Magnetooptics of non-Kramers Eu^(3+) ions in garnets:analysis complemented by crystal-field splitting modeling calculations

Spectra of absorption, luminescence, magnetic circular dichroism （MCD）, and magnetic circular polarization of lumines- cence （MCPL） in Gd3Ga5O12：Eu3＋ and Eu3Ga3O12 garnets were studied within the visible spectral range at 300 K. Analysis of the spectral and temperature dependences of the magnetooptical and optical spectra made it possible to identify the magneto-dipole （MD） and electro-dipole （ED） 4f→4f transitions occurring between Stark sublevels of the 7FJ （J=1, 2） and 5D0 multiplets in Eua＋-containing garnet structures. Quantum mechanical ＂mixing＂ had significant influence on quasi-degenerate states of the non-Kramers rare-earth Eu3＋ ion for Eu3GasOl2 in MCD due to forbidden MD transition 7F1→SD0 and for GdaGasOiE：EU3＋ in MCPL due to MD 4f→4f transition 5Do→7F1 and forced ED-transition 5Do→7F2. A parameterized Hamiltonian defined to operate within the entire 4f（6） ground electronic configuration of Eu3＋ ion was used to model the experimental Stark levels, including their irreducible rep- resentations and wavefunctions. The crystal-field parameters were determined through a Monte-Carlo method in which nine in- dependent crystal-field parameters, Bkq, were given random starting values and optimized using standard least-squares fitting between calculated and experimental levels. The final fitting standard deviation between 57 calculated-to-experimental levels was 0.73 meV.

The development of perovskite photoelectric devices with excellent performance is largely dependent on the defects in the perovskite *** address this issue,a specific drug,leflunomide(LF,C_(12)H_(9)F_(3)N_(2)O_(2)),was incorporated into the perovskite to reduce defects and improve its photoelectric *** is believed that the C=O bond on LF molecule can interact with the uncoordinated Pb2+of the perovskite,thereby reducing non-radiative *** novel approach of incorporating LF into perovskite films has the potential to revolutionize the development of high-performance perovskite photoelectric *** trifluoromethyl functional(–CF_(3))group on LF can form a protective layer on the surface of the perovskite film,shielding it from water ***,LF can be utilized to alter the nucleation position of perovskite,thus minimizing the number of defects and optimizing the film ***,the LF-doped perovskite film displays low trap density and high photoelectric *** LF-doped perovskite film showed a trap density of 8.28×10^(11),which is notably lower than the 2.04×10^(12) of the perovskite film without *** responsivity and detectivity of the LF-doped perovskite photodetector were 0.771 A/w and 2.81×10^(11) Jones,respectively,which are much higher than the 0.23 A/w and 1.06×10^(10) Jones of the LF-undoped perovskite ***,the LF-doped photodetector maintained an initial photocurrent of 86%after 30 days of storage in air,indicating drastically increased environmental *** strongly suggests that LF is an effective additive for perovskites utilized in optoelectronic devices with high performance.

Objectives:Persistent olfactory dysfunction(OD)following loss of smell associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection is a major feature of long *** on the prevalence of persistent OD predominantly rely on self-reported olfactory *** studies have tracked longitudinal rates of recovery using psychophysical assessment among patients presenting for evaluation of persistent OD beyond a window of acute *** anchored in standardized testing methods are needed to counsel patients who fail to acutely regain their sense of *** study aims to quantify the degree of persistent OD in post-COVID-19 patients who experience subjective and psychophysical ***:we grouped participants presenting for OD evaluation into cohorts based on both subjective and psychophysical olfactory status at a baseline assessment and assessed their olfactory abilities with a visual analogue scale and the Sniffin'Sticks extended test at baseline and 1-year time *** had confirmed a history of COVID-19 by lab evaluation or clinical diagnosis if lab evaluation was not ***:Baseline olfactory evaluation was completed by 122 participants,53 of whom completed the 1-year follow-up *** participants presenting with perceived OD,74.5%had confirmed psychophysical OD at baseline,with 55.1%at 1-year *** had reliable trends in self-rated versus psychophysically tested olfactory function at both time *** total threshold,discrimination,and identification(TDI)score improved by+3.25 points in the cohort with psychophysical OD(p=0.0005),with this improvement largely attributable to an increase in median threshold scores(+2.75 points;p=0.0004).Conclusions:OD persists in a significant number of patients who fail to acutely recovery their sense of smell after COVID-19,with many demonstrating lingering deficits at *** in threshold,but not discrimination or identification,most significantly mediate improvement

Luteolin， a common flavone in vegetables， acts as a hormetin possessing neurotrophic function: signaling mediated by inducing mitochondrial stress

This study aims to uncover the hormetic process of luteolin， a common dietary flavone， in neuronal cells through its role in inducing mitochondrial stress. In rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells， luteolin at low concentrations caused a mild and reversible loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP)， while high concentrations of luteolin triggered intense and sustained depolarization of MMP. The MMP disturbance was shown to have a close association with the trophic and/or toxic effects triggered by luteolin; because the common mitochondrial uncouplers shared similar bi-phase dose-response on cell viability， as that of luteolin. Along with the induced MMP pertubation， luteolin triggered the development of autophagy and mitophagy， as determined by mCherry-GFP-LC3B tandem protein， and by the co-localization of mitochondrial/lysosomal staining. Subsequent application of autophagy inhibitors in the cultures blocked the luteolin-induced neurotrophic activities and sensitized the cells to be less resistant to luteolin-mediated cytotoxicity. Other flavonoids also displayed similar properties in the cultures， indicating that these compounds act as hormetic pharmacological inducers that stimulate cells to become more resilient and adapt to threats. This study provides a unifying mechanistic explanation for the neuro-beneficial effects of luteolin and other flavonoids.

Specific features of Eu^(3+) and Tb^(3+) magnetooptics in gadolinium-gallium garnet (Gd_3Ga_5O_(12))

we reported magnetooptical properties of Eu3＋（4f（6）） and Tb3＋（4f（8）） in single crystals of Gd3Ga5O12 （GGG）, Y3Ga5O12 （YGG）, and Eu3＋（4f（6）） in Eu3Ga5O12 （EuGG） for both ions occupying sites of D2 symmetry in the garnet structure. Absorption, luminescence, and magnetic circular polarization of luminescence （MCPL） spectra of Tb3＋ in GGG and YGG and absorption and magnetic circular dichroism （MCD） of Eu3＋ in EuGG were studied. The data were obtained at 85 K and room temperature （RT）. Magnetic susceptibility of Eu3＋ in EuGG was also measured between 85 K and RT. The magnetooptical and magnetic susceptibility data were modeled using the wavefunctions of the crystal-field split energy （Stark） levels of Eu3＋ and Tb3＋ occupying D2 sites in the same garnets. The results reported gave a precise determination of these Stark level assignments and confirmed the symmetry labels （irreducible representations） of the closely-spaced Stark levels （quasi-doublets） found in the 5D1 （Eu3＋） and 5D4 （Tb3＋） multiplets. Ultraviolet （UV） excitation （300 nm） of the 6PJ and 6IJ states of Gd3＋ in the doped GGG crystals led to emission from 5D4 （Tb3＋） and 5D1 and 5D0 （Eu3＋） through radiationless energy transfer to the 4f（n–1）5d band of Tb3＋ and to UV quintet states of Eu3＋. The temperature-dependent emission line shapes and line shifts of the magnetooptical transitions excited by UV radiation suggested a novel way to explore energy transfer mechanisms in this rare-earth doped garnet system.

Very recently,unusual thrombotic events in combination with severe thrombocytopenia have been reported 1–2 weeks following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with ChAdOx1 nCov-19(AstraZeneca).This condition,termed VITT(vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia),has been related to high risk of fatal outcome with both ischaemic and haemorrhagic complications.12 Optimal treatment strategies still need to be elucidated—especially in case of cerebral sinus venous thrombosis(CSVT)with associated brain haemorrhage as the underlying thrombotic *** here report our clinical experience with two young women diagnosed with VITT-associated CSVT,treated with high-dose intravenous immunoglobulins(IVIGs),corticosteroids and argatroban in the hyperacute phase,followed by dabigatran resulting in excellent outcome.

Priming of antiherbivore defensive responses in plants

Abstract Defense priming is defined as increased readiness of defense induction. A growing body of literature indicates that plants （or intact parts of a plant） are primed in anticipation of impending environmental stresses, both biotic and abiotic, and upon the following stimulus, induce defenses more quickly and strongly. For instance, some plants previously exposed to herbivore-inducible plant volatiles （HIPVs） from neighboring plants under herbivore attack show faster or stronger defense activation and enhanced insect resistance when challenged with secondary insect feeding. Research on priming of antiherbivore defense has been limited to the HIPV-mediated mechanism until recently, but significant advances were made in the past three years, including non-HIPV-mediated defense priming, epigenetic modifications as the molecular mechanism of priming, and others. It is timely to consider the advances in research on defense priming in the plant- insect interactions.

Vertebrate species introductions in the United States and its territories

At least 1,065 introduced vertebrate species have been introduced in the United States and its territories, including at least 86 mammalian, 127 avian, 179 reptilian/amphibian, and 673 fish species. Examples in each major taxonomic group include domestic cat, small Indian mongoose, red fox, goat, pig, rabbit, rats, house mouse, gray squirrel, nutria, starling, Indian common myna, red-vented bulbul, brown treesnake, red-eared slider, brown trout, tilapia, and grass carp. we briefly review some of these species and the types of damage they cause. we then review the basic types of methods used for control or eradication of each taxonomic group, including physical, chemical, biological, and cultural methods. we discuss some of the challenges in managing these species, including issues with the use of toxicants, land access, public attitudes, and monitoring difficulties. Finally, we list some ongoing research and future research needs, including improved detection methods, improved attractants, improved barriers, improved capture methods, fertility control, and risk assessment methods.
