Tracking the Ti^(4+)substitution in phlogopite by spectroscopic imaging:A tool for unravelling the growth of micas at HP-HT conditions

Phlogopite solid-solutions have a wide pressure-temperature(P-T)stability field and are ubiquitous in a wide variety of geological settings,from deep lithosphere magmatic environments to upper crust metamorphic *** composition represents therefore a valuable physical-chemical archive and may provide important information regarding its crystallization and the petrogenesis of the *** this paper we examine the phlogopite phenocrysts from the well-known Fort Regent mica-bearing lamprophyre minette from ***(Island of Jersey,UK).Phlogopite phenocrystals from lamprophyres generally show normal-step and continuous compositional zoning,however those from the Fort Regent minette show a peculiar texture characterized by dark brown high-Ti(average TiO_(2)≈8.5 wt.%)cores enveloped by euhedral low-to mid-amplitude zonation due to oscillatory contents in Ti,Fe and ***-barometry modelling based on biotite-only composition yields relatively high P-T estimates(T≈970±54℃at P≈0.73±0.13 gPa)for cores whereas lower values(T≈790±54℃at P≈0.29±0.13 gPa)are obtained for the outer *** temperatures(T≈1075±54℃)but extremely high and anomalous pressure values(P≈1.82±0.13 gPa)are obtained for the yellowish inner *** combination of electron micro probe(EMP)analysis and single-crystal infra-red(FTIR)imaging in the OH-stretching region shows that the exceptional and oscillatory Ti contents are due to the Ti-vacancy substitution,typical of crystallization and growth processes of HP/HT *** imaging provides additional insight for this process,confirming the dominant dioctahedral nature for the Ti-Fe-rich cores and outer *** of thermobaric estimates obtained from the phlogopite compositiononly model,based on the fine-scale compositional evolution,shows that pressure-temperature values from low-Ti high-Mg domains should be carefully evaluated because the substitution mechanisms during the dark mica growth are not univocal

The formation and growth mechanisms of Mid-Ocean Ridges(MOR)are relatively well known,whereas those of back-arc spreading ridges are comparatively less known because geophysical,geochemical,and morphological data are scarce and of low *** we present a high-resolution bathymetry of the Marsili Seamount(MS;1 Ma-3 ka),which represents the inflated spreading ridge of the 2 Ma old Marsili back-arc basin associated to the subduction of the Ionian Sea below the Calabrian Arc and Tyrrhenian *** is 70 km long,30 km wide,and its height reaches about 3000 m from surrounding *** new digital bathymetric model has a 5 m grid cell size resolution and covers the MS bathymetry from-1670 mbsl to the top at-491 *** conduct morphometric and morphological analyses of the bathymetry and recognize landforms due to volcanic,tectonic,hydrothermal and gravity *** consists of volcanoes related to fissural and central-type activity,this latter located at the northern and southern tips of the main dike *** swarms represent the surface expression of different ridge segments whose strikes are controlled by the larger scale back-arc spreading processes and by the local occurrence of an active hydrothermal *** latter develops in a flat area between two partly overlapping ridge segments where historical volcanism and extensional processes *** ridges represent the embryonic stage of the formation of transform-like *** volcanoes,the northern of which is characterized by a caldera,form at the tips of MS because the decrease in width of the major volcanic fissures promotes vent localization associated with the formation of sill-like reservoirs from which central-type vents may *** processes affecting the MS flanks are due to shallow seafloor *** collapses affecting the northernmost central-type polygenic volcano must be included in the evaluation of the hazard related to potential *** dipping faul

Lutetium β-tricalcium phosphate Ca9Lu（PO4）7 was synthesized by solid-state reaction at 1200 ℃, and investigated by means of a combination of scanning electron microscopy （SEM） equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （EDS）, X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） and Raman spectroscopies. SEM morphological analysis reveals the presence of sub spherical and prismatic micro crystalline aggregates, while EDS semi-quantitative analysis confirms the nominal Lu/Ca compo- sition. The unit cell and the space group were determined by X-ray powder diffraction data showing that the compound crystallizes in the rhombohedral R3c wfiitlockite-type structure, with unit cell constants a - b 1.04164（1） nm, c 3.7302（1） nm and cell volume V 3.5051（1） nm^3. The investigation was completed with the structural refinement by the Rietveld method, and discussion of the distribution of Lu within cationic sites according to the results of the Rietveld refinement. The FIIR and Raman spectra, correlated to isostructural rare earth phosphates from literature, show slight band shifts of the phosphate modes correlated to the evolving size of the rare earth elements.

Two-dimensional near-infrared photonic crystal fabrication by generation of void channels in solid resin

Two-dimensional (2D) triangular void channel photonic crystals with different lattice constants stacked in two different directions were fabricated by using femtosecond laser micro-explosion in solid polymer material. Fundamental and higher-order stop gaps were observed both in the infrared transmission and reflection spectra. There is an approximately linear relationship between the gap position and the lattice constant. The suppression of the fundamental gap is as high as 70% for 24-layer structures stacked in the T-M direction.

Human prion-like proteins often correspond to nucleic acid binding proteins,displaying both globular domains and long intrinsically disordered regions(IDRs)(Harrison and Shorter,2017).Their IDRs are of low complexity and resemble in amino acid composition to the disordered yeast prion domains,being usually enriched in gln and Asn residues and depleted in hydrophobic and charged ***,these sequence stretches are named prion-like domains(PrLDs).Prion-like proteins can aggregate into amyloid fibrils,which can accommodate incoming protein monomers,propagating thus the polymeric fold,both processes being。

A comparative study on the alternating mesophilic and thermophilic two-stage anaerobic digestion of food waste

An alternating mesophilic and thermophilic two stage anaerobic digestion （AD） process was conducted. The temperature of the acidogenic （A） and methanogenic （M） reactors was controlled as follows： System 1 （S1） mesophilic A-mesophilic M; （S2） mesophilic A-thermophilic M; and （S3） thermophilic A-mesophilic M. Initially, the AD reactor was acclimatized and inoculated with digester sludge. Food waste was added with the soluble chemical oxygen demand （SCOD） concentrations of 41.4-47.0 g/L and volatile fatty acids of 2.0-3.2 g/L. Based on the results, the highest total chemical oxygen demand removal （86.6%） was recorded in S2 while S3 exhibited the highest SCOD removal （96.6%）. Comparing S1 with S2, total solids removal increased by 0.5%;S3 on the other hand decreased by 0.1% as compared to S1. However, volatile solids （VS） removal in S1, S2, and S3 was 78.5%, 81.7%, and 79.2%, respectively. S2 also exhibited the highest CH4 content, yield, and production rate of 70.7%, 0.44 L CH4/g VSadded, and 1.23 L CH4/（***）, respectively. Bacterial community structure revealed that the richness, diversity, evenness, and dominance of S2 were high except for the archaeal community. The terminal restriction fragments dendrogram also revealed that the microbial community of the acidogenic and methanogenic reactors in S2 was distinct. Therefore, S2 was the best among the systems for the operation of two-stage AD of food waste in terms of CH4 production, nutrient removal, and microbial community structure.

Infuence of Process Parameters on the RF Sputtered gaP Thin Films

In this work, gallium phosphide thin films were deposited on glass substrates by radio frequency （RF） magnetron sputtering technique under different depositions conditions. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed a diversity of states： from amorphous in the films deposited at 175 ~C to a nearly stoichiometric and polycrystalline films, exhibiting cubic phase with preferred orientation along （220）, in the films deposited at temperatures higher than 250 ~C. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that all films were uniform with a smooth surface, while the energy-dispersive spectroscopy （EDS） analysis showed that there was a visible dependence on the ga/P ratio in the deposition conditions and confirmed that a residual ga metallic phase was presented in the surface of all the films. The Raman analysis showed the structural evolution of the gaP films was strongly dependent on the deposition conditions. The conductivity of the films was slightly dependent on the argon pressure and the rf power, but strongly dependent on the deposition temperature, mainly above 200 ~C. The optical transmission and absorption analyses of the gaP films revealed an indirect band gap of ~ 1.70 eV in the films deposited at temperatures less than 200 ~C, which transited to a band gap of 2.26 eV as the deposition temperature was close to 300 ~C.

Molecular mechMolecular mechanism of glucocorticoid resistance in inflammatory bowel disease

Natural and synthetic glucocorticoids (gCs) are widely employed in a number of inflammatory, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases, and, despite the introduction of novel therapies, remain the first-line treatment for inducing remission in moderate to severe active Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Despite their extensive therapeutic use and the proven effectiveness, considerable clinical evidence of wide inter-individual differences in gC efficacy among patients has been reported, in particular when these agents are used in inflammatory diseases. In recent years, a detailed knowledge of the gC mechanism of action and of the genetic variants affecting gC activity at the molecular level has arisen from several studies. gCs interact with their cytoplasmic receptor, and are able to repress inflammatory gene expression through several distinct mechanisms. The glucocorticoid receptor (gR) is therefore crucial for the effects of these agents: mutations in the gR gene (NR3C1, nuclear receptor subfamily 3, group C, member 1) are the primary cause of a rare, inherited form of gC resistance; in addition, several polymorphisms of this gene have been described and associated with gC response and ***, the gR is not self-standing in the cell and the receptor-mediated functions are the result of a complex interplay of gR and many other cellular partners. The latter comprise several chaperonins of the large cooperative hetero-oligomeric complex that binds the hormonefree gR in the cytosol, and several factors involved in the transcriptional machinery and chromatin remodeling, that are critical for the hormonal control of target genes transcription in the nucleus. Furthermore, variants in the principal effectors of gCs (e.g. cytokines and their regulators) have also to be taken into account for a comprehensive evaluation of the variability in gC response. Analysing the effect of stand density and site conditions on structure and growth of oak species using Nelder trials along an environmental gradient:experimental design,evaluation methods,and results

Background: Most current approaches in forest science and practice require information about structure and growth of individual trees rather than- or in addition to- sum and mean values of growth and yield at forest stand level as provided by classic experimental designs. By inventing the wheel design, Nelder provided the possibility to turn to the individual tree as basic information unit. Such trials provide valuable insights into the dependency of growth on stand density at particular ***: Here, we present an extension of the original design and evaluation by Nelder.(i) We established Nelder wheels along an environmental gradient through Europe in atlantic climate in Belgium and germany, Mediterranean climate in Italy, continental climate in Hungary as well as on high land climate in Mexico. Such disjunct Nelder wheels along an environmental gradient can be regarded and analysed as a two-factor design with the factors of site condition and stand density.(ii) We present an advanced statistical approach to evaluate density dependent growth dynamics of trees planted in form of the Nelder design, which considers spatio-temporal autocorrelation.(iii)We prove the usefulness of the methods in improving ecological theory concerning density related productivity,trade-offs between facilitation and competition, and allometric relations between size ***: First evaluations based on remeasured Nelder wheels in oak(Quercus robur L.) show a size growth differentiation during the first observation period. In particular, height growth is accelerated under higher competition indicating facilitation effects. We detect furthermore a high variability in allometric ***: The proposed design, methods, and results are discussed regarding their impact on forest practice,model building, and ecological theory. We conclude that the extended Nelder approach is highly efficient in providing currently lacking individual tree level information.

Angular Anisotropy of the Fission Fragments in the Dinuclear System Model

A theoretical evaluation of the collective excitation spectra of nucleus at large deformations is possible within the framework of the dinuclear system(DNS) model, which treats the wave function of the fissioning nucleus as a superposition of a mononucleus configuration and two-cluster configurations in a dynamical way, permitting exchange of nucleons between clusters. In this work the method of calculation of the potential energy and the collective spectrum of fissioning nucleus at scission point is presented. Combining the DNS model calculations and the statistical model of fission we calculate the angular distribution of fission fragments for the neutron–induced fission of239 Pu.
