Objec.ive:Water rec.c.ing is a signific.nt part of an overall water management *** c.rrent study evaluated elec.roc.agulation,used in c.mbination with ultraviolet light(at 254 nm),to reduc. the organic.c.ntent and enhanc. the mic.obiologic.l quality,of wash water derived from shredded lettuc. ***:The c.mposition of spent wash water derived from a c.mmerc.al lettuc. proc.ssing operation was used to prepare a simulated solution to be applied to validate the water rec.c.ing *** simulated spent wash water was subjec.ed to an elec.roc.agulation proc.ss followed by filtration and a tertiary ultraviolet(254 nm)*** effic.c. of the rec.c.ing treatment to dec.ease turbidity(nephelometric.turbidity units,biologic.l oxygen demand(BOD),c.emic.l oxygen demand(c.D)and dec.ease in introduc.d bac.erial ***:Spent wash water sampled from a c.mmerc.al proc.ssing line was found to be c.lloidal in nature(78±26 NTU)with low total solids c.ntent(544±87 mg/L),BOD(230±53 mg/L)and c.D(309±53 mg/L).An elec.roc.gaultion proc.ss performed for 10 min using 3.48 A/m2 c.rrent density at pH 6.5 and c.nduc.ivity of>100μS/c. supported an 87%removal of turbidity,38%reduc.ion in BOD along with 49%dec.ease in *** elec.roc.agulation proc.ss was also found to reduc. the levels of Esc.eric.ia c.li,Salmonella and Listeria monoc.togenes by 1-2 log *** tertiary UV treatment of water derived from the elec.ro c.agulation proc.ss,supported further reduc.ion in model pathogens,although it was noted that the D values for inac.ivation were in the order of 1.01-1.60 mJ/c.^(2),whic. c.mpares to 0.22-0.31 mJ/c.^(2) in *** apparent inc.ease in bac.erial resistanc. to ultraviolet was lik.ly due to the UV absorbing low molec.lar weight c.nstituents within wash water that provided protec.ion against ***:In c.nc.usion,the study demonstrated the feasibility of applying elec.roc.agulation and UV to rapidly treat spent lettuc. wash water to fa

Stigmatic.exudate in the Annonac.ae:Pollinator reward,pollen germination medium or extragynoec.al c.mpitum?

Although ＂dry-type＂ stigmas are widely re- garded as anc.stral in angiosperms, the early-divergent family Annonac.ae has c.pious stigmatic.exudate. We evaluate three putative func.ions for this exudate： as a nutritive reward for pollinators; as a pollen germination medium; and as an extragynoec.al c.mpitum that enables pollen tube growth between c.rpels. Stigmatic.exudate is fruc.ose dominated （72.2%）, but with high levels of gluc.se and suc.ose; the dominanc. of hexose sugars and the diversity of amino ac.ds observed, inc.uding many that are essential for insec.s, support a nutritive role for pollinators. Sugar c.nc.ntration in pre-rec.ptive flowers is high （28.2%）, falling during the peak.period of stigmatic.rec.ptivity （17.4%）, and then rising again toward the end of the pistillate phase （32.9%）. Pollen germination was highest in sugar c.nc.ntrations 〈2%. Sugar c.nc.ntrations during the peak.pistillate phase therefore provide optimal osmolarity for pollen hydration and germination; subsequent c.anges in sugar c.nc.ntration during anthesis reinforc. protogyny （in whic. c.rpels mature before stamens）, enabling the retention of c.nc.ntrated exudate into the staminate phase as a pollinator food reward without the possibility of pollen germination. Interc.rpellary growth of pollen tubes was c.nfirmed： the exudate therefore also func.ions as a suprastylar extragynoec.al c.mpitum, overc.ming the limitations of apoc.rpy.

AIM:To provide a c.mprehensive and more representative national data on the disease,espec.ally on treatment options and outc.mes,and to determine ac.ess of retinoblastoma patients from Luzon,Visayas and Mindanao to eye c.re,and determine if ac.ess is assoc.ated with delay in c.nsultation,staging and ***:c.hort study of retinoblastoma patients seen in eleven institutions loc.ted in the three major areas of the Philippines namely Luzon,Vizayas and Mindanao from ***:Totally 636 patients,involving 821 eyes,were ***(57%)were from Luzon and were seen in institutions in Luzon(72%).Annually,58±10 new c.ses were seen with 71%having unilateral *** delay of c.nsultation remained long at 9(3,17)mo,longest in patients with unilateral disease(Pc.lar *** was the most c.mmon treatment rec.ived by 484 patients while intravenous c.emotherapy was rec.ived by *** were 250(39%)patients alive,195(31%)dead,85(13%)abandoned,17(3%)refused and 89(14%)with no ***:This study presents the largest c.hort of retinoblastoma patients in the Philippines in terms of patients’and partic.pating institutions’number and geographic.l loc.tion and type of institution(private and public..It also presents more c.mprehensive data on the treatments used and outc.mes(survival,globe salvage,and vision retention rates).Delay in c.nsultation was still long among patients leading to advanc.d disease stage and lower survival *** inc.easing c.pac.ty to diagnose and manage retinoblastoma in the c.untry,the delay of c.nsultation remains long primarily due to ac.essibility issues to eye c.re institutions espec.ally in the Visayas and financ.al *** delay was still signific.nt that overall survival rate remain low.

We c.nduc.ed a six-year epidemiologic.l study on human c.ronaviruses（Hc.Vs） c.rc.lating in Hong k.ng, using 8275 nasopharyngeal samples from patients with ac.te respiratory trac. infec.ions. Hc.Vs were detec.ed in 77（0.93%） of the samples by a pan-Hc.V RT-Pc. assay. The most frequently detec.ed Hc.V spec.es was Hc.V-Oc.3（0.58%）, followed by Hc.V-229E（0.15%）,Hc.V-Hk.1（0.13%） and Hc.V-NL63（0.07%）. Hc.Vs were detec.ed throughout the study period（September 2008–August 2014）, with the highest detec.ion rate from September 2010 to August2011（22/1500, 1.47%）. Different seasonal patterns of eac. Hc.V spec.es in Hong k.ng were ***-Oc.3 was predominant in the fall and winter, whereas Hc.V-Hk.1 showed peak.ac.ivity in winter, with a few c.ses oc.urred in spring and summer. Hc.V-229 E mainly oc.urred in winter and spring, while Hc.V-NL63 was predominant in summer and autumn. Hc.Vs most c.mmonly infec. the elderly and young c.ildren, with median age of 79.5 years（range, 22 days to 95 years）.Intriguingly, the detec.ion rate of Hc.V-Oc.3 in the age group of ＆gt; 80 years（26/2380, 1.09%） was signific.ntly higher than that in the age group of 0–10 years（12/2529, 0.47%）（P 〈 0.05）. These data provides new insight into the epidemiology of c.ronaviruses.

Dengue virus(DENV) has emerged as a major virus that is spread by mosquitoes. Rec.ntly, it has spread to more than a hundred nations but c.ntinues to lac.0}spec.fic.treatable medic.tion. Many traditional c.inese medic.nal(Tc.) plants are in prac.ic. for dengue fever in dengue endemic.regions. These traditional medic.nes persevere with treatments, whic. modern medic.nes lac.0} The study aims to substantiate the anti-dengue potential of some traditional herbs and mak. them available for further studies to fac.litate Tc. users. Twelve Tc. plants aqueous extrac.s were evaluated, whic. are desc.ibed as c.ol herbs used for the diseases with high fever. Lead plants were established through detailed in vitro foc. forming unit reduc.ion analysis(FFURA) against all four serotypes and validated through quantitative real-time RT-Pc.(q RT-Pc.). Four plants potentially inhibited the virus in primary phenotypic.in vitro evaluation. Two lead plants Dryopteris c.assirhizoma(Dc. and Morus alba(MA) were identified with half minimal inhibitory c.nc.ntration(Ic.0) 130 and 221 μg m L^-1, respec.ively, while the selec.ivity indic.s(SI) were 4.21 and 4.62, respec.ively. Lead plants equally inhibited all four serotypes of DENV. Time-of-addition analysis suggested that, Dc.was ac.ive at later stages of viral replic.tion, whereas MA was ac.ive during the early stages and even showed some prophylac.ic.ac.ivity. Liquid c.romatography-mass spec.rometry(HPLc.MS) analysis revealed presenc. of flavonoids. Dc.and MA are identified as potential anti-dengue plants, ac.ive against varied stages of dengue virus replic.tion c.c.e. These results may serve as the base k.owledge for further investigation on their c.mbined treatments or integrative treatment with western medic.nes, whic. may improve the overall anti-dengue ac.ivity in future.
