Carbon Dioxide Fluxes and Concentrations in a Cotton Field in Northwestern china:Effects of Plastic Mulching and Drip Irrigation

In northwestern china, there has been a change from traditional cultivation system （TC） with no mulching and flood irrigation to a more modern cultivation system （MC） using plastic film mulching with drip irrigation. A field study was conducted to compare soil ＇C02 concentrations and soil surface COs fluxes between TC and MC systems during a cotton growing season. CO2 concentrations in the soil profile were higher in the MC system （3107-9212μL L-1） than in the TC system （1 275-8994 μL L-1） but the rate of CO2 flux was lower in the MC system. Possible reasons for this included decreased gas diffusion and higher soil moisture due to the mulching cover in the MC system, and the consumption of soil CO2 by weathering reactions. Over the whole cotton growing season, accumulated rates of CO2 flux were 300 and 394 g C m-2 for the MC and TC systems, respectively. When agricultural practices were converted from traditional cultivation to a plastic film mulching system, soil CO2 emissions could be reduced by approximately 100 g C m-2 year-1 in agricultural lands in arid and/or semi-arid areas of northern and northwestern china.

Tensile and compression properties of Zr-based bulk amorphous alloy at different temperatures

Mechanical properties of the Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk amorphous alloy at different temperatures were investigated. The compression test was carried out on a Gleebe-3200 machine at 345 and 375°C, respectively, in the supercooled liquid region. It is shown that decreasing the compressive rate and increasing temperature have a similar influence trend on the compressive behavior of the bulk amorphous alloy. Room and low temperature tensile strengths were tested on the Instron materials testing system. At low temperature, the tensile strength decreased with decreasing of the testing temperature. Hardness measurement indicated that below the glass transition temperature, the hardness decreased with increasing of the annealing temperature and duration time. It, however, increased when the annealing treatment was performed above the glass transition temperature.

Effects of Amino Acids Replacing Nitrate on Growth,Nitrate Accumulation,and Macroelement Concentrations in Pak-choi (Brassica chinensis L.)

A hydroponic experiment was carried out to determine the influence of replacing 20% of nitrate-N in nutrient solutions with 20 individual amino acids on growth, nitrate accumulation, and concentrations of nitrogen （N）, phosphorus （P）, and potassium （K） in pak-choi （Brassica chinensis L.） shoots. When 20% of nitrate-N was replaced with arginine （Arg） compared to the full nitrate treatment, pak-choi shoot fresh and dry weights increased significantly （P ≤ 0.05）, but when 20% of nitrate-N was replaced with alanine （Ala）, valine （Val）, leucine （Leu）, isoleucine （Ile）, proline （Pro）, phenylalanine （Phe）, methionine （Met）, aspartic acid （Asp）, glutamic acid （Glu）, lysine （Lys）, glycine （Gly）, serine （Ser）, threonine （Thr）, cysteine （Cys）, and tyrosine （Tyr）, shoot fresh and dry weights decreased significantly （P ≤ 0.05）. After replacing 20% of nitrate-N with asparagine （Asn） and glutamine （Gin）, shoot fresh and dry weights were unaffected. Compared to the full nitrate treatment, amino acid replacement treatments, except for Cys, Gly, histidine （His）, and Arg, significantly reduced （P ≤0.05） nitrate concentrations in plant shoots. Except for Cys, Leu, Pro, and Met, total N concentrations in plant tissues of the other amino acid treatments significantly increased （P ≤ 0.05）. Amino acids also affected total P and K concentrations, but the effects differed depending on individual amino acids. To improve pak-choi shoot quality, Gln and Asn, due to their insignificant effects on pak-choi growth, their significant reduction in nitrate concentrations, and their increase in macroelement content in plants, may be used to partially replace nitrate-N.

In order to understand the occurrence and development of Semanotus bifasciatus(Motschulsky),a borer insect of Platy-cladus orientalis in parts of northern and eastern china and to improve its prediction,the developmental threshold temperature(Ct) and effective accumulated temperature(K) of *** were determined under conditions of constant and variable *** results show that under constant temperatures the value of Ct has a range of 8.90±1.77°C and the value of K lies between 95.19±13.14 degree-day for eggs;the values for larvae are Ct = 13.26±3.06°C and the number of degree-day is K = 2,885.07±187.87 degree-day;for pupae the ranges are Ct = 8.93±2.49°C and K = 131.20±25.63 *** the condition of ambient tempera-tures,the values for eggs are Ct = 17.33±1.24°C and K = 70.79±8.99 *** is suggested that *** adults over-winter in a state of dormancy,not at a *** winter may accelerate the life cycle of *** can be used to predict an early occurrence of ***.

Effects of Bahia Grass Cover and Mulch on Runoff and Sediment Yield of Sloping Red Soil in Southern china

Rainfall,runoff (surface runoff,interflow and groundwater runoff) and soil loss from 5 m × 15 m plots were recorded for 5 years (2001-2005) in an experiment with three treatments (cover,mulch and bare ground) on sloping red soil in southern *** runoff and erosion from the Bahia grass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) cover plot (A) and mulch plot (B) during the 5 years were low,despite the occurrence of potentially erosive *** contrast,the bare plot (C) had both the highest surface runoff coefficient and the highest sediment *** were significant differences in interflow and surface runoff and no significant difference in groundwater runoff among *** runoff coefficients and duration of interflow and groundwater runoff were in the order plot B > plot A > plot *** of Bahia grass cover were excellent,indicating that the use of Bahia grass cover can be a simple and feasible practice for soil and water conservation on sloping red soil in the region.

Structural insights into the Oryza sativa cation transporters HKTs in salt tolerance

Choline acetyltransferase(ChAT)-positive neurons in neural stem cell(NSC)niches can evoke adult neurogenesis(AN)and restore impaired brain function after injury,such as acute ischemic stroke(AIS).However,the relevant mechanism by which ChAT+neurons develop in NSC niches is poorly *** RNA-seq analysis revealed that dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase 1(DDAH1),a hydrolase for asymmetric NG,NG-dimethylarginine(ADMA),regulated genes responsible for the synthesis and transportation of acetylcholine(ACh)(Chat,Slc5a7 and Slc18a3)after stroke *** dual-luciferase reporter assay further suggested that DDAH1 controlled the activity of ChAT,possibly through hypoxia-inducible factor 1α(HIF-1α).KC7F2,an inhibitor of HIF-1α,abolished DDAH1-induced ChAT expression and suppressed *** expected,DDAH1 was clinically elevated in the blood of AIS patients and was positively correlated with AIS *** comparing the results among Ddah1 general knockout(KO)mice,transgenic(TG)mice and wild-type(WT)mice,we discovered that DDAH1 upregulated the proliferation and neural differentiation of NSCs in the subgranular zone(SGZ)under ischemic *** a result,DDAH1 may promote cognitive and motor function recovery against stroke impairment,while these neuroprotective effects are dramatically suppressed by NSC conditional knockout of Ddah1 in mice.
