A RANS-VoF Numerical Model to Analyze the Output Power of An OWC-WEC Equipped with Wells and Impulse Turbines in A Hypothetical Sea-State

Wave energy is a renewable source with significant amount in relation to the global demand. A good concept of a device applied to extract this type of energy is the onshore oscillating water column wave energy converter(OWC-WEC). This study shows a numerical analysis of the diameter determination of two types of turbines, Wells and Impulse, installed in an onshore OWC device subjected to a hypothetical sea state. Commercial software FLUENT?,which is based on RANS-VoF(Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations and Volume of Fluid technique), is employed. A methodology that imposes air pressure on the chamber, considering the air compressibility effect, is used. The mathematical domain consists of a 10 m deep flume with a 10 m long and 10 m wide OWC chamber at its end(geometry is similar to that of the Pico's plant installed in Azores islands, Portugal). On the top of the chamber, a turbine works with air exhalation and inhalation induced by the water free surface which oscillates due to the incident wave. The hypothetical sea state, represented by a group of regular waves with periods from 6 to 12 s and heights from 1.00 to 2.00 m(each wave with an occurrence frequency), is considered to show the potential of the presented methodology. Maximum efficiency(relation between the average output and incident wave powers) of46% was obtained by using a Wells turbine with the diameter of 2.25 m, whereas the efficiency was 44% by an Impulse turbine with the diameter of 1.70 m.

Background: The condition known as polyneuropathy causes peripheral nerve disability, and is characterized by symmetrical distal numbness and paresthesia, often accompanied by pain and weakness. With the advancement of the pandemic in Brazil and in the world, the need for therapies as well as prophylaxis became the main focus in disease control as the viral vector platform vaccine AstraZeneca. Some effects were observed over the period of application. Case Summary: A male patient, 63 years old, previously vaccinated for COVID-19, developed active infection by the virus and in his convalescent period presented intense weakness, with prejudice to his daily activities, including personal hygiene ones. Conclusion: The patient made a complete recovery after combination therapy with testosterone derivates, ivermectin, corticosteroids, and vitamins, besides rehabilitation.

Relationship between phase angle,steatosis,and liver fibrosis in patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus/hepatitis C virus

BACKgROUND Malnutrition,lipodystrophy,and dyslipidemia are prevalent characteristics in patients with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)infection with or without previous *** a clinical condition can lead to the hypothesis of the presence of hepatic steatosis with possible progression to fibrosis and the risk of hepatocellular ***,a low phase angle(PA),evaluated by bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA),is an independent prognostic marker of clinical progression and survival in HIV-infected *** To evaluate the relationship between PA and body composition with steatosis and hepatic fibrosis in HIV/hepatitis C virus(HCV)-coinfected *** A retrospective observational study by convenience sampling of coinfected HIV/HCV patients,in which all patients underwent transient elastography(Fibroscan)and BIA ***’s t test was used for group comparisons,and Spearman’s or Pearson’s correlation test was used when *** significance level was set at 5%,and analyses were performed using SPSS version *** Forty-three patients who received antiretroviral therapy met the inclusion criteria,and 23(53.5%)were under treatment with protease inhibitors(PIs).There was no difference in PA between those who used PIs and those who did not(P=0.635).There was no correlation between fibrosis grade and PA(P=0.355)or lean mass(P=0.378).There was a significant inverse correlation between the controlled attenuation parameter(CAP)and lean mass(P=0.378),positive correlation between PA and lean mass(P=0.378),and negative correlation between PA and fatty mass(P=0.378),although the CAP and PA were not *** evaluated by sex,no significant correlations were *** PA determines the muscle function of HIV/HCV-coinfected patients,and the CAP values reinforce the association with lean mass,suggesting that patients require early nutritional interventions.

The crossroads of receptor-mediated signaling and endocytosis in plants

Plants deploy numerous plasma membrane receptors to sense and rapidly react to environmental changes. Correct localization and adequate protein levels of the cell-surface receptors are critical for signaling activation and modulation of plant development and defense against pathogens. After ligand binding, receptors are internalized for degradation and signaling attenuation. However, one emerging notion is that the Iigand-induced endocytosis of reCeptor complexes is important for the signal duration, amplitude, and specificity. Recently, mutants of maior endocytosis players, including clathrin and dynamin, have been shown to display defects in activation of a subset of signal transduction pathways, implying that signaling in plants might not be solely restricted to the plasma membrane. Here, we summarize the up-to-date knowledge of receptor complex endocytosis and its effect on the signaling outcome, in the context of plant development and immunity.

The interest in thermoplastic starch(TPS)as a substitute material to replace conventional thermoplastics continues especially due its biodegradability,availability,low cost and because it is obtained from renewable ***,its poor mechanical properties and its high sensitivity to humidity have limited its use in several ***,the copolymer poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)(EVOH),with two different ethylene contents,27 and 44 mol%were blended with TPS by extrusion in order to overcome these *** obtained blends were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis(TgA),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),mechanical tensile testing,Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM)and moisture absorption *** addition of EVOH copolymer did not significantly changed the thermal stability of TPS,however it increased the tensile strength in 65%when compared to *** morphology of the blends did not showed two distinct phases,an indication of miscibility or partial miscibility of the components.A decrease of moisture absorption was obtained by the addition of EVOH and is more pronounced for the EVOH with 44% of ethylene.

Association between Anisometropia as Well as Visual Acuity, Aniseikonia, and Stereopsis in the Absence of Strabismus

Objective: The current study aimed to assess the association between the type of anisometropia and its effects on monocular and binocular best-corrected vision acuity (BCVA), aniseikonia, and stereopsis in the absence of strabismus. Methods: In total, 162 individuals with anisometropia and healthy eyes and without a previous history of amblyopia therapy and eye surgery were included in the analysis. According to spherical and cylindrical components and spherical equivalent, they were divided into the spherical hyperopic anisometropia (SHA, n = 31), spherical myopic anisometropia (SMA, n = 45), astigmatic or cylindrical hyperopic anisometropia (CHA, n = 22), and astigmatic or cylindrical myopic anisometropia (CMA, n = 64) groups. Patients without anisometropia (NA, n = 188) were classified under the control group. The effects of anisometropia on monocular and binocular BCVA, aniseikonia, and stereoacuity were examined. Results: The NA group had a significantly lower LogMAR of BCVA of the right eye (RE), left eye (LE), worse eye than the SHA, SMA, CMA, and CHA groups. Moreover, the SMA group had significantly lower LogMAR of BCVA than the CHA group (p Conclusion: Worse visual levels of the RE, LE, worse eye, BCVA difference, and lower stereopsis were evidenced in each type of anisometropia defined in this study. Cylindrical hyperopic anisometropia (CHA) resulted in a statically significant worsening VA level and stereopsis than cylindrical myopic (CMA) or spherical myopic anisometropia.

Environmentally friendly energy sources alternatives to fossil fuels such as solar and wind are strategic for meeting the needs of an increasingly energy demanding society,despite their periodic/intermittent ***,urge the development of clean and renewable energy sources such as based on solar energy and water in a cyclic way,by photoinduced water-splitting and regeneration in fuel *** this context,energy storage devices such as hybrid supercapacitors become fundamental for realization of a sustainable *** this review,the early discovery and recent advances concerning synthetic strategies,hierarchical structures,and oxygen evolution reaction(OER)/hydrogen evolution reactions(HER) catalytic performances of nickel-vanadium double hydroxides(NiV-LDHs) based nanomaterials are summarized.A discussion about the role of vanadium ions in HER/OER was also included,highlighting the recent progress in theoretical calculations in this ***,some hybrid supercapacitor electrode materials based on NiV-LDHs are described,including the strategies to circumvent the parasitic oxygen evolution reaction during charge-discharge of those energy storage *** short,catalysts for HER/OER and hybrid supercapacitor electrode materials based on NiV-LDHs were reviewed considering their key multifunctional role in the way to a more sustainable society.

Non-destructive corrosion study on a magnesium alloy with mechanical properties tailored for biodegradable cardiovascular stent applications

AnMg-2Zn-0.6Zr-0.6Nd alloy for biodegradable cardiovascular stent applications was prepared through indirect extrusion. The alloy exhibited a superior combination of tensile yield strength(TYS), ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and elongation(EL) of about 269 MPa, 298 MPa and 25.6 %, respectively. In addition,the non-destructive electrochemical frequency modulation(EFM) technique was used for the first time to investigate the corrosion behavior of Mg alloys combined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium(DMEM) and in Hank’s solution. Compared with the corrosion rate of 0.07 mm/year in Hank’s solution, lower corrosion rate of 0.03 mm/year was achieved in DMEM. The significant differences between the corrosion rate trends were discussed and related with the composition of the corrosion layer formed. Depending on the biomimetic fluids tested, different corrosion products were precipitated on the alloy’s surface: a compact and homogeneous layer of Mg_(x)Ca_(y)(PO_(4))_(z) and Zn(OH)_(2) and organic compounds was formed in DMEM, whereas a partial coverage of Mg_(x)Ca_(y)(PO_(4))_(z) and Zn(OH)_(2) was formed in Hank’s solution.

glial cells are crucial for maintaining central nervous system(CNS)*** actively participate in immune responses,as well as form functional barriers,such as blood-brain barrier(BBB),which restrict the entry of pathogens and inflammatory mediators into the *** general,viral infections during the gestational period can alter the embryonic and fetal environment,and the related inflammatory response may affect neurodevelopment and lead to behavioral dysfunction during later stage of life,as highlighted by our group for Zika virus *** acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)induces a cytokine storm and,during pregnancy,may be related to a more severe form of the coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)and also to higher preterm birth ***-CoV-2 can also affect the CNS by inducing neurochemical remodeling in neural cells,which can compromise neuronal plasticity and synaptic ***,the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy on postnatal CNS,including brain development during childhood and adulthood,remains *** group has recently highlighted the impact of COVID-19 on the expression of molecular markers associated with neuropsychiatric disorders,which are strongly related to the inflammatory ***,based on these relationships,we discussed the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection either during pregnancy or in critical periods of neurodevelopment as a risk factor for neurological consequences in the offspring later in life,focusing on the potential role of glial ***,it is important to consider future and long-term public health concerns associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy.
