Correlations between corneal and optic nerve head variables in healthy subjects and patients with primary open angle glaucoma

AIMTo correlate corneal variables (determined using the Pentacam) with optic nerve head (OnH) variables determined using the Heidelberg retina tomograph (HRT) in healthy subjects and patients diagnosed with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).METHODSMeasurements were made in 75 healthy eyes and 73 eyes with POAG and correlations examined through Pearson correlation coefficients between the two sets of variables in the two subject groups. The corneal variables determined were corneal volume (CVol), central corneal thickness (CCT), overall corneal thickness (OvCT), the mean thickness of a circular zone centered at the corneal apex of 1 mm radius (zone I) and the mean thickness of several concentric rings, also centered at the apex until the limbus, each of 1 mm width (zones II to VI respectively). The OnH variables were determined using the *** following pairs of variables were correlated in the control group: CCT-disc area (DAr) (-0.48; Pne I-DAr (-0.503; Pnd Zone II-DAr (-0.443; Pnd in the POAG group: CCT-cup-to-disc area ratio (CDRa) (-0.402; Pne I-CDRa (-0.418; Pne II-CDRa (-0.405; P=0.006), Zone I-cup shape measure (CSM) (-0.415; P=0.002), Zone II-CSM (-0.405; P=0.001), Zone iv-height variation contour (HVC) (0.378; P=0.002); Zone V-HVC (0.388, PnCLUSIOnSIn the healthy subjects, significant negative correlation was detected between central and paracentral corneal thickness and optic disc area. In contrast, the POAG patients showed significant negative correlation between central and paracentral corneal thickness and the cup-disc ratio and CSM, and positive correlation between peripheral corneal thickness and HVC.

The ingest of diets with high content of fats and carbohydrates, low or no physical exercise and a stressful routine are part of the everyday lifestyle of most people in the western world. These conditions are triggers for different diseases with complex interactions between the host genetics, the metabolism, the immune system and the microbiota, including inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD), obesity and diabetes. The incidence of these disorders is growing worldwide; therefore, new strategies for its study are needed. nowadays, the majority of researches are in use of murine models for understand the genetics, physiopathology and interaction between cells and signaling pathways to find therapeutic solutions to these diseases. The zebrafish, a little tropical water fish, shares 70% of our genes and conserves anatomic and physiological characteristics, as well as metabolical pathways, with mammals, and is rising as a new complementary model for the study of metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Its high fecundity, fast development, transparency, versatility and low cost of maintenance makes the zebrafish an interesting option for new researches. In this review, we offer a discussion of the existing genetic and induced zebrafish models of two important Western diseases that have a strong inflammatory component, the IBD and the obesity.

AIMTo analyze the diagnostic yield (DY), therapeutic impact (TI) and safety of capsule endoscopy (CE).METHODSThis is a multi-centre, observational, analytical, retrospective study. A total of 163 patients with suspicion of celiac disease (CD) (mean age = 46.4 ± 17.3 years, 68.1% women) who underwent CE from 2003 to 2015 were included. Patients were divided into four groups: seronegative CD with atrophy (Group-I, n = 19), seropositive CD without atrophy (Group-II, n = 39), contraindication to gastroscopy (Group-III, n = 6), seronegative CD without atrophy, but with a compatible context (Group-iv, n = 99). DY, TI and the safety of CE were *** overall DY was 54% and the final diagnosis was villous atrophy (n = 65, 39.9%), complicated CD (n = 12, 7.4%) and other enteropathies (n = 11, 6.8%; 8 Crohn’s). DY for groups I to iv was 73.7%, 69.2%, 50% and 44.4%, respectively. Atrophy was located in duodenum in 24 cases (36.9%), diffuse in 19 (29.2%), jejunal in 11 (16.9%), and patchy in 10 cases (15.4%). Factors associated with a greater DY were positive serology (68.3% vs 49.2%, P = 0.034) and older age (P = 0.008). On the other hand, neither sex nor clinical presentation, family background, positive histology or HLA status were associated with DY. CE results changed the therapeutic approach in 71.8% of the cases. Atrophy was associated with a greater TI (92.3% vs 45.3%, P nd 81.9% of the patients responded to diet. There was one case of capsule retention (0.6%). Agreement between CE findings and subsequent histology was 100% for diagnosing normal/other conditions, 70% for suspected CD and 50% for complicated *** has a high DY in cases of suspicion of CD and it leads to changes in the clinical course of the disease. CE is safe procedure with a high degree of concordance with histology and it helps in the differential diagnosis of CD.

AIM: To study the effect of dichloromethylene diphos-phonate (DMDP), a selective Kupffer cell toxicant in reference to liver damage and postnecrotic liver regeneration in rats induced by sublethal dose thioacetamide (TA). METHODS: Rats, intravenously (iv ) pre-treated with a single dose of DMDP (10 mg/kg), were intraperitoneally (ip ) injected with TA 6.6 mmol/kg (per 500 mg/kg body weight). Hepatocytes were isolated from rats at 0, 24, 48 and 72 h following TA intoxication and blood and liver samples were obtained. To evaluate the mecha-nisms involved in the postnecrotic regenerative state, DnA distribution and ploidy time course were assayed in isolated hepatocytes. Circulating cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TnF-α) was assayed in serum and determined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction in liver extract. RESULTS: The effect of DMDP induced noticeable changes in postnecrotic regeneration, causing an increased percentage of hepatocytes in the cell cycle S phase. The increase at 24 h in S1 population in rats pretreated with DMDP + TA was significantly (P nt compared with that of the TA group (18.07% vs 8.57%). Hepatocytes increased their proliferation as a result of these changes. Also, TnF-α expression and serum level were increased in rats pre-treated with DMDP. Thus, DMDP pre-treatment reduced TA-induced liver injury and accelerated postnecrotic liver regeneration. COnCLUSIOn: These results demonstrate that Kupffer cells are involved in TA-induced liver, as well as in post-necrotic proliferative liver states.
