech®, tensioWin® and Carelink iPro® softwares. We used SPSS® version 20.0 (IBM) for the statistical analysis. the results are presented as median and interquartile range (IQR). Results and Discussion: ten type 2 diabetes patients (4 males, 6 females) with anterior (4/10) and inferior acute myocardial infarction (6/10) were included. they were treated with insulin (3/10), sulphonylurea (Gliclazide) plus Metformin (4/10), Metformin monotherapy (2/10), or all three (1/10). the patients had a median age of 67.5 (3.25) years with a median disease duration of 8 (7.75) years. the median body mass index was 2

BACKGROUND Despite significant technical and training improvements, the incidence of postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) pancreatitis(PEP) has not significantly dropped. Although many studies have evaluated the efficacy of various agents, e.g. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, octreotide,antioxidants, administered via various dosages, routes(oral, intrarectal or parenteral), and schedules(before or after the procedure), the results have been *** to evaluate efficacy of three pharmacologic prophylactic methods for prevention of *** In this prospective, single-center randomized trial, patients who underwent firsttime ERCP for choledocholithiasis were randomly assigned to three groups. the first group received 600 mg N-acetylcysteine 15 min prior to ERCP, and perrectum administration of 50 mg indomethacin both prior to and after completion of the ERCP. the second group was administered only the 50 mg indomethacin per-rectum both prior to and after the ERCP. the third group was administeredper-rectum 100 mg indomethacin only after the ERCP, representing the control group given the guideline-recommended regimen. the primary end-point was PEP *** Among the total 211 patients evaluated during the study, 186 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and completed the protocol. the percentages of patients who developed PEP in each of the three groups were not significantly different(χ2 =2.793, P = 0.247). Among the acute PEP cases, for all groups, 14 patients developed mild pancreatitis(77.77%) and 4 moderate. No severe cases of PEP occurred, and in all PEP cases the resolution was favorable. No adverse events related to the medications(digestive hemorrhage, rectal irritation, or allergies)*** the efficacies of split-dose indomethacin and combined administration(Nacetylcysteine with indomethacin) for preventing PEP were similar to that of the standard regimen.

the Kamchatka Peninsula – situated in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" – has 29 active and over 400 extinct volcanoes. Since it is situated in the northeastern extremity of Russia, in subarctic climate,the volcanic landforms are overprinted by the 446 glaciers. this research focuses on the 1^(st) Mutnaya catchment which drains the southern slopes of two active volcanoes: Avachinsky and Koryaksky. those volcanoes are a permanent threat for the cities of Petropavlovsk and Elizovo, which are the 2 of 3 cities of the peninsula. Hence, most of the studies carried out in the area dealt with the natural hazards and only few focus on landscape evolution. thus, the purpose of this study was to elaborate a cartographic approach which integrates classic geomorphology with state of the art GIS and remote sensing techniques. As result,different landforms and related processes have been analysed and included in the first general geomorphologic map of the 1^(st) Mutnaya catchment.
