Palladium nanoparticles immobilized on a cross-linked imidazolium-containing polymer were evaluated as a catalyst for Suzuki carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions using water as the solvent. The nanocatalysts show good catalytic activities for aryl iodides and aryl bromides and moderate activity with aryl chloride substrates. Coupling of sterically hindered substrates could also be achieved in reasonable yields. The heterogeneous catalyst is stable, can be stored without precautions to exclude air or moisture, and can be easily recycled and reused.

In this paper, an ‘in-house＇ genetic algorithm is described and applied to an optimization problem for improving the aerodynamic performances of an aircraft wing tip through upper surface morphing. The algorithm＇s performances were studied from the convergence point of view, in accordance with design conditions. The algorithm was compared to two other optimization methods,namely the artificial bee colony and a gradient method, for two optimization objectives, and the results of the optimizations with each of the three methods were plotted on response surfaces obtained with the Monte Carlo method, to show that they were situated in the global optimum region. The optimization results for 16 wind tunnel test cases and 2 objective functions were presented. The 16 cases used for the optimizations were included in the experimental test plan for the morphing wing-tip demonstrator, and the results obtained using the displacements given by the optimizations were evaluated.

BACKGROUND The clinical presentation of gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) shows a large symptom variation also in different intensities among patients. As several studies have shown, there is a large overlap in the symptomatic spectrum between proven GERD and other disorders such as dyspepsia, functional heartburn and/or somatoform *** To prospectively evaluate the GERD patients with and without somatoform disorders before and after laparoscopic antireflux *** In a tertiary referral center for foregut surgery over a period of 3 years patients with GERD, qualifying for the indication of laparoscopic antireflux surgery, were investigated prospectively regarding their symptomatic spectrum in order to identify GERD and associated somatoform disorders. Assessment of symptoms was performed by an instrument for the evaluation of somatoform disorders[Somatoform Symptom Index(SSI) > 17]. Quality of life was evaluated by Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index(GIQLI).RESULTS In 123 patients an indication for laparoscopic antireflux surgery was established and in 43 patients further medical therapy was suggested. The portion of somatoform tendencies in the total patient population was 20.48%(34 patients).Patients with a positive SSI had a preoperative GIQLI of 77(32-111). Patients with a normal SSI had a GIQLI of 105(29-140)(P < 0.0001). In patients with GERD the quality of life could be normalized from preoperative reduced values of GIQLI102(47-140) to postoperative values of 117(44-144). In patients with GERD and somatoform disorders, the GIQLI was improved from preoperative GIQLI 75(47-111) to postoperative 95(44-122)(P < 0.0043).CONCLUSION Patients with GERD and associated somatoform disorders have significantly worse levels of quality of life. The latter patients can also benefit from laparoscopic fundoplication, however they will not reach a normal level.

ECG stress test induced atrial ischemia in a patient with old inferior myocardial infarction due to a distal coronary artery lesion

A 78-year-old man with a history of mitral valve prolapse underwent echocardiography during his cardiological check-up examination in 2011 in a symptom-free stage. Echocardiography revealed akinesis of the inferior septum and inferobasal free wall as a novel finding suggesting a distal right coronary artery (RCA) lesion (Figure 1). The systolic left ventricular function was normal. Earlier echocardiographies did not show wall motion abnormalities. The patient informed us that several months before the echocardiography he had a stronger chest pain. The stress myocardium perfusion imaging showed only fixed perfusion defects corresponding to the akinetic myocardial segments (Figure 2). The patient was symptom-free, therefore coronary angiography was not performed and secondary prevention therapy was initiated due to the history of myocardial infarction. Since the diagnosis of myocardial infarction, he was essentially symptom-free and attended yearly check-up echocardiography and ECG stress test examinations. The follow-up echocardiographies were identical to that performed in 2011 and the ECG stress tests were normal. In October 2014, the patient came to a regular out-patient check-up examination. His physical examination was unremarkable with normal heart rate and blood pressure. The echocardiography findings were unchanged. The ECG recorded before the start of the ECG treadmill stress test was also identical to the resting ECG tracing recorded in 2011, showing signs of old inferior myocardial infarction (pathological Q wave in lead III and borderline pathological Q wave in lead aVF by voltage criterion, Q wave in lead II, rSr’ complex in lead aVR) (Figure 3A). Figure 3B demon- strates the ECG tracing recorded during stage II of the ECG treadmill stress test. The most important alteration is a 0.075 mV PR segment elevation associated with a positive P wave in lead III. Ocular biomechanical measurements on post- keratoplasty corneas using a Scheimpflug-based noncontact device

AIM： To analyse ocular biomechanical properties, central corneal thickness （CCT） and intraocular pressure （lOP） in post-keratoplasty eyes, as compared to normal subjects, with a new Scheimpflug-based technology. Moreover, biomechanical data were correlated with the size and age of the donor and recipient corneas. METHODS： Measurements were conducted on 46 eyes of 46 healthy patients without any corneal pathology （age： 53.83 ±20.8y） and 30 eyes of 28 patients after penetrating keratoplasty （age： 49.43 ±21.34y）. Ten biomechanical parameters, the CCT and lOP were recorded by corneal visualization Scheimpflug technology （CorVis ST） using high-speed Scheimpflug imaging. Keratometry values were also recorded using Pentacam HR system. Scheimpflug measurements were performed after 43.41± 40.17mo （range： 11-128mo） after the keratoplasty and after 7.64±2.34mo （range： 5-14mo） of suture removal. RESULTS： Regarding the device-specific biomechanical parameters, the highest concavity time and radius values showed a significant decrease between these two groups （P=0.01 and P 〈0.001）. None of other biomechanical parameters disclosed a significant difference. The CCT showed a significant difference between post keratoplasty eyes as compared to normal subjects （P= 0.003） using the CorVis ST device. The lOP was within the normal range in both groups （P=0.84）. There were no significant relationships between the keratometric data, the size of the donor and recipient, age of the donor and recipient and biomechanical properties obtained by CorVis ST. CONCLUSION： The ocular biomechanics remain stable after penetrating keratoplasty according to the CorVis ST measurements. Only two from the ten device-specific parameters have importance in the follow-up period after penetrating keratoplasty.

Background： Synthetic microbial consortia are conglomerations of genetically engineered microbes programmed to cooperatively bring about population-level phenotypes. By coordinating their activity, the constituent strains can display emergent behaviors that are difficult to engineer into isogenic populations. To do so, strains are engineered to communicate with one another through intercellular signaling pathways that depend on cell density. Methods： Here, we used computational modeling to examine how the behavior of synthetic microbial consortia results from the interplay between population dynamics governed by cell growth and internal transcriptional dynamics governed by cell-ceil signaling. Specifically, we examined a synthetic microbial consortium in which two strains each produce signals that down-regulate transcription in the other. Within a single strain this regulatory topology is called a ＂co-repressive toggle switch＂ and can lead to bistability. Results： We found that in co-repressive synthetic microbial consortia the existence and stability of different states depend on population-level dynamics. As the two strains passively compete for space within the colony, their relative fractions fluctuate and thus alter the strengths of intercellular signals. These fluctuations drive the consortium to alternative equilibria. Additionally, if the growth rates of the strains depend on their transcriptional states, an additional feedback loop is created that can generate oscillations. Conclusions： Our findings demonstrate that the dynamics of microbial consortia cannot be predicted from their regulatory topologies alone, but are also determined by interactions between the strains. Therefore, when designing synthetic microbial consortia that use intercellular signaling, one must account for growth variations caused by the production of protein.
