Toxic substances released.as a result of leaching from painted.surfaces to the aquatic environment affect both fouling organisms and.“non-target” biota. Artemia fransiscana nauplii have been consid.red.a useful test system for the examination of toxicity for antifouling paints. In this stud., we examined.the effect of four “tin free” self-polishing copolymer (SPC) antifouling paints on the larval d.velopment of Artemia nauplii. Based.on the L(S/V)50 values the ord.r of toxicity of the antifouling paints was: ANTI F > SHARKSKIN > OCEAN T/F > MICRON. Furthermore, the bod. size of Artemia nauplii was significantly affected.at lethal and.above lethal L(S/V)5024h values. The bod. size of 48 h-aged.nauplii exposed.for the last 24 hours to each of the four SPC antifouling paints was significantly lower than that of the 48 h-aged.controls (0.88 ± 0.030 mm). In ad.ition, the bod. size of 72 h-aged.nauplii maintained.for the last 24 hours to pure synthetic seawater after exposure for 24 hours to each of the four SPC antifouling paints was significantly lower than that of the 72 h-aged.controls (0.96 ±0.027 mm). Overall, the SPCs examined.here were substantially toxic to Artemia nauplii, but with d.fferent toxicities and.mod.s of action, as a result of the synergistic action of d.stinct components of the antifouling paints.

Semi-enclosed.sea basins have d.fficulty in recharging their waters d.e to limited.communication with larger water bod.es, with und.rstand.ble consequences for their environmental status. This paper aims at the computational simulation of the hyd.od.namic characteristics of the waters of the Pagasitikos Gulf (Greece), which has limited.communication and.water exchange with the Aegean Sea and.is subject to intense environmental pressures The Estuary, Lake & Coastal Ocean 3d.hyd.od.namic Mod.l (ELCOM 2.2) combined.with its later version Aquatic Ecosystem Mod.l-3d.(AEM3d. were used.for the simulation. The simulation includ.d.the topography of the area, the bay’s bottom geometry, atmospheric load.ngs, tid.s, the influence of the Coriolis force and.bound.ry cond.tions. The hyd.od.namic behaviour of the bay, water circulation, velocities at the surface and.in d.pth, water recharge and.resid.nce time throughout the bay, d.nsity variation and.other factors were examined.to d.termine the impact of all these on the aquatic ecosystem.

Greece boasts an impressive closed.coastline stretching across 13,676 km, making it the largest in the Med.terranean basin and.one of the largest in the world. Given the significant human activities that take place in coastal areas, und.rstand.ng the behavior of the sea environment becomes crucial. In this stud., we d.lve into the generation and.movement of marine currents as well as the retention time and.water age within the waters of Pagasitikos Sea inlet, Greece, through numerical simulation of hyd.od.namic characteristics. The main examined.points of the und.rstud. region are the area of the port of Volos, the Trikeri channel where the ingress and.egress of water from the Gulf takes place and.the exchange of seawater through circulation of the Pagasitikos Gulf with the North Evian Gulf. In ord.r to evaluate the results, they were compared.with real field.measurements and.with simulation on a laboratory d.mmy of the same area. The computational simulation was performed.with the ELCOM 2.2 numerical mod.ling tool and.the AEM3d.latest version and.the main factors simulated.are the tid., the consequence that Coriolis force, bound.ry cond.tions, the topography and.bottom geometry of the bay and.the actual meteorological cond.tions of a whole year.
