Simulation of heterogeneous two-phase media using random fields and level sets

The accurate and efficient simulation of random heterogeneous media is important in the framework of modeling and design of complex materials across multiple length scales. It is usually assumed that the morphology of a random microstructure can be described as a non-Gaussian random field that is completely defined by its multivariate distribution. A particular kind of non-Gaussian random fields with great practical importance is that of translation fields resulting from a simple memory-less transformation of an underlying Gaussian field with known second-order statistics. This paper provides a critical examination of existing random field models of heterogeneous two-phase media with emphasis on level-cut random fields which are a special case of translation fields. The case of random level sets, often used to represent the geometry of physical systems, is also examined. Two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the basic features of the different approaches.

In the past decade, multi-scale modelling in mathematical physics and engineering has been growing with vast advancement based on deterministic assumption. Because all information across scales contains a certain level of uncertainty due to incomplete knowledge and inherent chaos with respect to physical laws and parameters, a combination of multi-scale and stochastic techniques becomes a new approach. Incorporation of stochastic process into multi-scale modelling with accurate assessment of uncertainty propagation across scales is highly challenging but essential for a rising number of applications, and in certain areas such models can provide critical insights that deterministic approaches could never predict. In computational mechanics, research topics on discrete-to-continuum, stochastic-to-deterministic, and scale coupling are prioritized as the most significant directions. In the past half century, the finite element method has been a mature and widely-used numerical technique. When both multi-scale and stochastic phenomena are considered, cross-cutting multi-scale stochastic finite element modelling forms a novel research frontier. In this special issue,there are five original research papers relevant to multi-scale stochastic finite element methods or their applications.

BACKGROUND Total joint arthroplasty is one of the most common options for end stage osteoarthritis of major ***,we must take into account that thrombosis after hip/knee arthroplasty may be related to mutations in genes encoding for blood coagulation factors and immune reactions to anticoagulants[heparininduced thrombocytopenia(HIT)/thrombosis].Identifying and characterizing genetic risk should help to develop diagnostic strategies or modify anticoagulant options in the search for etiological mechanisms that cause thrombophilia following major orthopedic *** To evaluate the impact of patients’coagulation profiles and to study specific pharmacologic factors in the development of post-arthroplasty *** In 212(51 male and 161 female)patients that underwent primary total hip arthroplasty(100)or total knee arthroplasty(112)due to osteoarthritis during a period of 1 year,platelet counts and anti-platelet factor 4(PF4)/heparin antibodies were evaluated pre/postoperatively,and antithrombin III,methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase,factor V and prothrombin gene mutations were evaluated *** a minimum follow-up of 3 years,196 patients receiving either low-molecular-weight heparins(173)or fondaparinux(23)were monitored for the development of thrombocytopenia,anti-PF4/heparin antibodies,HIT,and *** Of 196 patients,32 developed thrombocytopenia(nonsignificant correlation between anticoagulant type and thrombocytopenia,P=0134.)and 18 developed anti-PF4/heparin antibodies(12/173 for low-molecular-weight heparins and 6/23 for fondaparinux;significant correlation between anticoagulant type and appearance of antibodies,P=0.005).Odds of antibody emergence:8.2%greater in patients receiving fondaparinux than low-molecular-weight *** mutations in factor II or V(two heterozygotes for both factor V and II)were identified in 15 of 196 *** low protein C and/or S levels were found in 3 of 196(1.5%)patients,while
