Coffee Orchard Response to Enhanced Efficiency Phosphate Fertilizer

Phosphorus (P) plays a crucial role in plant growth by aiding in the development of strong roots, promoting flower and fruit formation, and aiding in photosynthesis. studies to improve P fertilizers efficiency in coffee orchards are necessary due to the need for better efficiency and the lack of information on enhanced efficiency P fertilizers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of MAP coated with anionic polymers (Policote) on coffee orchard development. A coffee trial was carried out in a randomized block design with three replications. The treatments, applied at coffee planting, were arranged in an incomplete factorial (2 × 4) + 1, using two P sources (MAP and Policote coated MAP), four P rates (40, 80, 120, and 160 g Psub>2sub>Osub>5sub> plantsup>-1sup>) and control (without application of P fertilizer). Plant height was evaluated in the 2016/2017, 2017/2018, and 2018/2019 seasons, while coffee bean maturation, yield, and agronomic P efficiency use were evaluated in the last two seasons. P fertilization did not affect coffee bean maturation and increased coffee yield in 31-month-old plants when differences among P sources and rates were observed. Using Policote-coated P fertilizer resulted in higher yields at the same P rate, as well as similar yields at a lower P rate, compared to conventional fertilizer. Policote-coated P fertilizer can be used as an enhanced efficiency fertilizer and is an efficient way to deliver required P to plants. The target for reducing farm investment, increasing agricultural profits, preserving phosphatic rock reserves, and avoiding the overuse of phosphate fertilizer could be realized through the rational use of enhanced efficiency fertilizers.

Dengue is an important emerging viruses, posing a threat to one-third of the global human population. In 2002, the introduction of DENV-3 in the state of Bahia produced massive epidemic (about 35,000 cases detected) and the first cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever. To understand the nature of the virus circulating at Bahia, E/Ns1 sequence was determined for 31 DENV viruses isolated in Bahia during the 2006 and 2007 transmission season, from patients presenting with different degrees of severity. The carboxi-terminal region of the E gene (220 nt) of 31 viruses, isolated from dengue patients with clinical diagnosis of dengue infection were used to determine the genetic variability of dengue 2 (DENV-2) and dengue 3 (DENV-3). sequence data were used in phylogenetic comparisons with global samples of DENV-2 and DENV-3. DENV-2 sample grouped in the south East Indian genotype, while DENV-3 samples were grouped within Indian genotype. This study is the first report on Bahia isolates during two transmission seasons. Our data confirms reports from other parts of Brazil and different countries showing the DENV-3 (geno-type III) strains circulating in the Americas are closely related, and cluster within the genotype that has been associated with DHF epidemics in different conti-nents.

Microbial Fermentation Patterns, Diarrhea Incidence, and Performance in Weaned Piglets Fed a Low Protein Diet supplemented with Probiotics

To evaluate the effects of dietary protein levels and probiotic supplementation on microbial intestinal fermentation, diarrhea incidence, and performance in weaned piglets, 162 piglets were randomly assigned to three treatments: high-protein diet (20%), with antibiotics (HPa);high-protein diet (20%), without antibiotics (HP);and low-protein diet, without antibiotics but with probiotics (LPpb). Piglets and feed were weighed weekly to calculate the average daily gain (ADg), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and gain: feed ratio (g:F). Four piglets per treatment were killed on day 21 postweaning to collect ileal and colon digesta for measurement of short-chain fatty acids (sCFAs), branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs), lactic acid (LA), and ammonia (AM). In the digesta collected from the ileum and colon, piglets fed the HPa diet had the lowest concentration of volatile fatty acids. Additionally, the HP diet produced the highest concentration of BCFAs, while the LPpb diet produced moreacetic, propionic, and butyric acids than the HPa and HP diets. Piglets fed the HP diet had higher incidence and severity of diarrhea than piglets fed LPpb and HPa diets, and similar values were observed between these two groups. The second week postweaning was the most critical for diarrhea measurements;during the second week, animals had higher incidence and severity of diarrhea. Piglets fed the HPa and LPpb diets had similar ADgs, while those fed the HP diet had the poorest ADg. similar results were observed with ADFI and g:F. A low-protein diet supplemented with probiotics changed the fermentation profile, reducing toxic metabolites, promoting gut health, decreasing the incidence and severity of postweaning diarrhea, and improving the performance of piglets.

Role of endothelium on the abnormal Angiotensin-mediated vascular functions in epileptic rats

Epidemiological studies have found that the risk for cardiovascular disease is increased in patients with epilepsy. The Renin Angiontensin system (RAs), an important player in vascular tone control, is also involved in many neurological disorders, including seizures and epilepsy. Although it has been reported that Angiotensin II (Ang II) release and Angiotensin receptors expression are altered in many cerebral areas in patients/animal models with neurological disorders, there are no data on the vascular function. We evaluated Ang I and Ang II-mediated vascular responses and to correlate their contractile responses to the pres- ence of endothelium and the protein levels of components of the RAs (AT1, AT2, Mas and ACE) in aorta isolated from genetically epileptic rats (WAR strain). The major finding was that the vascular contractile response induced by Ang I and Ang II is endothelium-dependent. Ang II induced contractions in aortas from Wistar rats either with intact endothelium (E+) (1.16 ± 0.04 g, n = 6) and endothelium-denuded (E-) (1.24 ± 0.04 g, n = 6). Maximum contractile response (ME) induced by Ang I was lower in Wistar E+ (0.45 ± 0.03 g, n = 6) compared with Wistar E- (1.13 ± 0.08 g, n = 6). Ang I and Ang II failed to induce contraction in WAR E+, whereas the ME induced by Ang I in WAR E- was lower (0.52 ± 0.04 g, n = 11) than in the Wistar. ME induced by Ang II in aortas from WAR was also lower (0.40 ± 0.03 g, n = 11) compared with Wistar. AT1 receptor expression in both E+ WAR and Wistar was lower than in both E- WAR and Wistar. AT2 and Mas receptor expression was higher in Wistar E- and E+ as compared to WAR E- and E+. ACE expression was higher in both E+ WAR and Wistar, but it was lower in both E- WAR and Wistar. Endothelium impairs the contractile response induced by Angiotensin in WAR, suggesting that endothelial relaxing factors play important role on the aorta contraction.

One-step synthesis and Characterization of a Nanocomposite Based on Carbon Nanotubes/Aluminum and Its Reinforcement Effect on the Metal Matrix

The nanocomposite based on carbon nanotubes/aluminum (CNT/Al) was one-step prepared by the DC arc discharge method under an argon/acetone mixed atmosphere. synthesis was performed by arc plasma on a pure graphite rod, filled by aluminum powder as an anode and aluminum plate as a cathode. Discharge conditions of 85 A and 20 V were used at a pressure range of 375 to 750 Torr. The CNT/Al was characterized by scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive spectroscopy; Transmission Electron Microscopy; Laser Diffraction Particle size Analysis; X-Ray Diffraction; Raman spectroscopy; Thermogravimetric Analysis; and, its reinforcement effect of the CNTs on the aluminum matrix was measured by Vickers microhardness test. This nanocomposite shows agglomerates of multiwalled carbon nanotubes filled with Al4C3 and blended with aluminum particles; moreover, in the nanocomposites was found a hardness increase of 40% for nanocomposites with 1.0 wt.% of CNT/Al.

Involvement of TLR2 and TLR4,Chlamydophila pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae in adventitial inflammation of aortic atherosclerotic aneurysm

Aortic atherosclerotic aneurysm (AAA) is associated with adventitial inflammation where infection is suggested to have a role. Co-infection with Chlamydophila pneumoniae (Cp) and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) was linked with coronary plaque rupture, in association with vessel dilatation and adventitial inflammation. Pathogens are recognized by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) development of the inflammatory process. Objective: Here, we studied whether co-infection by Cp and Mp was involved in the increased inflammation present in AAA and if it could be associated with deficient expression of TLRs. We compared human samples of AAA with non-dilated human aortic atherosclerotic lesions, regarding the amount of Cp and Mp antigens, and expression of TLR2 and TLR4. Methods: Two groups of aorta fragments were analyzed: g1 (n = 13) moderate atherosclerosis and g2 (n = 14) AAA samples, through immunohisto-chemistry and in situ hybridization methods. Results: Mp and Cp antigens in intima/medial layer were greater in g2 than g1, with no difference in adventitia. TLR2 and TLR4 were higher in g2 than g1 adventitia fat. There was a correlation between Mp versus TLR2 and of TLR4 in intima/medial layer and in adventitia of g1, but there was a lack of correlation in g2. In Cp adventitia, the correlation in g1 was high with TLR2 but not with TLR4, and in g2 the correlation was positive for both TLRs. Conclusion: This study favors the concept that symbiotic co-infection by Cp and Mp participates in the pathogenesis of AAA. It also emphasizes that adventitial fat is the initial site for colonization of these bacteria that probably reach the tissue through vasa vasorum. An exacerbated immune reaction is not efficient to control the infection that reaches and proliferates in high levels at the medial and intimal layer, contributing to the development of vessel dilatation.
