Contraception among Women Aged 35 and over at the University Hospital Center of Brazzaville

Objective: To study contraception among women aged 35 and over at the University Hospital of Brazzaville. Population and Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study, conducted from April 1st 2017 to January 31st 2022 in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the University Hospital of Brazzaville, including women aged 35 years and over who had received a contraceptive method. The study variables were sociodemographic, reproductive, clinical and contraceptive method related. results: Two hundred and thirty customers were collected during the study period, i.e., 10.8% of the patients who received contraception. They were 38.4 ± 3 years old on average, had secondary education (46.1%), were of low socioeconomic status (54.3%), lived with a partner (98.7%) and came from an urban area (97.4%). They were multigravida (85.2%), and multiparous (63.9%) with an average of 4 living children. The indications were of two types: convenience (26.2%) and medical (73.8%). The most commonly used contraceptives were implants (72.2%) and injectable progestin (20.5%). Conclusion: The indication for contraception for women over 35 years of age at the University Hospital Center of Brazzaville is more medical, with the use of long-acting contraceptives.

Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Mothers regarding Breastfeeding in the University Hospital Center of Brazzaville (republic of Congo)

Objective: To analyze the knowledge, attitudes and practices of mothers about breastfeeding at the Brazzaville University Hospital Center. Population and Methods: Analytical KAP study, conducted from February 1 to May 31, 2019, including exclusively manner mothers who have started breastfeeding for at least 4 months and at most 24 months in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The study variables were related to socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and practices. results: One hundred and forty mothers were questioned. They were of a median age of 30, multiparous (61.5%), in a couple (78.6%), with gainful activity (47.9%). They had enough knowledge (87.1%) but harmful in 26.5% of cases, adapted attitudes (95%) with answers of different certainties, and bad practices (60%). Knowledge did not influence attitudes (p > 0.2). Knowledge and attitudes influenced practices (p Conclusion: An educational strategy on mothers’ knowledge and attitudes towards breastfeeding would help improve their breastfeeding practices.

Polymyomectomy during Cesarean Section at the University Hospital Center of Brazzaville (Congo): About a Case and review of the Literature

Introduction: Myomectomy during cesarean section has long been a controversial subject. The increased risk of intraoperative hemorrhage and potential hysterectomy has led many teams to contraindicate it, postponing it three to six months after delivery, thus giving more time for uterine involution, myoma shrinkage and reducing operative time and blood loss. Clinical Observation: We report the case of a polymyomectomy after use of a segmental tourniquet and bilateral ligation of the hypogastric arteries during a cesarean section for hemorrhagic placenta previa at the end of a spontaneous pregnancy of 28 weeks of amenorrhea in a 42-year-old nulliparous primigravida patient. Conclusion: Polymyomectomy during cesarean section is possible and requires knowledge of preventive hemostasis techniques and surgical experience.

Split hand/foot malformation (SHFM), formerly known as ectrodactyly is a rare congénital anomaly, its incidence varies from 1/8.500 to 1/25.000 live birth. It mainly affects the development of the limbs, its clinical variability is standard, can present as an isolated feature or as a syndrome associated with other congenital anomalies. Our objective was to present the two cases of SHFM, and to review the literature on the clinical aspects and discuss a probable origin. The father went to school and is a driver because the malformations concerned only the fingers, were less severe, and did not prevent the realization of certain simple gestures of the daily life. On the other hand, the malformations of the fingers of the newborn were severe and the absence of the thumbs compromised the later prehension function. Also the association of a microglossia and a cleft palate contributed to a weight loss that justified hospitalization. The clinical presentation of split hands and feet is variable and the prognosis depends on the type of anomaly. Familial cases suggest a probable genetic origin. Genetic testing is necessary to establish genetic counseling.
