Small size does not restrain frugivory and seed dispersal across the evolutionary radiation of Galapagos lava lizards

Frugivory in lizards is often assumed to be constrained by body size;only large individuals are considered capable of consuming fruits, with the potential of acting as seed dispersers. However, only one previous study has tested the correlation of frugivory with body and head size at an archipelago scale across closely related species. All nine lava lizards (Microlophus spp.) were studied on the eleven largest Galapagos islands from 2010 to 2016 to investigate whether frugivory is related to body and head size. We also tested whether fruit abunda nee in flue nces fruit con sumption and explored the effect of seed ingestion on seedling emergence time and percentage. Our results showed that across islands, lava lizards varied considerably in size (64-102 mm in mean snoutvent length) and level of frugivory (1-23%, i.e., percentage of droppings with seeds). However, level of frugivory was only weakly affected by size as fruit consumption was also common among small lizards. Lava lizards consumed fruits throughout the year and factors other than fruit abundance may be more importa nt drivers of fruit selecti on (e.g., fruit size, energy con tent of pulp). From 2,530 droppings, 1,714 seeds of at least 61 plant species were identified, 76% of the species being native to the Galapagos. Most seeds (91%) showed no external structural damage. Seedling emergence time (44 versus 118 days) and percentage (20% versus 12%) were enhanced for lizardingested seeds compared to control (uningested) fruits. De-pulping by lizards (i.e., removal of pulp with potential germi nation inhibitors) might in crease the chances that at least some seeds find suitable recruitment conditi ons. We con eluded that lizards are importa nt seed dispersers throughout the year and across the whole archipelago, regardless of body size.

Nexus of Climate Change and USA Mid-South Rice (<i>Oryza sativa</i>L.) Production

Climate change is manifesting across the USA Mid-South and is impacting agricultural productivity, including the production of rice. This manuscript is a review of pertinent global literature concerning the effect of increasing temperature and carbon dioxide concentrations involving: 1) rice growth and development with an emphasis on spikelet sterility, 2) water availability for irrigation with the specter of aquifer overdraft and emerging water management technologies intended to improve water use efficiency, 3) the soil-plant continuum related to greenhouse gas emission and research avenues supporting agronomic practices that limit these emissions, and 4) region wide assessment of the economic and agronomic indicators to infer changes in the agricultural infrastructure and markets. Based on the global literature review and specific circumstances for USA Mid-South rice production, explicit proposals to mitigate and alleviate climate change are proposed. Key climate change mitigation proposals include: 1) support irrigation technologies that limit water usage and reduce methane emissions, 2) support soil carbon enhancement and newly emerging soil health agronomic practices, 3) achieve a greater usage of remote sensing activities to detect, in real time, field stresses, 4) support rice breeding activities that benefit furrow irrigation and provide heat tolerance, and 5) coordinate a rice region wide consensus to achieve farm gate activities that address climate change.

Mathematical Modeling of Hydrogels Swelling Based on the Finite Element Method

In recent years, hydrogels have been introduced as new materials suitable for applications in areas such as biomedical engineering, agriculture, etc. The rate and degree of hydrogel swelling are important parameters that control the diffusion of drugs or solvents inside a polymer network. Therefore, the description of the dynamic swelling process of the hydrogels is very important in applications that require precise control of the absorption of solvents inside the hydrogel structure. To date, most of the numerical models developed for describing the swelling process are based in the finite difference methods. Even though numerical models supported in finite differences can be easily implemented, their use is limited to samples with very simple shapes. In this paper, a new model based on the finite element method is proposed. The diffusion equation is solved in a time-deformable grid. An original procedure is proposed to numerically solve the non-linear algebraic equation system that permits computing a new grid for each time-step. Hydrogel samples of different shapes were prepared in order to conduct experimental tests to validate the numerical proposed model. Numerical results show that the new model is able to describe the mass and shape changes in the hydrogel samples in time. An application of the numerical model to determine the relation between diffusion coefficients and density in Poly-acrylamide samples allows verifying the versatility of the model.

This paper proposes a simple solution for the stabilization of a mini-quadcopter carrying a 3DoF（degrees of freedom） manipulator robot in order to enhance its achievable workspace and application profile. Since the motion of the arm induces torques which degrade the stability of the system, in the present work, we consider the stabilization of both subsystems： the quadcopter and the robotic arm. The mathematical model of the system is based on quaternions. Likewise, an attitude control law consisting of a bounded quaternion-based feedback stabilizes the quadcopter to a desired attitude while the arm is evolving. The next stage is the translational dynamics which is simplified for control（nonlinear） design purposes. The aforementioned controllers are based on saturation functions whose stability is explicitly proved in the Lyapunov sense. Finally, experimental results and a statistical study validate the proposed control strategy.

Chitosan coatings with distinct innate immune bioactivities differentially stimulate angiogenesis,osteogenesis and chondrogenesis in poly-caprolactone scaffolds with controlled interconnecting pore size

This study tested whether osseous integration into poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)bioplastic scaffolds with fully-interconnecting 155±8μm pores is enhanced by an adhesive,non-inflammatory 99% degree of deacetylation(DDA)chitosan coating(99-PCL),or further incorporation of pro-inflammatory 83% DDA chitosan microparticles(83-99-PCL)to accelerate *** Zealand White rabbit osteochondral knee defects were press-fit with PCL,99-PCL,83-99-PCL,or allowed to bleed(drill-only).Between day 1 and 6 weeks of repair,drill-only defects repaired by endochondral ossification,with an 8-fold higher bone volume fraction(BVF)versus initial defects,compared to a 2-fold(99-PCL),1.1-fold(PCL),or 0.4-fold(83-99-PCL)change in *** innate immune cells swarmed to 83-99-PCL,elicited angiogenesis throughout the pores and induced slight bone *** and 99-PCL pores were variably filled with cartilage or avascular mesenchyme near the bone plate,or angiogenic mesenchyme into which repairing trabecular bone infiltrated up to 1 mm *** repair cartilage covered the 99-PCL scaffold(65%)than PCL(18%)or 83-99-PCL(0%)(p<0.005).We report the novel finding that non-inflammatory chitosan coatings promoted cartilage infiltration into and over a bioplastic scaffold,and were compatible with trabecular bone *** study also revealed that in vitro osteogenesis assays have limited ability to predict osseous integration into porous scaffolds,because(1)in vivo,woven bone integrates from the leading edge of regenerating trabecular bone and not from mesenchymal cells adhering to scaffold surfaces,and(2)bioactive coatings that attract inflammatory cells induce bone resorption.

FPGA Implementation of Predictive Hysteresis Current Control for Grid Connected VSI

Grid connected voltage source inverters (VSIs) are essential for the integration of the distributed energy resources. Hysteresis current control (HCC) is a commonly employed method for power control of VSIs. This control method, in contrast with voltage control, provides good dynamics, good stability and implicit over current protection. However, the most important concern of digital implementation of HCC is related with the sampling period of the measured currents. This paper presents a predictive hysteresis current control (HCC) for grid connected voltage source inverter and its FPGA implementation. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the validity of the proposed implementation.

Energetic Macroscopic Representation of an Electrically Heated Building with Electric Thermal Storage and Heating Control for Peak Shaving

As a part of the Smart Grid concept, an efficient energy management at the residential level has received increasing attention in lately research. Its main focus is to balance the energy consumption in the residential environment in order to avoid the undesirable peaks faced by the electricity supplier. This challenge can be achieved by means of a home energy management system (HEMS). The HEMS may consider local renewable energy production and energy storage, as well as local control of some particular loads when peaks mitigation is necessary. This paper presents the modeling and comparison of two residential systems;one using conventional electric baseboard heating and the other one supported by Electric Thermal Storage (ETS);the ETS is employed to optimize the local energy utilization pursuing the peak shaving of residential consumption profile. Simulations of the proposed architecture using the Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR) demonstrate the potential of ETS technologies in future HEMS.

Migrant Laborers in China and Their Contributions to Rural Development

This paper will look at the importance that the migrant labors in China are doing today. The main question posed in this paper is “how migrant labors in China are contributing to rural development？”. Furthermore, the paper will answer the following sub-questions：（1） Is migration an important factor in the development of rural areas？（2） Can migration bridge the poverty gap between urban and rural areas？ The objectives of this paper are the following：（1） to identify the migrant labors contributions in China’s rural development; （2） to look into the importance of migration for the rural Chinese; and （3） to know and analyze the problems that migrant workers in China are facing in relation to their migratory work. Furthermore, this paper posits that migrant labors in China are contributing to rural development through their remittances, their investments, and the new knowledge and techniques that they acquired in the urban areas which they share in their home areas. In addition to that, this research looks at the migrant labors’ remittances, their investments, and the new knowledge and techniques that they acquired in their home areas as their contributions to rural development.
