Are acute exacerbations of chronic inflammatory appendicitis triggered by coprostasis and/or coproliths?

AIM: To examine the role of coprostasis and coproliths in recurrent appendicitis. METHODS: We evaluated four hundred and twenty seven consecutive pathology reports of all appende- ctomy specimens from January 2003 to December 2004. Findings were categorised as showing acute appen- dicitis, acute recurrent appendicitis, subacute recurrent appendicitis, chronic appendicitis, or appendices without inflammation. All patients had presented with acute right lower quadrant pain. In 94 instances, there was a history of recurrent similar episodes in the past. RESULTS: Of the 427 histology reports, 294 were inter- preted as showing acute appendicitis, 56 acute recurrent appendicitis, 34 subacute recurrent appen-dicitis, 28 chronic appendicitis, and 15 non-inflamed appendices. coprostasis was observed in 58 patients (13.58%) and the presence of coprolith in 6 (1.4%). coprostasis, and age, were among the predictors in the final model. cONcLUSION: coprostasis but not coproliths seems to be a contributing factor to acute exacerbations of chronic inflammatory appendicitis.

We consider the inverse electromagnetic scattering problem of determining the shape of a perfectly conducting core inside a penetrable chiral body. We prove the well-posedness of the corresponding direct scattering problem by the variational method. We focus on a uniqueness result for the inverse scattering problem that is under what conditions an obstacle can be identified by the knowledge of the electric far-field pattern corresponding to all time-harmonic incident planes waves with a fixed wave number. To this end, we establish a chiral mixed reciprocity relation that connects the electric far-field pattern of a spherical wave with the scattered field of a plane wave.

Two sets of experiments in the *** Falls Laboratory(SAFL)wave tank facility and atmospheric wind tunnel are integrated to provide a scaled representation of a floating wind turbine under heave and pitch motions due to ocean *** quasi-coupling is established by controlling the turbine rotor speed to generate a thrust force mimicking steady or fluctuating wind gusts in the wave tank,and by using two actuators to oscillate a miniature turbine in the wind *** pitch and heave motions under varying waves are scaled down using rotor geometry and the wake meandering frequency to study the effect of the floating platform kinematics on the evolution and characteristics of the oscillating turbine *** a limited case of experimental conditions results provide a phenomenological and quantitative description of the floating-turbine system under variable waves and simulated wind ***,we demonstrate that wind gusts contribute to increase the platform pitch range,and that periodic large scale flow patches of high and low momentum flow are generated by the oscillating rotor in the turbulent boundary layer and are coherently convected through the *** mechanisms could amplify the pitch response of downwind floating turbine units within the offshore power plant,in particular if the wave and/or wind forcing frequencies happen to approach the pitch natural frequency of the floating system.

Although hepatocellular carcinoma (Hcc) is as prevalent as ever as a cancerrelated mortality, and some would even argue that it is increasing, the pattern of its etiologies has been changing. Specifically, the domination of viral hepatitis c virus is being overcome, partly because of the emergence of the antiviral treatments, and partly because of the significant increase, especially in developed countries, of the combination of obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. This editorial will explore the interconnection of this group of diseases and how they are linked to Hcc. More importantly, it will argue that this shift in Hcc etiology essentially means that we have to change how we approach the treatment of Hcc, by changing our focus (and resources) to earlier stages of the disease development in order to prevent the appearance and progression of Hcc.

The electrolyte is an essential component of a battery system since it is responsible for the conduction of ions between the *** the quest for cheaper alternatives to common organic electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries(LIB),we formulated hybrid electrolytes comprising a mixture of Na,K,and Li alkaline salts with ethylene carbonate(Ec),ethyl methyl carbonate(EMc),and lithium hexafluorophosphate(LiPF_(6)),giving a total salt concentration of 1.5 M;we determined their physicochemical properties and investigated their electrochemical behavior on a nickel cobalt aluminum oxide(NcA)cathode and graphite(Gr)*** electrolytes demonstrated a melting transition peak(T_(m)).eutectic behavior,and ionic conductivities(-13 mS cm^(-1))close to those of a commercial LIB electrolyte(SE,Ec/EMc+1 M LiPF_(6))and activation energies of ca.3 kJ mol^(-1).The half-cell coin cells revealed high coulombic efficiency(99%),specific capacity(175 mAh g^(-1) at c/10),and capacity retention(92% for NacF_(3)SO_(3))for the NcA cathode and a moderate performance(coulombic efficiency of 98%for 20 cycles)on the graphite anode after the formation of the SEI *** hybrid electrolytes were cycled at 25℃ in a Gr//NcA cell yielding specific capacities of ca.225 mAh g^(-1) at a c/5 rate,corroborating that the anion plays a key role and highlighting their potential for energy storage applications.
