g.ophysical and Hydrog.olog.cal g.oundwater Prospectivity Mapping.in the Kraaipan g.anite-g.eenstone Terrain, Southeast Botswana

Application of reg.onal g.ophysical methods for hydrog.olog.cal purposes has increased over the last two decades especially in arid and semi-arid areas. A project to map the Kraaipan g.anite-g.eenstone terrain in southeast Botswana has recently been undertaken using.reg.onal aeromag.etic and g.avity data with the aim to map the rocks at depth to understand the g.olog. while the secondary objective was to subsequently assess the mineralization and g.oundwater potential in the area. An integ.ated analysis of the aeromag.etic and g.avity data and their derived/processed products is hereby investig.ted for g.oundwater for drinking and ag.icultural purposes. The studies include: subsurface characterisation and delineation of structural framework suitable for g.oundwater exploration and determination of petrophysical relationships used to link the g.ophysical properties (e.g., density) to hydrolog.cal properties (e.g., porosity). The results of interpretation indicate that the rocks are under ~50 m of Kalahari cover and the study area is composed of three aquifers: the extensive hard rock aquifer (g.anitic and volcanic), the important (fractured) karst aquifer and the minor sedimentary aquifer. The area is dissected by an ENE-to-EW-trending.dyke swarm visible on the reg.onal aeromag.etic data and much clearer on hig. resolution aeromag.etic data. Minor fault and/or dyke elements of NW-SE and NE-SW trend are observed. Spectral analysis reveals three main averag. ensample interfaces at depths of 0.7 km, 1.99 km and 4.8 km. The linear Euler solutions maps reveal that the majority depths to top of mag.etic bodies rang. from 40 m to 400 m throug.out the survey area. The shallowest depths are the most sig.ificant one in this case as they probably relate to depth of bedrock and thickness of reg.lith or thickest sediments. For 2695 existing.boreholes analysed, maximum borehole depth is 482 m (mean 108 m), and almost half (1263) were dry with another 972 having.low yield (1 - 5 m3

Arabinan Metabolism during.Seed Development and g.rmination in Arabidopsis

Arabinans are found in the pectic network of many cell walls, where, along.with g.lactan, they are present as side chains of Rhamnog.lacturonan I. Whilst arabinans have been reported to be abundant polymers in the cell walls of seeds from a rang. of plant species, their proposed role as a storag. reserve has not been thoroug.ly investig.ted. In the cell walls of Arabidopsis seeds, arabinose accounts for approximately 40% of the monosaccharide composition of non- cellulosic polysaccharides of embryos. Arabinose levels decline to -15% during.seedling.establishment, indicating.that cell wall arabinans may be mobilized during.g.rmination. Immunolocalization of arabinan in embryos, seeds, and seedling. reveals that arabinans accumulate in developing.and mature embryos, but disappear during.g.rmination and seedling.establishment. Experiments using.14C-arabinose show that it is readily incorporated and metabolized in g.owing.seedling., indicating.an active catabolic pathway for this sug.r. We found that depleting.arabinans in seeds using.a fung.l arabinanase causes delayed seedling.g.owth, lending.support to the hypothesis that these polymers may help fuel early seedling.g.owth.
