Light and electron microscopic study of the medial collateral ligament epiligament tissue in human knees

AIM To examine the normal morphology of the epiligament tissue of the knee medial collateral ligament(MCL) in humans. METHODS Several samples of the mid-substance of the MCL of the knee joint from 7 fresh human cadavers(3 females and 4 males) were taken. Examination of the epiligament tissue was conducted by light microscopy and photomicrography on semi-thin sections of formalin fixed paraffin-embedded blocks that were routinely stained with haematoxylin and eosin, Mallory stain and Van Gieson's stain. Electron microscopy of the epiligament tissue was performed on ultra-thin sections incubated in 1% osmium tetroxide and contrasted with 2.5% uranyl acetate, lead nitrate, and sodium *** The current light microscopic study demonstrated that the epiligament of the MCL consisted of fibroblasts, fibrocytes, adipocytes, neuro-vascular bundles and numerous multidirectional collagen fibers. In contrast, the ligament body was poorly vascularised, composed of hypo-cellular fascicles which were formed of longitudinal groups of collagen fibers. Moreover, most of the vessels of the epiligament-ligament complex were situated in the epiligament tissue. The electron microscopic study revealed fibroblasts with various shapes in the epiligament substance. All of them had the ultrastructural characteristics of active cells with large nuclei, well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, multiple ribosomes, poorly developed Golgi apparatus, elliptical mitochondria and oval lysosomes. The electron microscopy also confirmed the presence of adipocytes, mast cells, myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers and chaotically oriented collagen *** Significant differences exist between the normal structure of the ligament and the epiligament whose morphology and function is to be studied further.

We report results from computational modeling of the relative stability of germanosilicate SCM-15 structure due to different distribution of germanium heteroatoms in the double four-member rings(D4Rs)of the framework and the orientation of the structure directing agent(SDA)molecules in the as-synthesized *** calculated relative energies of the bare zeolite framework suggest that structures with germanium ions clustered in the same D4Rs,e.g.,with large number of Ge–O-Ge contacts,are the most *** simulations of various orientations of the SDA in the pores of the germanosilicate zeolite show different stability order-the most stable models are the structures with germanium spread among all ***,for SCM-15 the stabilization due to the presence of the SDA and their orientation,is thermodynamic factor directing both the formation of specific framework type and Ge distribution in the framework during the *** relative stability of bare structures with different germanium distribution is of minor *** differs from SCM-14 germanosilicate,reported earlier,for which the stability order is preserved in presence of ***,even for zeolites with the same chemical composition and SDA,the characteristics of their framework lead to different energetic preference for germanium distribution.

We studied the effect of titanium dioxide(TiO_(2))nanoparticles(Nps)on dielectric behavior of Naþion-conducting salt-complexed polymer nanocomposite system formed from a binary polymer blend of poly(ethylene oxide)(pEO)and polyvinyl pyrrolidone(pVp),with the addition of both sodium metaperiodate(NaIO_(4))at concentration 10 wt.%and TiO_(2) Nps of size10 nm,at concentrations 1,2,3,4 and 5 wt.%.Free standing nanocomposite pEO/pVp/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) films(150m)were characterized at room-temperature by analyzing their complex electrical impedance and dielectric spectra in the range 1 Hz–1 *** the concentration of 3 wt.%of TiO_(2) Nps,both ion conductivity and dielectric permittivity of the pEO/pVp/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) ion-conducting dielectrics reach an enhancement by more than one order of magnitude as compared to nanoadditive-free case.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris on the rice seedlings at physiological conditions and under cadmium(Cd)*** examined the effects of *** in the nutrient solution on rice seedlings grown hydroponically in the presence and the absence of 150μM CdCl2,using the low(77 K)temperature and pulse amplitude modulated(pAM)chlorophyll fluorescence,p700 photooxidation measurements,photochemical activities of both photosystems,kinetic parameters of oxygen evolution,oxidative stress markers(MDA,H_(2)O_(2) and proline),pigment content,growth parameters and Cd *** revealed that the application *** not only stimulates growth and improves the functions of photosynthetic apparatus under physiological conditions,but also reduces the toxic effect of Cd on rice ***,the presence of the green microalgae in the nutrient solution of the rice seedlings during Cd exposure,signifi-cantly improved the growth,photochemical activities of both photosystems,the kinetic parameters of the oxygen-evolving reactions,pigment content and decreased lipid peroxidation,H_(2)O_(2) and proline *** showed that the alleviation of Cd-induced effects in rice seedlings is a result of the Cd sorption by microalgae,as well as the reduced Cd accumulation in the roots and its translocation from the roots to the shoots.

A Simple and Dependable Technique for pancreatic-Enteric Anastomosis with a Soft pancreas and Nondilated Duct

Background:?pancreatic anastomotic leakаgе is one of the most serious complications following pancreaticoduodenectomy?(pD).?The most significant?riskfactors?for?pancreatic leakage are pancreatic texture,?main pancreatic duct (MpD)?size and anastomotic technique. Herewith we describe?our?technical modifications for?single-layer?pancreaticojejunostomy (pJ) with a soft pancreas and nondilated?MpD?for reconstruction?after?pD.?Methods: We report our early experience using this technique in 52 patients who underwent pD between May 2009?and?December?2012.?Results:?Overall postoperative mortality rate was1.92%.?postoperative morbidity rate was 32.69%, with?major complications occurring in?three?patients (5.77%).?pancreatic leak was?diagnosed?in sixpatients (11.54%). Three?patients with?pancreatic fistulae (pF)?of Grades A and B were?managed conservatively, whereas?three?other?patients with pF?of?Grade?C required relaparotomy.?Conclusions:?According to our early experience with this?modified technique for pJ,?usage of?horizontal mattress?sutures, “everting”?of MpD and incorporation of its wall into a?single layer pancreatic-enteric anastomosis?result in a low pancreatic anastomotic leakagerate?after?pD. This technique for pJ?with a soft pancreas and nondilated ductensures ideal?preconditions for anastomosis healing. They consist of?an excellent blood supply, an anatomical?position with tension-free approximation and unobstructed?pancreatic juice flow from the pancreas into the jejunal?loop.

The author of this article proposes that the representation of Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace’s theory on “variation and selection” in the living world is a reflection of the action of hierarchical thermodynamics. Hierarchical thermodynamics is based on the law of temporal hierarchies and on the principle of substance stability. This principle enables the transmission of thermodynamic information between lower and higher structural hierarchies, in both forward and reverse direction: from nucleic acids to higher structural hierarchies and back. The principle of substance stability, in fact, is the main dynamical and thermodynamic mechanism of natural selection. It is alleged that the natural selection of atoms, molecules, organisms, populations, and other hierarchical structures takes place under the action of a variety of internal factors within organisms and the external environmental factors that can be considered as tropisms. Forms (design) of living organisms are formed as a result of spontaneous and non-spontaneous processes that lead to the adaptation of living systems to the environment. The selection is carried out as a result of the impacts of different energy types and the principle of substance stability at all levels of hierarchical structures. Actions of tropisms are presented by various members of the generalized Gibbs equation.
