Mating.preferences can show extreme variation within and among.individuals even when sensory inputs are conserved. This variation is a result of chang.s associated with evaluative mechanisms that assig. positive, neutral, or neg.tive hedonic value to stimuli-that is, label them as attractive, uninteresting. or unattractive. There is widespread behavioral evidence for differences in g.nes, environmental cues, or social experience leading.to marked chang.s in the hedonic value of stimuli. Evaluation is accomplished throug. an array of mechanisms that are readily modifiable throug. g.netic chang.s or environmental inputs, and that may often result in the rapid acquisition or loss of behavioral preferences. Reversals in preference arising.from "flips" in hedonic value may be quite common. Incorporating.such discontinuous chang.s into models of preference evolution may illuminate our understanding.of processes like trait diversification, sexual conflict, and sympatric speciation.

Rapid technical advances in the field of computeropened new avenues in animal behavior research.animation （CA） and virtual reality （VR） haveAnimated stimuli are powerful tools as theyoffer standardization, repeatability, and complete control over the stimulus presented, thereby＂reducing. and ＂replacing. the animals used, and ＂refining. the experimental desig. in line withthe 3Rs. However, appropriate use of these technolog.es raises conceptual and technical questions.In this review, we offer g.idelines for common technical and conceptual considerations related tothe use of animated stimuli in animal behavior research. Following.the steps required to create ananimated stimulus, we discuss （I） the creation, （11） the presentation, and （111） the validation of CAsand VRs. Althoug. our review is g.ared toward computer-g.aphically desig.ed stimuli, consider-ations on presentation and validation also apply to video playbacks. CA and VR allow both new be-havioral questions to be addressed and existing.questions to be addressed in new ways, thus weexpect a rich future for these methods in both ultimate and proximate studies of animal behavior.

Dear Editor The use of sequence-specific nucleases for plant g.nomic DNA mutag.nesis is an exciting.and rapidly developing.tech- nolog. （Voytas and Merchant, 2013; Baltes and Voytas, 2014）. To date, most mutated plants have been recovered from transg.nic plants stably expressing.nucleases. However, transient nuclease delivery by plant DNA- and RNA-based viral vectors followed by reg.neration of plantlets from modi- fied tissues has emerg.d as an alternative, efficient strateg. in some plant species （Marton et al., 2010; Baltes et al., 2014）. Delivery of nucleases by plant RNA viruses is particularly attractive because they typically do not integ.ate into the plant g.nome, and therefore the mutated plants are not classified as transg.nic （Marton et al., 2013; Voytas and g.o, 2014）.

The aim of this prospective observational study was to compare a bedside test with the reference laboratory method in routine postnatal g.ucose monitoring. Term newborns with increased risk or clinical sig.s of hypog.ycemia were screened with a bedside test. In case of a g.ucose value below 2.25 mmoll, a second blood sample was taken and a duplicate g.ucose measurement done in the laboratory using.a bedside test (Accutrend sensor) and the reference laboratorymethod (hexokinase method) at the same time and from the same sample. From 110 term newborns, 122 blood samples were obtained for duplicate measurements (median 1.69 mmoll, SD 0.45 mmoll). Of these 122, Accutrend correctly identified 97%as being.ll by the laboratory method. A Bland-Altman plot revealed a mean underestimation of the Accutrend of only-0.09 mmoll. However, due to hig. scattering. the maximal over-and underestimation was 0.89 and 1.39 mmoll, respectively. Only 75%of the results from the Accutrend were within ±20%of the result of the laboratory method. If the cutoff for low g.ucose concentrations was set 0.6 mmoll hig.er for the bedside test as compared to the laboratory method, all patients except one would have been correctly identified as hypog.ycemic. Conclusion: When using.the Accutrend sensor, sing.e infants with even marked hypog.ycemia mig.t be missed. Some delay in receiving.accurate measurements mig.t be more helpful for clinical decisions and long.term outcome than immediate but potentially misleading.results.

Front-of-packag.(FOP)nutrition labelling.schemes were developed to improve consumer’s comprehension about the food nutrients associated with non-communicable diseases(NCDs).Several FOPs have already been developed,and Brazil is in the process of evaluating.a scheme to introduce in the products.The aim of this study was to investig.te the impact of TlS,the scheme proposed by the food industry,on the product healthfulness perception.A study with 141 participants was carried out.A conjoint task was desig.ed considering.three categ.ries and levels:types of dairy products(lig.t yog.rt,prato cheese,and chocolate flavoured milk),Traffic lig.t System(yes vs.no)and brand(well-known vs.unknown).The effect of TlS on perceived healthfulness was evaluated using.a 9-point scales(1:not healthy;9:very healthy).Results showed that the inclusion of TlS did not influence the perceived healthfulness of the products by consumers,even among.consumers with hig.er interest in healthy eating.These finding. sug.est that the proposal supported by the food industry does not seem to be the most appropriate,being.recommended the development of further studies to compare the efficacy of TlS and other FOP schemes.

Head and neck cancers become a severe threat to human’s health nowadays and represent the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Surg.ry remains the first-line choice for head and neck cancer patients. limited resectable tissue mass and complicated anatomy structures in the head and neck reg.on put the surg.ons in a dilemma between the extensive resection and a better quality of life for the patients. Early diag.osis and treatment of the pre-malig.ancies, as well as real-time in vivo detection of surg.cal marg.ns during.en bloc resection, could be leverag.d to minimize the resection of normal tissues. With the understanding.of the head and neck oncolog., recent advances in optical hardware and reag.nts have provided unique opportunities for real-time pre-malig.ancies and cancer imag.ng.in the clinic or operating.room. Optical imag.ng.in the head and neck has been reported using.autofluorescence imag.ng. targ.ted fluorescence imag.ng. hig.-resolution microendoscopy, narrow band imag.ng.and the Raman spectroscopy. In this study, we reviewed the basic theories and clinical applications of optical imag.ng.for the diag.osis and treatment in the field of head and neck oncolog. with the g.al of identifying.limitations and facilitating.future advancements in the field.

Context: Certificate of need reg.lations were enacted to control health care costs by limiting.unnecessary expansion of services. While many states have repealed certificate of need reg.lations in recent years, few analyses have examined relationships between certificate of need reg.lations and outcomes of care. Objective: To compare rates of coronary revascularization and mortality after acute myocardial infarction in states with and without certificate of need reg.lations. Desig., Setting. and Participants: Retrospective cohort study of 1 139 792 Medicare beneficiaries ag.d 68 years or older with AMI who were admitted to 4587 US hospitals during.2000-2003. Main Outcome Measures: Thirty-day risk-adjusted rates of coronary revascularization with either coronary artery bypass g.aft surg.ry or percutaneous coronary intervention and 30-day all-cause mortality. Results: The 624 421 patients in states with certificate of need reg.lations were less likely to be admitted to hospitals with coronary revascularization services(321 573[51.5%] vs 323 695[62.8%]; Pg. revascularization at the admitting.hospital(163 120[26.1%] vs 163 877[31.8%]; Plikely to underg. revascularization at a transfer hospital(73 379[11.7%] vs 45 907[8.9%]; Pg.for demog.aphic and clinical risk factors, patients in states with hig.ly and moderately string.nt certificate of need reg.lations, respectively, were less likely to underg. revascularization within the first 2 days(adjusted hazard ratios, 0.68; 95%confidence interval[CI], 0.54-0.87; P=.002 and 0.80; 95%CI, 0.71-0.90; Plative to patients in states without certificates of need, althoug. no differences in the likelihood of revascularization were observed during.days 3 throug. 30.
