Urbanization,population growth,and the accelerating consumption of food,energy,and water(FEW)resources bring unprecedented challenges for economic,environmental,and social(EES)*** is imperative to understand the potential impacts of FEW systems on the realization of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)as the world transitions from natural ecosystems to managed ecosystems at an accelerating rate.A major obstacle is the complexity and emergent behavior of FEW systems and associated networks,for which no single discipline can generate a holistic understanding or meaningful *** propose a research enterprise framework for promoting transdisciplinarity and top-down quantification of the interrelationships between FEW and EES *** enterprise efforts would emphasize increasing FEW resource accessibility by improving coordinated interplays across sectors and scales,expanding and diversifying supply-chain networks,and innovating technologies for efficient resource *** framework can guide the development of strategic solutions for diminishing the competition among FEW-consuming sectors in a region or country,and for minimizing existing inequalities in FEW availability when a sustainable development agenda is implemented.

Since severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS‐CoV‐2)was first identified during late 2019,the sustained spread of this pathogen within the human population has caused worldwide disruption with staggering infection rates and death *** to the accumulation of mutations in SARS‐CoV‐2,the virus has evolved into many variants,five of which have been listed as variants of concern VOCs by the World Health Organization(WHO).Multiple animal models of SARS‐CoV‐2 have been developed to evaluate vaccines and drugs and to assess the pathogenicity,transmissibility and antiviral measures of these ***,we review the cutting‐edge research based on mouse,hamster,ferret and non‐human primate models for evaluating SARS‐CoV‐2 with a focus on the Omicron variant,and highlight the importance of updating vaccines in a timely manner in order to mitigate the negative effects of SARS‐CoV‐2 infections in the human population.

Evaluation of immobilizing agents as soil quality conditioners in addition to their metal(loid) immobilizing effect

In trace metal (TM)-contaminated agricultural soils,management of TM availability is important for safe crop *** addition,maintenance or improvement of soil quality is vital for sustainable crop *** TM phytoavailability and increased soil quality can be achieved by the application of various immobilizing agents to soil,which can supply both macronutrients and organic *** study investigated the long-term influences of four common immobilizing agents on soil biogeochemical properties and the phytoavailability of TMs in mixed metal-contaminated soil from a cultivated upland near an abandoned mining *** (L),gypsum (G),fly ash (F),and animal manure-based compost (C) were applied to pots containing contaminated soil,either individually or in *** incubation for three years under sequential cultivation of two crops and fallow,soil biogeochemical properties were determined,and Brassica rapa plant bioassay was *** phytoavailability of all TMs (both cationic metals and anionic metalloids) remained significantly lower in soils treated with immobilizing agents even after three years,when compared with the no-agent control (CK) *** addition,the soil quality was significantly improved by treatment with immobilizing *** instance,the C and L+C treatments were the most effective in improving soil physical (bulk density,porosity,and water-resistant aggregate stability),chemical (pH,organic matter,total nitrogen,cation exchange capacity,and plant-available phosphorus,magnesium,and potassium),and biological (microbial biomass carbon and dehydrogenase activity) *** improvement of soil properties and lowering of TM bioavailability were also consistent with the most significant increase in *** biomass production observed in the C treatment,followed by the L+C,G+F,L,G,F,and L+G treatments,as compared with that in *** results indicate that the function of the TM-immobilizing agent as a soil qualit

The effect of EMG magnitude on the masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potential(mVEMP)

Introduction:The masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potential(mVEMP)is a bilaterally generated,electromyographically(EMG)-mediated response innervated by the trigeminal *** purpose of the present investigation was to 1)determine whether subjects could accurately achieve and maintain a range of EMG target levels,2)to examine the effects of varied EMG levels on the latencies and amplitudes of the mVEMP,and 3)to investigate the degree of side-to-side asymmetry and any effects of EMG ***:Subjects were nine neurologically and otologically normal young adults.A high-intensity tone burst was presented monaurally while subjects were seated upright and asked to match a range of EMG target levels by clenching their *** were made from the ipsilateral and contralateral masseter muscles referenced to the ear being monaurally ***:We found that the tonic EMG target had no effect on mVEMP ***,although mVEMP amplitudes“scaled”to the EMG target,there was a tendency for the subjects’EMG level to“undershoot”the EMG target levels greater than 50 *** some individuals did generate differences in EMG activation between sides,there were no significant differences on average EMG activation between ***,while average corrected amplitude asymmetry was similar across EMG targets,some individuals demonstrated large,corrected amplitude asymmetry ***:The results of this investigation suggest that,as with cVEMP recordings,the underlying EMG activation may vary between subjects and could impact mVEMP amplitudes,yet could be mitigated by amplitude correction *** it is important to be aware that even young normal subjects have difficulty maintaining large,tonic EMG activity during the mVEMP recording.

Origins of Ultrafast Pulse Laser-Induced Nano Straight Lines with Potential Applications in Detecting Subsurface Defects in Silicon Carbide Wafers

The inspection of silicon carbide(SiC)wafer quality has attracted considerable attention because internal microstructure defects are challenging to detect in production *** and destructive methods are usually employed to detect dislocations and stacking faults inside SiC *** optical methods to monitor internal defects are in *** this work,an ultrafast pulse laser was used to address this *** formation of surface nanostructures under the ultrafast laser processing of SiC wafers was explored *** study discovered the origins of a typical surface nanostructure to the subsurface dislocation structure,called low-energy laser-induced nano straight lines(LLINSs),which forms under low-energy ultrafast pulse laser irradiation on a SiC *** specific laser fluence ranges to form grooves,laser-induced periodic surface structures,LLINSs,and their hybrids were *** formation of LLINSs required an ultrafast laser(pulse width 280 fs)energy density less than 0.224 J/mm2,whereas that of pure LLINSs required a small range of 0.1–0.08 J/mm2 for *** and their surrounding microstructures were observed using scanning transmission electron microscopy to identify their origin,which is related to the subsurface dislocation *** dynamics analysis revealed that the subsurface defect area has a high energy level,which can facilitate amorphous transformation under the irradiation of an ultrafast laser,and the amorphous area had a tendency to evolve into ***,subsurface lattice defects can be detected *** work opens new ways to detect the subsurface quality of semiconductor wafers in a green and sustainable manner.

Kinetics of Local Anesthetic Interactions with Model Membranes: Adsorption and Permeation

Introduction: Local anesthetics (LAs) must be adsorbed to and permeate through membranes to reach their sites of action. The rates of these processes critically affect drug actions at the cellular level and also the in vivo pharmacokinetics of perineurally injected drugs. Therefore, we measured the adsorption equilibria and permeation kinetics of two LAs local anesthetics with markedly different hydrophobicities: tetracaine (TTC, Poctanol:buffer = 3.6 × 103) and procaine (PRO, Poctanol:buffer = 8.1 × 101), in unilamellar membranes of different composition and fluidity. Methods: Interactions with unilamellar vesicles made of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), at 23°C (solid gel state) or 45°C (liquid crystal state), without or with cholesterol (Chol), were investigated by a combination of fluorescence and stopped-flow techniques. Membrane adsorption was monitored by the LA’s fluorescence. Membrane permeation was monitored by the decrease of fluorescence intensity of intra-vesicular pyranine, when quenched by neighboring TTC or PRO. Results: Ionized TTC (TTCH+) and procaine (PROH+) adsorb to membranes more slowly and weakly than their neutral counterparts (time constant τ ~ 0.1 sec). Fluidizing of membranes, at the higher temperature (45°C) or by Chol inclusion, accelerated LA adsorption (faster than the mixing time of the stopped-flow device, 0.008 s). Permeation of protonated TTCH+ through the solid gel DPPC membranes (23°C) occurred far more slowly than adsorption, (τ = 36.7 ± 0.7 s, n = 9), and 3 times slower than neutral TTC (τ = 10.9 ± 0.7 s, n = 9);neutral PRO permeated these membranes at the same rate as TTC. Inclusion of Chol with DPPC, disordering the fatty acyl tails of membrane phospholipids while crowding their polar headgroups, slowed permeation of TTC and of PRO to an even greater degree. Turbulence modelling of the aerodynamic interaction ofOGV wakes and diffuser flow

Different turbulence closures were used to predict the flow interaction between the wakes created by compressor outlet guide vanes(OGVs) and a downstream annular *** statistical turbulence models were tested based on the classical Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) *** high-Re and low-Re(Launder-Sharma) versions of the k-ε model were applied to a selected test problem for OGV wake/diffuser *** test problem was specifically chosen because experimentally determined inlet conditions and both profile and performance data were available to validate predictions.A preliminary study was also reported of the more advanced large eddy simulation(LES) *** LES sub-grid-scale(SGS) model was the basic Smagorinsky eddy viscosity assumption,with a Van-Driest damping function for improved capture of near-wall viscous *** between the two RANS models showed little difference in terms of velocity contours at OGV trailing edge and diffuser *** terms of overall diffuser performance(static pressure recovery and total pressure loss coefficients),the high-Re model was shown to agree well with experimental *** preliminary LES study indicates the highly unsteady character of the OGV wake flow,but requires improved treatment of inlet conditions.

In this paper, we give the state of the art for the so called “mixed spectral elements” for Maxwell＇s equations. Several families of elements, such as edge elements and discon-tinuous Galerkin methods （DGM） are presented and discussed. In particular, we show the need of introducing some numerical dissipation terms to avoid spurious modes in these methods. Such terms are classical for DGM but their use for edge element methods is novel approach described in this paper. Finally, numerical experiments show the fast and low-cost character of these elements.
