The identification of jets orig.nating.from quarks and g.uons,often referred to as quark/g.uon tag.ing.plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Larg. Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying.to quarks often rely on suppressing.a larg. g.uon-induced backg.ound.This paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/g.uon tag.ers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using.√s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integ.ated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS experiment.Two tag.ers with hig. performances in rejecting.jets from g.uon over jets from quarks are studied:one tag.er is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using.a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/g.uon fraction in data,by using.quark/g.uon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet pseudorapidity.Differences in tag.ing.efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 g.V and 2 TeV and for multiple tag.er working.points.

Sing.e-photon-level lig.t storag. with distributed Rydberg.excitations in cold atoms

We present an improved version of the superatom(SA)model to examine the slow-lig.t dynamics of a few-photons sig.al field in cold Rydberg.atoms with van der Waals(vdW)interactions.A main feature of this version is that it promises consistent estimations on total Rydberg.excitations based on dynamic equations of SAs or atoms.We consider two specific cases in which the incident sig.al field contains more photons with a smaller detuning.or less photons with a larg.r detuning.so as to realize the sing.e-photon-level lig.t storag..It is found that vdW interactions play a sig.ificant role even for the slow-lig.t dynamics of a sing.e-photon sig.al field as distributed Rydberg.excitations are inevitable in the picture of dark-state polariton.Moreover,the stored(retrieved)sig.al field exhibits a clearly asymmetric(more symmetric)profile because its leading.and trailing.edg.s underg. different(identical)traveling.journeys,and hig.er storag./retrieval efficiencies with well preserved profiles apply only to weaker and well detuned sig.al fields.These finding. are crucial to understand the nontrivial interplay of sing.e-photon-level lig.t storag. and distributed Rydberg.excitations.

The typically tiny effect of radiation damping.on a moving.body can be amplified to a favorable extent by exploiting.the sharp reflectivity slope at one edg. of an optically induced stop-band in atoms loaded into an optical lattice.In this paper,this phenomenon is demonstrated for the periodically trapped and coherently driven cold 87Rb atoms,where radiation damping.mig.t be much larg.r than that anticipated in previous proposals and become comparable with radiation pressure.Such an enhancement could be observed even at speeds of only a few meters per second with less than 1.0%absorption,making.radiation damping.experimentally accessible.

We report on the unconventional optical properties exhibited by a two-dimensional array of thin Si nanowires arrang.d in a random fractal g.ometry and fabricated using.an inexpensive,fast and maskless process compatible with Si technolog..The structure allows for a hig. lig.t-trapping.efficiency across the entire visible rang.,attaining.total reflectance values as low as 0.1%when the waveleng.h in the medium matches the leng.h scale of maximum heterog.neity in the system.We show that the random fractal structure of our nanowire array is responsible for a strong.in-plane multiple scattering.which is related to the material refractive index fluctuations and leads to a g.eatly enhanced Raman scattering.and a brig.t photoluminescence.These strong.emissions are correlated on all leng.h scales according.to the refractive index fluctuations.The relevance and the perspectives of the reported results are discussed as promising.for Si-based photovoltaic and photonic applications.

AIM: To investig.te the effects of bariatric surg.ry on metabolic parameters, incretin hormone secretion, and duodenal and ileal mucosal g.ne expression.METHODS: Nine patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM), chronic serum hyperg.ycemia for more than2 years, and a body mass index(BMI) of 30-35 kg.m2 underwent metabolic surg.ry sleeve g.strectomy with transit bipartition between May 2011 and December2011. Blood samples were collected pre and 3, 6 and12 mo postsurg.ry. Duodenal and ileal mucosa samples were collected pre- and 3 mo postsurg.ry. Pre- and postoperative blood samples were collected in the fasting.state before ing.stion of a standard meal(520kcal) and ag.in 30, 60, 90, and 120 min after the mealto determine hemog.obin A1c(HbA1c) levels and the lipid profile, which consisted of trig.yceride and total cholesterol levels. Intestinal g.ne expression of p53 and transforming.g.owth factor(Tg.)-β was analyzed using.quantitative reverse-transcription PCR. g.stric inhibitory polypeptide(g.P) and g.ucag.n-like peptide-1(g.P-1)were quantified using.the enzyme-linked immunoassay method and analyzed pre- and postoperatively.Student's t test or repeated measurements analysis of variance with Bonferroni corrections were performed as appropriate.RESULTS: BMI values decreased by 15.7% within the initial 3 mo after surg.ry(31.29 ± 0.73 vs 26.398± 0.68, P g.in similar values 12 mo postoperatively(20-25 kg.m2). All of the patients experienced improved T2 DM, with 7 patients(78%)achieving.complete remission(HbA1c g.improved diabetes(HbA1cg.ycemic ag.nts). At 3 mo postoperatively, fasting.plasma g.ucose had also decreased(59%)(269.55 ±18.24 mg.dL vs 100.77 ± 3.13 mg.dL, P g.ificant chang.s at 6 or 12 mo postoperatively. In the first month postoperatively,there was a complete withdrawal of hypog.ycemic medications in all patients, who were taking.at least2
