Presence of Fleischer ring and prominent corneal nerves in keratoconus relatives and normal controls

AIMTo examine the occurrence of commonly known clinical signs of keratoconus (KC), i.e. Fleischer ring, prominent corneal nerves and thinning, among unaffected family members of KC patients and healthy control *** of both eyes of 117 relatives of KC patients having no manifest disease based on videokeratography indices (KC relatives), and 142 controls were used for Pearson correlation and t-test statistics. Correlation of Fleischer ring, prominent corneal nerves and central pachymetry data were tested with each other and with videokeratography indices (KSI, KISA, 3 and 6 mm Fourier asymmetry, and I-S).RESULTSA moderate correlation was found between Fleischer ring and all examined topographical indices. Most important correlation was present with 6 mm Fourier asymmetry, and corneal pachymetry (r=0.272, P<0.001; r=-0.234, P=0.027, respectively). Similar correlations were found with prominent corneal nerves (r=0.234, P<0.001 for 6 mm Fourier asymmetry and r=-0.235, P=0.0265 for pachymetry). KC family members who exhibited Fleischer ring or prominent nerves had thinner and more asymmetric corneas than those without Fleischer ring or prominent corneal nerves (P<0.05 for pachymetry and topographic indices with t-test and Mann-Whitney rank sum test). Though rarely, Fleischer ring and prominent corneal nerves occurred among normal controls, indicating the existence of forme fruste cases in the normal population. Control subjects, who had corneal Fleischer ring or prominent nerves had corneas more similar to KC than other controls (t-test: increased KSI and KISA, P=0.048 and 0.012, respectively).CONCLUSIONIn KC family members and healthy individuals, Fleischer ring and prominent corneal nerves are associated with features of KC and may suggest a possibility of forme fruste KC. Searching for the possible presence of Fleischer ring or prominent nerves on the cornea may help in the decision whether or not to diagnose subclinical KC in

The Medves Area lies close to the Hungarian-Slovak boundary in North Hungary. Having 'horst-graben-type' geological structure it can be characterised by steeply emerging horst-like hills and between them narrow trenches and deeply dissected erosional valleys. The recent morphology of the Medves Area is determined by four main elements: the structure, the petrographic setting, the exo-genic processes and the anthropogenic effects. In spite of the domination of the Oligocene-Miocene sedimentary rocks great part of the area is covered by Pliocene basalts having either stratovolcanic structure or consisting of only lavas, forming lavaplateaus, small cones, dykes or necks. In spite of the strong denudation their original form dominates yet. The decrease of the sheet of the Medves Plateau was considerable only on the rims by parallel retreat. In the southern part of the Medves Area the evolution of the landscape was determined mainly by exogenic processes. The great density of the valleys is very significant,

Aim of Study: Reviewing the large number of publications about DC in the case of severe traumatic brain swelling, there is no clear position on which one is preferable for the patient. Bifrontal or bilateral fronto-parieto-temporo-partial occipital craniectomy. One of the most critical points, the behaviour of brainstem and its vascular structures during the protrusion of the traumatized swelling brain, which can expand in different directions, depending on where the skull has been opened. Method: After the high ICP created on a simple fresh cadaver model, we examined the brainstem displacements and compressions with the help of an endoscope-guided transnasal transsphenoidal transclival and analyzed their possible harmful effects on brainstem structures and blood vessels. Results: In bilateral bifronto-parieto-temporo-partial occipital craniotomy, no significant bulging or forward movement of the brainstem was detected. In the course of bifrontal craniectomy, significant forward movement and thus compression of vascular structures and pons were detected. Conclusion: Our assumption has been confirmed. In bifrontal craniectomy, the expansion is not parallel to the course of the brainstem, but perpendicular so that the pons and the blood vessels running along its anterior surface are compressed by moving forward against the clivus, which leads to circulatory compression and damage to the brainstem. In bilateral DC, the expansion is axially parallel to the course of the brainstem. Based on the fresh cadaver model, the use of the latter method is preferable for the traumatized swelling brain. In both cases, bridging veins of the protruding brain at the bone edge must be protected by the vascular tunnel method against compression. We examined this scientific question not only from a neurosurgical perspective but also in terms of the general ethical possibilities and psychological difficulties of conducting fresh cadaver practices. Background： After their death, Scots pine trees can remain standing for decades and sometimes up to 200 years,forming long-lasting and ecologically important structures in boreal forest landscapes. Standing dead pines decay very slowly and with time develop into ‘kelo＇ trees, which are characterized by hard wood with silvery-colored appearance. These kelo trees represent an ecologically important, long lasting and visually striking element of the structure of natural pine-dominated forests in boreal Fennoscandia that is nowadays virtually absent from managed forest ***： We examined and mapped the amount, structural features, site characteristics and spatial distribution of dead standing pine trees over a ten hectare area in an unmanaged boreal forest landscape in the Kalevala National Park in Russian Viena ***： The mean basal area of dead standing pine trees in the forested part of the landscape was 1.7 m^2·ha^-1 and the estimated volume 12.7 m^3·ha^-1. From the total number of standing dead pine trees 65% were kelo trees, with a basal area of 1.1 m^2·ha^-1 and volume of 8.0 m^3·ha^-1, the remainder consisting of standing dead pines along the continuum between a recently dead tree and a kelo tree. Overall, standing dead pines were distributed throughout the study area, but there was a tendency towards spatial clustering up to 〈100 m distances. Standing dead pines were most commonly situated on flat ground or in the mid slope in the local *** addition, standing dead pines contributed to substrate diversity also by commonly having charred wood and broken tops. Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to show an efficient method for the detection of signs of early lung *** image processing algorithms are presented for different types of lesions,and a scheme is proposed for the combination of ***/methodology/approach-A computer aided detection(CAD)scheme was developed for detection of lung *** enables different lesion enhancer algorithms,sensitive to specific lesion subtypes,to be used *** image processing algorithms are presented for the detection of small nodules,large ones,and infiltrated *** outputs are merged,the false detection rate is reduced with four separated support vector machine(SVM)*** classifier input comes from a feature selection algorithm selecting from various textural and geometric features.A total of 761 images were used for testing,including the database of the Japanese Society of Radiological Technology(JSRT).Findings-The fusion of algorithms reduced false positives on average by 0.6 per image,while the sensitivity remained 80 per *** the JSRT database the system managed to find 60.2 per cent of lesions at an average of 2.0 false positives per *** effect of using different result evaluation criteria was tested and a difference as high as 4 percentage points in sensitivity was *** system was compared to other published ***/value-The study described in the paper proves the usefulness of lesion enhancement decomposition,while proposing a scheme for the fusion of ***,a new algorithm is introduced for the detection of infiltrated areas,possible signs of lung cancer,neglected by previous solutions.

Geopolymer cements provide an alternative to the Portland cement used to produce structural *** this study,geopolymer cements were used to create concrete having compressive strength in the range of 34 to 83 MPa(5,000-12,000 psi).The mechanical properties of these concrete materials were evaluated to determine the compressive and tensile strengths and immediate and long term elastic *** geopolymer cement concrete(GCC)was found to perform in a similar manner to Portland cement concrete(PCC).Long term shrinkage and creep properties of GCC materials were found to be lower than the values typical for PCC.
