Elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) wine as a novel potential functional food product

Throughout human civilization, elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) has been used as a traditional drug and addition to various dishes. Although it is a widespread plant species, it is still being researched and rarely used to obtain new products. In this study, we focused on the chemical and phytochemical composition and biological and pharmacological effects of elderberry wine, obtained by applying different temperature treatments (without temperature treatment – W1;60 °C, 5 min – W2;60 °C, 10 min – W3;and 70 °C, 5 min – W4 ). HPLC-MS/MS and spectrophotometric techniques determined the chemical and phytochemical profiles of obtained wines. The main compounds in analyzed wines were p-Hydroxybenzoic, protocatechuic and chlorogenic acids, quercetin, quercetin-3-O-hexoside, and rutin . To assess the biological potential, antioxidant, neuroprotective (acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase inhibition), antityrosinase, and antidiabetic (amylase inhibition and glucosidase inhibition) abilities were examined. Wine W4 showed the strongest antioxidant activity, which correlated well with the high phenol content. The best inhibitory effect of β-glucosidase was observed in wine W3 . However, the most potent tyrosinase inhibitor was wine W4 . The presented results prove elderberry wine's high biological and industrial potential and open new avenues for formulating new products that could be brought to market.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)coatings were carried out in silicate-based electrolyte embedded with various amounts of carbon nanotube(CNT)additives(0,0.5,1,2 and 4 g/L)on AZ80 magnesium alloy ***,tribological and electrochemical corrosion properties of the coated specimens were *** results demonstrated that the increasing CNT additions into the electrolyte resulted in a gradual increase in the thickness of PEO-coating *** CNT addition to the electrolyte by 0.5 g/L resulted in a slight decrease in the roughness of PEO-coating above which it continually *** resistance of the PEO-coated specimens showed a gradual improvement with increasing CNT-incorporation within the *** electrochemical corrosion tests revealed that the best corrosion resistance was found after the CNT addition into the electrolyte by 0.5 g/L due to the better roughness values,more homogenous coating layers and less pore formation.

Effect of Y addition on microstructure and corrosion behavior of extruded Mg-Zn-Nd-Zr alloy

Determination of fire-access zones along road networks in firesensitive forests

Wild forest fires are one of the greatest environmental disasters affecting forest resources. Along the coastal zone of the Mediterranean region in Turkey, forested areas are classified as first-degree, fire-sensitive areas. Every year, thousands of hectares of forests have been destroyed in Turkey. In this study, fire-access zones were determined in the Mediterranean forests of Turkey, by utilizing geographic information systems （gIS） technology. The effective reach distance of fire hoses from both sides of roads was considered in order to delineate fireaccess zones. The effective reach distance can vary based on the technical capabilities and hydraulic capacity of fire trucks （minimum and maximum pressures on water pump）; terrain structures （uphill, downhill and flat）; and ground slope. These factors and their influences were studied in fire sensitive forest areas located in the eastern Mediterranean city of Kahramanmaras in Turkey. First, terrain structures on both sides of the road network and groundslope classes were determined based on gIS data layers. Then, fire access zones were delineated according to water pressure data, terrain structures, and ground-slope classes. The results indicated that 69.30 % of the forested areas were within the fire-access zones, while the rest of the forest was out of reach the fire hoses. The accessible areas were also calculated for forested areas with different fire- sensitivity degrees. The accessible areas were 69.59, 69.96, and 67.16 % for the forested areas that are sensitive to fires at the first, second, and third degrees, respectively. This finding has implications for the monitoring and management of fire threats in areas outside of the reach distance. The outside areas should receive extra attention and monitoring during the fire season so that fires are detected ahead of time and management has sufficient time to react. Microstructure,mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of as-cast and as-extruded Mg-4 wt%Zn-1 wt%La magnesium alloys were *** alloys were produced by low-pressure die casting method and extruded at 350℃after homogenization at 400℃for 24 *** results show that the as-cast alloy mainly consists of primaryα-Mg matrix and Mg-Zn-La ternary second phases(also called T-Phase)along grain boundaries and isolated spherical particles inside the *** extrusion at350℃,the average grain size decreases by 81%due to dynamic recrystallization mechanism and T-phase particles are distributed along the extrusion *** elongation,yield strength and tensile strength of the as-cast Mg-4Zn-1La alloy increase by 179%,90%and 40%,respectively,as a result of the extrusion *** as-extruded Mg-4Zn-1La alloy shows better corrosion resistance than the as-cast alloy due to increased grain boundaries and decreased content of T-phase.

Analysis of temporal changes in land cover and landscape metrics of a managed forest in the west Black Sea region of northern Turkey: 1970–2010

Forest structure changes continuously by natural and anthropogenic effects. Because the level of goods and services provided by forest ecosystems are related to this structure, some attributes have to be controlled while they are being managed. In this paper we describe the long-term temporal changes in land area and landscape metrics related to different land uses of a managed forest in Turkey. The study was carried out for the Daday Forest Planning Unit located in the west Black Sea region of northern Turkey. The total area is 16,813 ha and besides wood production, it is managed for erosion control, public health, aesthetics, and recreation. Stand type maps that were constructed in 1970,1989, 1999, and 2010 were used in this analysis. Transition matrixes that illustrate area changes among cover types and temporal changes on some landscape metrics were obtained using geographic Information Systems. Stands were separated into small patches, and thus the number of patches increased nearly two-fold between 1970 and 2010. The total forest edge increased and through the associated fragmentation, the amount of core forest area decreased at the landscape scale. Landscape metrics were applied to digitized versions of historical maps to assess how forest area changed. Human use of the land has changed, forest management practices have evolved, and these along with natural forest growth have contributed to interesting changes in landscape character.

Evolution of Microstructure, Residual Stress, and Tensile Properties of Mg–Zn–Y–La–Zr Magnesium Alloy Processed by Extrusion

The microstructure, texture, residual stress, and tensile properties of Mg–6 Zn–2 Y–1 La–0.5 Zr(wt%) magnesium alloy were investigated before and after extrusion process, which performed at 300 °C and 400 °C. The microstructural characterizations indicated that the as-cast alloy was comprised of α-Mg, Mg–Zn, Mg–Zn–La, and Mg–Zn–Y phases. During homogenization at 400 °C for 24 h, most of the secondary phases exhibited partial dissolution. Extrusion process led to a remarkable grain refi nement due to dynamic recrystallization(DRX). The degree of DRX and the DRXed grain size increased with increasing extrusion temperature. The homogenized alloy did not show a preferential crystallographic orientation, whereas the extruded alloys showed strong basal texture. The extrusion process led to a signifi cant improvement on the compressive residual stress and mechanical properties. The alloy extruded at 300 °C exhibited the highest basal texture intensity, the compressive residual stress and hardness, and yield and tensile strengths among the studied alloys.

Comparison of the Retinomax hand-held autorefractor versus table-top autorefractor and retinoscopy

AIM:To compare noncycloplegic and cycloplegic results of Retinomax measurements with findings achieved after cycloplegia using table-top autorefractor and ***:The study included 127 patients(mean age96.7mo,range 21 to 221).Retinomax(Rmax)(Nikon Inc.,Japan)was used to obtain noncycloplegic *** cycloplegia,refraction was measured with Rmax,table-top autorefractor(TTR)(Nikon NRK 8000,Inc.,Japan)and *** values of sphere,spherical equivalent,cylinder and axis of cylinder were recorded for Rmax,TTR and retinoscopy in each *** results were analyzed ***:The mean spheric values(SV),spherical equivalent values(SEV)and cylindrical values(CV)of the noncycloplegic Rmax(SV:0.64 D,SEV:0.65 D and CV:0.03 D,respectively)were found to be significantly lower than cycloplegic TTR(1.43 D,1.38 D and 0.3 D;P=0.012,P=0.011 and P=0.04,respectively)and retinoscopy(1.34 D,1.45 D and 0.23 D;P=0.04,P=0.002 and P=0.045,respectively).Mean cycloplegic SV,SEV,CV were not significantly different between Rmax and TTR,Rmax and retinoscopy,TTR and *** or noncycloplegic axis values were not different between any ***:Rmax may be used successfully as a screening tool but may not be accurate enough for actual spectacle *** Rmax measurements may be able to identify refractive error in children because of approximate results to retinoscopy.

Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness changes in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: one year follow-up results

·AIM: To investigate the retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)thickness changes in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(OSAS) for one year follow-up. To discuss the possibility of detecting tendency of glaucoma in this population by using spectral domain optical coherence tomography(3D-OCT-2000 Spectral domain).·METHODS: After polysomnographic study, all subjects(64 OSAS patients and 40 controls) underwent detailed ophthalmological examination. After these examinations,patients with glaucoma and patients who had ophthalmological and/or systemic disease were excluded from the ***, 20 patients in OSAS group and five patients in controls were excluded from the study in the first examination and follow-up period. The RNFL thickness was assessed with OCT. Forty-four OSAS patients and 35 control subjects were followed up for12 mo. RNFL thickness change and OSAS patients were evaluated for severity of disease by Apnea-Hypopnea Index(AHI).·RESULTS: Forty-four OSAS patients and 35 controls were enrolled in the study. Statistically significance was found between OSAS patients and controls at the 12 *** RNFL thickness was found to be significantly lower in last measurements in OSAS patients when compared with first measurements and control subjects(P gnificant correlation among AHI, and RNFL thickness(P ggest that the patients with OSAS were related with a proportional decrease in the RNFL thickness. These patients should be followed up regularly for glaucomatous changes. Detecting more RNFL thinning in severe OSAS was important.

Pistacia terebinthus,Anacardiaceae,is used in traditional medicine and its fruits are consumed as coffee in ***,the research on the chemical and biological activity of *** leaves is almost *** the present study,we aimed to evaluate the comprehensive antioxidant capacity(DPPH,ABTS,reducing power and metal chelating activity)and enzyme inhibitory effects(against AChE,BChE,α-amylase,α-glucosidase,and tyrosinase)as well as phytochemical content of the leaves extracts from *** phytochemical composition in extracts were analysed using *** phenolics and flavonoids contents of the extracts were 65.51-210.54 mg gAE/g and 54.94-169.89 mg RE/g,*** highest level of total phenolic content was found in the methanol extract while the maximum total flavonoid content observed in ethyl acetate *** antioxidant results showed that methanol extract(ABTS:3.29 mmol TE/g,DPPH:2.06 mmol TE/g,CUPRAC:2.67 mmol TE/g,FRAP:1.62 mmol TE/g,Metal chelating activity:65.65 mg EDTA/g)exhibited promising antioxidant *** methanol extract also demonstrated important enzyme inhibitory *** results suggest that the extracts of *** leaves has the potential to be used as good candidate of natural antioxidants and enzyme inhibitors.
