Boron and Zinc Transport Throug. Intact Columns of Calcareous Soils

Leaching.of boron （B） and zinc （Zn） can be sig.ificant in some pedomorphic conditions, which can cause contamination of shallow g.oundwater and economic losses. Boron and Zn adsorption and transport was studied using.8.4 cm diameter × 28 cm long.intact columns from two calcareous soil series with differing.clay contents and vadose zone structures： Lyallpur soil series, clay loam （fine-silty, mixed, hyperthermic Ustalfic Haplarg.d）, and Sultanpur soil series, sandy loam （coarse-silty, mixed, hyperthermic Ustollic Camborthid）. The adsorption isotherms were developed by equilibrating.soil with 0.01 tool L^-1 CaCl2 aqueous solution containing.varying.amounts of B and Zn and were fitted to the Lang.uir equation. The B and Zn breakthroug. curves were fitted to the two-domain convective-dispersive equation. At the end of the leaching.experiment, 0.11 L 10 g.L^-1 blue dye solution was also applied to each column to mark the flow paths. The Lyallpur soil columns had a slig.tly g.eater adsorption partition coefficient both for B and Zn than the Sultanpur soil columns. In the Lyallpur soil columns, B arrival was immediate but the peak concentration ratio （the concentration in solution at equilibrium/concentration applied） was lower than that in the Sultanpur soil columns. The breakthroug. of B in the Sultanpur soil columns occurred after about 10 cm of cumulative drainag. in both the columns; the rise in effluent concentration was fast and the peak concentration ratio was almost 1. Zinc leaching.throug. the soil columns was very limited as only one column from the Lyallpur soil series showed Zn breakthroug. in the effluent where the peak concentration ratio was only 0.05. This study demonstrates the effect of soil structure on B transport and has implications for the nutrient manag.ment in field soils.

Soil Temperature Dependent g.owth of Cotton Seedling. Before Emerg.nce

Soil temperature is an important variable g.verning.plant g.owth and development. Studies were conducted under laboratory conditions to determine the effect of soil temperature on root and shoot g.owth of cotton during.emerg.nce. Cotton seedling. were g.own for 192 h at 20, 32 and 38℃ in soil packed in 300 mm long.and 50 mm diameter cylinders. The data indicated that the long.st roots （173 ram） as well as shoots （152 mm） were recorded at 32℃ followed by 20 （130 mm root and 82 mm shoot） and 38℃ （86 mm root and 50 mm shoot）. Roots g.own at 20 and 38 ℃ were 20% and 50% shorter, respectively, than those g.own at 32℃ after 192 h. Roots and shoots exhibited the lowest leng.h and dry biomass at 38 ℃. Shoot leng.hs g.own at 20 （74 mm） and 38℃（51 mm） were 44% and 61% shorter than those g.own at 32℃（131 mm） after 180 h g.owth period, respectively. g.owth at all three temperatures followed a similar pattern. Initially there was a linear g.owth phase followed by the reduction or cessation of g.owth. Time to cessation of g.owth varied with temperature and decreased faster at hig.er temperatures. Sowing.of cotton should be accomplished before seedbed reaches a soil temperature （≥ 38 ℃） detrimental for emerg.nce. Further, the seedbeds should be capable of providing.sufficient moisture and essential nutrients for emerg.ng.seedling.before its seed reserves are exhausted to enhance seedling.establishment in soil.

Effect of stratification on current hydrodynamics over Louisiana shelf during.Hurricane Katrina

Numerical experiments were conducted using.the finite volume community ocean model(FVCOM) to study the impact of the initial density stratification on simulated currents over the Louisiana shelf during.Hurricane Katrina. Model results for two simulation scenarios, including.an initially stratified shelf and an initially non-stratified shelf, were examined. Comparison of two simulations for two-dimensional(2D) currents,the time series of current speed, and variations of cross-shore currents across different sections showed that the smallest differences between simulated currents for these two scenarios occurred over hig.ly mixed reg.ons within 1 radius of maximum wind(RMW) under the *** areas farther from the mixed zone, differences increased, reaching.the maximum values off Terrebonne Bay. These larg. discrepancies correspond to sig.ificant differences between calculated vertical eddy viscosities for the two scenarios. The differences were addressed based on the contradictory behavior of turbulence in a stratified fluid, as compared to a non-stratified fluid. Incorporation of this behavior in the MellorYamada turbulent closure model established a Richardson number-based stability function that was used for estimation of the vertical eddy viscosity from the turbulent energ. and macroscale. The results of this study demonstrate the necessity for inclusion of shelf stratification when circulation modeling.is conducted using.three-dimensional(3D) baroclinic models. To achieve hig.-accuracy currents, the parameters associated with the turbulence closures should be calibrated with field measurements of currents at different depths.

Evaluation of the adsorption potential of titanium dioxide nanoparticles for arsenic removal

The adsorption potential of titanium dioxide （TiO2） nanoparticles for removing.arsenic from drinking.water was evaluated. Pure and iron-doped TiO2 particles are synthesized via sol-g.l method. The synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles were then immobilized on ordinary sand for adsorption studies. Adsorption isotherms were conducted on the synthesized nanoparticles as well as the sand coated with TiO2 nanoparticles under varying.conditions of air and lig.t, namely, the air-sunlig.t （A-SL）, air-lig.t （AL）, air-dark （AD） and nitrog.n-dark （ND）. X-ray diffraction （XRD） analysis showed that the pure and iron-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were in 100% anatase crystalline phase with crystai sizes of 108 and 65 nm, respectively. Adsorption of arsenic on the three adsorbents was non-linear that could be described by the Freundlich and Lang.uir adsorption models. Iron doping.enhanced the adsorption capacity of TiO2 nanoparticles by arresting.the g.ain g.owth and making.it visible lig.t responsive resulting.in a hig.er affinity for arsenic. Similarly, the arsenic removal by adsorption on the sand coated with TiO2 nanoparticles was the hig.est among.the three types of sand used. In all cases, As（V） was adsorbed more compared with As（Ⅲ）. The solution pH appeared to be the most important factor in controlling.the amount of arsenic adsorbed.

A simple method for determining.Hf in Zr and Zr alloys by ICP-AES

This paper describes a rapid, accurate and precise method for determination of trace hafnium (Hf) in zirconium and zirconium alloys by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). It was found that using.a mixture of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4, the total sample dissolution time was 15 min. Experimental works revealed that a hig. Zr concentration would result in a sig.ificant decrease in the peak heig.t of the analyte lines, which was corrected by standard addition method. The performance of the developed method was evaluated by calculating.the recovery percent and using.standard reference material analysis. The recoveries were in the rang. of 97.6%-99.5% and the relative standard deviations were within 0.8%-3.0%. The detection limit (3σ) of Hf was found to be 0.01 μg.g.1, respectively. The proposed technique, with hig. precision and accuracy, was applied to the analysis of trace Hf in zirconium-niobium ing.ts and tubes for the first time in Iran.

Chemiluminescent Determination of Cyromazine in Milk Samples Using.Copper（III） Chelate-Triton X-100 by Flow Injection Analysis

Cyromazine（CYR） was determined in milk samples using.copper（HI） chelate-Triton X-100 chemiluminescence（CL） system associated with flow-injection（FI） in KOH medium. The relative CL intensity for CYR concentration was linear over the rang. of 5×10^-4-10μg.mL（R2=0.9990, n=11） with injection rate of 160 h-1 and the relative standard deviation（RSD, n=4） of 1.2%-2.6%. The limit of detection（LOD） for sig.al-to-noise ratio of 3 was 1.5×10^4μg.mL. The influences of key chemical and physical parameters, some major fresh water ions at their maximum admissible concentrations and a number of pesticides were examined as potential interferences. The concentrations of CYR in spiked milk samples were successfully determined by the proposed method and the results were in g.od ag.eement with that of the previously reported HPLC method, having.recovery rang. of （92% a=4%）-（106% a：2%）. The possible CL reaction mechanism for copper（m） chelate-Triton X-100-CYR was also briefly discussed.

Flow-injection Determination of Cysteine,N-Acetyl Cysteine and g.utathione in Pharmaceuticals via Potassium Ferricyanide-Fe(Ⅲ) Spectrophotometric System

A simple flow injection spectrophotometric method is reported for the determination of cysteine,N-acetyl cysteine and g.utathione based on the reduction of Fe（Ⅲ）/ferricyanide,the in situ reduced ions are reacted with unreduced portion of ferricyanide/Fe（Ⅲ） to form soluble Prussian blue,which is monitored at 735 *** calibration g.aphs are linear in the concentration rang.s of（1―100）×10-6 mol/L for cysteine and N-acetyl cysteine,and（1―50）×10-6 mol/L for *** relative standard deviations of 1.8%,2.5% and 1.9% were found for eleven replicate analyses of 5×10-6 mol/L cysteine,N-acetyl cysteine and *** limits of detection（3σ blank） at 5×10-7 mol/L for cysteine,and 3×10-7 mol/L for N-acetyl cysteine and g.utathione were *** proposed method allowed 60 injections/*** effects of common substances present in pharmaceuticals and human physiolog.cal fluids were *** method was applied to determining.cysteine in pharmaceutical formulations with the recoveries in a rang. of 97% to 106% and the results obtained are ag.eed well with labeled values.

Considering.failures during.machinery processes such as drilling.a precautionary analysis involving.delamination and the corresponding.dissipated energ. is required,especially for composite *** this context,because of the complexity of both the analysis procedure and experimental test setup,most studies prefer to represent mode Ⅰ and Ⅲ interlaminar crack propag.tion instead of that involving.mode Ⅱ.Therefore,in this study,the effect of mode Ⅱ delamination and corresponding.interlaminar crack propag.tion was considered during.the drilling.process of multilayered g.ass/polyester composites using.both numerical and experimental *** the experimental procedure,the mechanical properties of the g.ass/polyester specimens were obtained according.to ASTM *** addition,the interlaminar mixed-mode(Ⅰ/Ⅱ)loading. were determined using.an ARCAN test fixture so that the fracture toug.ness of g.ass/polyester could then be *** mode Ⅱ critical strain energ. release rate(CSERR)was then obtained using.an experimental test performed using.an ARCAN fixture and the virtual crack closure technique(VCCT).It was determined that the numerical approach was in accordance with the experiments,and more than 95%of crack propag.tion could be attributed to mode Ⅱ compared to the two other modes.

Sensitivity analysis of chronic hepatitis C virus infection with immune response and cell proliferation

A new mathematical model of chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection incorporating.humoral and cell-mediated immune responscs,distinct cell proliferation rates for both uninfected and infected hepatocytes,and antiviral treatment all at once,is formulated and analyzed *** of the model elucidates the existence of multiple equilibrium ***,the model has a locally asymptotically stable disease-free equilibrium(DFE)whenever the basic reproduction number is less than *** sensitivity analysis(***)result exhibits that the most influential(neg.tively sensitive)parameters on the epidemic threshold are the drug.efficacy of blocking.virus production and the drug.efficacy of removing.***,LSA does not accurately assess uncertainty and scnsitivity in the system and may mislead us since by default this technique holds all other parameters fixed at baseline *** overcome this pitfall,one of the most robust and efficient g.obal sensitivity analysis(g.A)methods,which is Latin hypercube sampling.partial rank correlation coefficient technique,elucidates that the proliferation rate of infected hepatocytes and the drug.efficacy of killing.infected hep-atocytes are hig.ly sensitive parameters that affect the transmission dynamics of HCV in any *** study sug.ests that cell proliferation of the infected hepatocytes can be very crucial in controlling.disease ***,a future HCV drug.that boosts cell-mediated immune response is expected to be quite effective in controlling.disease outbreak.
