Impact of cattle density on the structure and natural regeneration of a turkey oak stand on an agrosilvopastoral farm in central Italy

On an agrosilvopastoral farm in central Italy where Maremmana cattle graze in Turkey oak forests,we evaluated the impact of different livestock densities on stand structure,tree diversity and natural regeneration in four types of grazed areas based on the grazing regime adopted:calf-grazed,high-intensity-grazed,low-intensity-grazed,ungrazed control.For each area,we set up three permanent circular plots(radius of 15 m)to survey the structural and dasometric characteristics of the overstorey,understorey,and regeneration layer.The results showed that grazing negatively affected the complexity of the forest structure and its potential to regenerate and maintain a high level of biodiversity.The differences in stand structure observed between the grazing areas were closely related to livestock density.The most sensitive components of the system were the understorey and the regeneration layers.Contrarily,the current grazing management did not affect the dominant tree structure or its composition.Our findings identified medium-term monitoring and regeneration management as the two significant aspects to consider when assessing sustainable livestock.New forests can be established by excluding graz-ing for about 20–25 years.

Free amino acid(FAA)is the important component of vinegar that infl uences quality perception and consumer acceptance.FAA is one of the major metabolites produced by microorganisms;however,the microbial metabolic network on FAA biosynthesis remains unclear.Through metagenomic analysis,this work aimed to elucidate the roles of microbes in FAA biosynthesis during Monascus rice vinegar fermentation.Taxonomic profiles from functional analyses showed 14 dominant genera with high contributions to the metabolism pathways.The metabolic network for FAA biosynthesis was then constructed,and the microbial distribution in different metabolic pathways was illuminated.The results revealed that 5 functional genera were closely involved in FAA biosynthesis.This study illuminated the metabolic roles of microorganisms in FAA biosynthesis and provided crucial insights into the functional attributes of microbiota in vinegar fermentation.

Common psychiatric disorders(CPDs)and depression contribute significantly to the global epidemic of type 2 diabetes(T2D).We postulated a possible pathophysiological mechanism that through Bridge-Symptoms present in depression and CPDs,promotes the establishment of emotional eating,activation of the reward system,onset of overweight and obesity and,ultimately the increased risk of developing T2D.The plausibility of the proposed pathophysiological mechanism is supported by the mechanism of action of drugs such as naltrexonebupropion currently approved for the treatment of both obesity/overweight with T2D and as separate active pharmaceutical ingredients in drug addiction,but also from initial evidence that is emerging regarding glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists that appear to be effective in the treatment of drug addiction.We hope that our hypothesis may be useful in interpreting the higher prevalence of CPDs and depression in patients with T2D compared with the general population and may help refine the integrated psychiatric-diabetic therapy approach to improve the treatment and or remission of T2D.

The gut microbiota works in unison with the host,promoting its health.In particular,it has been shown to exert protective,metabolic and structural functions.Recent evidence has revealed the influence of the gut microbiota on other organs such as the central nervous system,cardiovascular and the endocrine-metabolic systems and the digestive system.The study of the gut microbiota is outlining new and broader frontiers every day and holds enormous innovation potential for the medical and pharmaceutical fields.Prevention and treatment of specific women’s diseases involves the need to deepen the function of the gut as a junction organ where certain positive bacteria can be very beneficial to health.The gut microbiota is unique and dynamic at the same time,subject to external factors that can change it,and is capable of modulating itself at different stages of a woman’s life,playing an important role that arises from the intertwining of biological mechanisms between the microbiota and the female genital system.The gut microbiota could play a key role in personalized medicine.

Alcohol use disorder is a complex and heterogeneous phenomenon that can be studied from several points of view by focusing on its different components.Alcohol is a hepatotoxin whose metabolism creates profound alterations within the hepatocyte.The liver is the central organ in the metabolism of alcohol,a process that also involves other organs and tissues such as the brain,heart and muscles,but the most relevant organ is the liver.The anatomopathological alterations in the liver associated with the prolonged use of alcohol range from the simple accumulation of neutral fats in the hepatocytes,to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.Alcohol abuse frequently leads to liver disease such as steatosis,steatohepatitis,fibrosis,cirrhosis,and tumors.Following the spread of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),there was an increase in alcohol consumption,probably linked to the months of lockdown and smart working.It is known that social isolation leads to a considerable increase in stress,and it is also recognized that high levels of stress can result in an increase in alcohol intake.Cirrhotic patients or subjects with liver cancer are immunocompromised,so they may be more exposed to COVID-19 infection with a worse prognosis.This review focuses on the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has made the emergence of alcohol-induced liver damage a major medical and social problem.

The long-term management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is still a matter of debate,and no clear guidelines have been issued.In clinical practice,gastroenterologists often have to deal with patients in prolonged remission after immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive therapies.When planning an exit strategy for drug withdrawal,the risk of disease relapse must be balanced against the risk of drug-related adverse events and healthcare costs.Furthermore,there is still a dearth of data on the withdrawal of novel biologics,such as the anti-α4β7 integrin antibody(vedolizumab)and anti-IL12/23 antibody(ustekinumab),as well as the small molecule tofacitinib.Models for estimating the risk of disease relapse and the efficacy of retreatment should be evaluated according to the patient's age and IBD phenotype.These models should guide clinicians in programming a temporary drug withdrawal after discussing realistic outcomes with the patient.This would shift the paradigm from an exit strategy to a holiday strategy.

Reinforced concrete （r.c.） framed buildings designed in compliance with inadequate seismic classifi- cations and code provisions present in many cases a high vulnerability and need to be retrofitted. To this end, the insertion of a base isolation system allows a considerable reduction of the seismic loads transmitted to the super- structure. However, strong near-fault ground motions, which are characterised by long-duration horizontal pulses, may amplify the inelastic response of the superstructure and induce a failure of the isolation system. The above considerations point out the importance of checking the effectiveness of different isolation systems for retrofitting a r.c. framed structure. For this purpose, a numerical inves- tigation is carried out with reference to a six-storey r.c. framed building, which, primarily designed （as to be a fixed-base one） in compliance with the previous Italian code （DM96） for a medium-risk seismic zone, has to be retrofitted by insertion of an isolation system at the base for attaining performance levels imposed by the current Italian code （NTC08） in a high-risk seismic zone. Besides the （fixed-base） original structure, three cases of base isolation are studied： elastomeric bearings acting alone （e.g. HDLRBs）; in-parallel combination of elastomeric and friction bearings （e.g. high-damping-laminated-rubber beatings, HDLRBs and steel-PTFE sliding bearings, SBs）; friction bearings acting alone （e.g. friction pendulum bearings, FPBs）. The nonlinear analysis of the fixed-base and base-isolated structures subjected to horizontal com- ponents of near-fault ground motions is performed for checking plastic conditions at the potential critical （end） sections of the girders and columns as well as critical conditions of the isolation systems. Unexpected high val- ues of ductility demand are highlighted at the lower floors of all base-isolated structures, while re-centring problems of the base isolation systems under near-fault earthquakes are expected in case of friction beatings acting

The design provisions of current seismic codes are generally not very accurate for assessing effects of near-fault ground motions on reinforced concrete （r.c.） spatial frames, because only far-fault ground motions are considered in the seismic codes. Strong near-fault earth- quakes are characterized by long-duration （horizontal） pulses and high values of the ratio ~PgA of the peak value of the vertical acceleration, PgAv, to the analogous value of the horizontal acceleration, PgAH, which can become critical for girders and columns. In this work, six- and twelve-storey r.c. spatial frames are designed according to the provisions of the Italian seismic code, considering the horizontal seismic loads acting （besides the gravity loads） alone or in combination with the vertical ones. The non- linear seismic analysis of the test structures is performed using a step-by-step procedure based on a two-parameter implicit integration scheme and an initial stress-like itera- tive procedure. A lumped plasticity model based on the Haar-K^n~m principle is adopted to model the inelastic behaviour of the frame members. For the numerical investigation, five near-fault ground motions with high values of the acceleration ratio C^p6A are considered. Moreover, following recent seismological studies, which allow the extraction of the largest （horizontal） pulse from a near-fault ground motion, five pulse-type （horizontal） ground motions are selected by comparing the original ground motion with the residual motion after the pulse has been extracted. The results of the nonlinear dynamic analysis carried out on the test structures highlighted thathorizontal and vertical components of near-fault ground motions may require additional consideration in the seis- mic codes.

gastroparesis is a chronic disease of the stomach that causes a delayed gastric emptying,without the presence of a stenosis.For 30 years the authors identified pylorospasm as one of the most important pathophysiological mechanisms determining gastroparesis.Studies with EndoFLIP,a device that assesses pyloric distensibility,increased the knowledge about pylorospasm.Based on this data,several pyloric-targeted therapies were developed to treat refractory gastroparesis:Surgical pyloroplasty and endoscopic approach,such as pyloric injection of botulinum and pyloric stenting.Notwithstanding,the success of most of these techniques is still not complete.In 2013,the first human gastric per-oral endoscopic myotomy(gPOEM)was performed.It was inspired by the POEM technique,with a similar dissection method,that allows pyloromyotomy.Therapeutical results of gPOEM are similar to surgical approach in term of clinical success,adverse events and post-surgical pain.In the last 8 years gPOEM has gained the attention of the scientific community,as a minimally invasive technique with high rate of clinical success,quickly prevailing as a promising therapy for gastroparesis.Not surprisingly,in referral centers,its technical success rate is 100%.One of the main goals of recent studies is to identify those patients that will respond better to the therapies targeted on pylorus and to choose the better approach for each patient.
