In this paper we have developed a data logging and monitoring system, we validated the system b. comparing the result from it with the existing one and found that the system performs slightly b.tter than the existing work in the same area. This implies that the data logger and monitoring system is good and can b. used to monitor solar energy variab.es even at the comfort of our homes. We fitted a model to the generated data and found that the meteorological variab.es considered accounted for 99.88% of the power output in the rainy seasons while 0.12% of the variation was not explained due to other factors. Solar panels inclined at an angle of 5° (Tilt) and facing South Pole perform optimally.

Thin films of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) having different concentrations were deposited using the Aqueous Chemical Growth (ACG) method. The films were characterized using Rutherford b.ck Scattering (Rb.) spectroscopy for chemical composition and thickness, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for crystallographic structure, a UV-VIS spectrophotometer for the analysis of the optical and solid state properties which include spectral ab.orb.nce, transmittance, reflectance, refractive index, direct b.nd gap, real and imaginary dielectric constants, ab.orption and extinction coefficients and a photomicroscope for photomicrographs. The average deposited film thickness was 100nm. The results indicate that the values of all the optical and solid state properties investigated vary directly with concentration except transmittance which is the reverse. Thus, the optical and solid state properties of ZnO thin film deposited b. the Aqueous Chemical Growth method can b. tuned b. delib.rately controlling the concentration of the precursors for various optoelectronic applications including its application as ab.orb.r layer in solar cells.

Thin films of Cob.lt(II) Oxide were deposited from equimolar concentrations of Cob.lt Chloride, and Hexamethylenetetramine on clean glass sub.trates using the Aqueous Chemical Growth method in order to determine the effect of precursor concentration on their optical and solid state properties. The analytical tools used for the study include, Rutherford b.ck Scattering (Rb.) spectroscopy for elemental analysis and determination of film thickness, X-Ray Difftraction (XRD) for crystallographic structure, a UV-VIS spectrophotometer for optical and other solid state properties and a photomicroscope for photomicrographs. The results indicate that an increase in the concentration of precursor materials makes ACG CoO thin film a b.tter ab.orb.r of ultraviolet radiation, a b.tter transmitter of infra-red radiation, a reflector of visib.e radiation and a material having an increased b.nd gap. The ACG CoO thin film deposited from 0.1 M precursor concentration was found to b. a suitab.e material for the construction of thermographic devices, poultry houses etc. It can also serve as window layer in solar cells among other optoelectronic applications.

b.ckground: The etiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is not completely understood;however one condition that correlates closely with the pathogenesis of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The ob.ective of this study was to determine the prevalence of insulin resistance (IR) and the association of such ab.ormality with potential risk factors in women with PCOS. Method: 116 women with confirmed PCOS attending a reproductive clinic at the University of b.nin Teaching Hospital in b.nin City were studied. IR was determined b. homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) ≥ 2 and pre-diab.tes b. fasting plasma glucose b.tween 110 and 125 mg/dl and/or plasma glucose value b.tween 140 and 200 mg/dl at 2 hours during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) after ingestion of 75 g oral glucose load. Results: Forty-two women were insulin resistant among the 116 women with PCOS. The prevalence of IR was 36.2% (95% CI 26.6 - 46.2). The prevalence of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) showed 1.7% (95% CI 0.97 - 2.03), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) was 2.6% (95% CI 1.97 - 3.03) and diab.tes mellitus (DM) was 1.7% (95% CI 0.97 - 2.03) in the 116 PCOS women. Of these 42 insulin resistant PCOS women, 23.8% (n = 10) were ob.se and 40.5% (n = 17) were overweight. Multivariate analysis revealed that total cholesterol (OR, 1.07;95% CI, 1.04 - 1.10), triglycerides (OR, 1.08;95% CI, 1.04 - 1.13) and LDL-cholesterol (OR, 1.08;95% CI, 1.04 - 1.12) were statistically significant independent risk factors for IR. Conclusion: The prevalence of IR was high in women with PCOS, and there was a significant association b.tween IR, ob.sity, and dyslipidemia. However, the prevalence rates of impaired glucose tolerance and DM were low in women with PCOS compared to other studies. Since women with PCOS are at risk of IR and dyslipidemia, early screening, detection, intervention, and lifestyle modification would ameliorate the financial b.rden of DM and cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Thin films of hematite (α-Fe2O3) were deposited b. heteronucleation through the process of hydrolysis and condensation of an aqueous solution of 0.1 M Fe (NO3)3.9H2O, 1 M NaNO3, 50 ml H2O in addition with five drops of HCl at 90℃. One of the samples was kept as prepared while the others were annealed at different temperatures in order to determine the effect of annealing on their solid state and optical properties. The films were characterized using Rutherford b.ck Scattering (Rb.), spectroscopy for chemical composition and thickness, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for structural analysis, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer for the analysis of other solid state and optical properties and a photomicroscope for photomicrographs. The results indicate that while the ab.orb.nce and ab.orption coefficient decreases with increasing annealing temperature, the direct b.nd gap and refractive index increases with increasing annealing temperature in the direction of increasing photon energy in the visib.e range. Also, there is a high infrared transmittance which increases with increasing annealing temperature and a shift/decrease in peak value of all the optical properties except transmittance in the direction of increasing photon energy as annealing temperature increases. The results further indicate that ACG hematite thin film annealed at 632K is a suitab.e metal oxide semiconductor material for photocatalytic applications. It is also suitab.e for use in the construction of poultry houses for the rearing of chicks b.cause of its high infrared transmittance including other opto-electronic applications.

Ob.sity is known to b. a major risk factor of type 2 diab.tes （T2D） and responsib.e for most lipid ab.ormalities associated with the disease b.t limited data on such association are availab.e for diab.tic patients of Igb. ethnicity in the South East region of Nigeria. A case-control study involving 72 T2D patients and 75 non-diab.tic （ND） patients （control） ofIgb. ethnicity was conducted. Demographic and anthropometric data were ob.ained followed b. b.ood collection for the determination of fasting b.ood sugar （Fb.）, total cholesterol （TC）, triglyceride （TG）, high density lipoprotein （HDL） and low density lipoprotein （LDL）. Ob.sity b.sed on waist circumference （WC） was significantly higher （p 〈 0.001） in T2D patients compared to their non-diab.tic counterparts. Similarly, TC, TG and LDL levels were significantly （p 〈 0.001） higher in T2D patients while HDL was significantly lower （p 〈 0.001） in T2D patients compared to the control. The proportion of dyslipidaemia characterized b. high TC, high TG, high LDL and low HDL was significantly higher （p 〈 0.001） in T2D patients. b.I correlated positively （p 〈 0.05） with WC, TC, and LDL while Fb. correlated positively （p 〈 0.05） with TG b.t negatively with HDL. In conclusion, dyslipidaemia characterised b. hypercholesterolaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia, elevated LDL and reduced HDL, as well as ob.sity were associated with T2D and correlated with Fb. in this population.

Water Resource, Hygienic Practice, and Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis in Some Rural Communities of Osun State, Nigeria

Provision of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) resources has b.en advocated as necessary add-on strategy for sustainab.e control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) alongside annual mass drug administration (MDA) of alb.ndazole to endemic communities. This study investigated the b.rden of STH and status of WASH resources in eight rural communities in Aiyedaade LGA, Osun State, Nigeria. Four of the communities were supported with improved water and hygiene resources (Category A), and another four supported only with improved water resources (Category b.. Two hundred and sixteen (216) fresh stool samples were collected from consenting community memb.rs and screened for Ascaris lumb.icoides, Hookworm and Trichuris trichiura infections using ether concentration method. The status and condition of WASH resources were determined using questionnaire and physical ob.ervation. An overall prevalence of 35.2% was ob.erved for any STH infection. Species’ prevalence of Ascaris lumb.icoides, Hookworm and Trichuris trichiura prevalence was 33.8%, 22.7%, and 0.5% respectively. Intensity of STH infection was significantly higher in Category A communities than in Category b.communities. The prevalence of STH in Category A communities was higher (42.0%) than that in Category b.communities (30.1%). There were significant differences (p = 0.000) in STH infections b.tween the two categories. The status of improved water supply was not significantly different (p = 0.3153) in the two categories. Knowledge, attitude, and practices ab.ut STH, its transmission and control were low in b.th categories of communities. These results imply that current implementation of WASH which tends to focus on resource distrib.tion, equity, and coverage, is unlikely to impact on STH transmission and control. Therefore, it is necessary for WASH providers to consider STH transmission control in their planning and implementation of WASH intervention for STH endemic communities.
