Screening of Type 2 Diabetes in the City of Belo Horizonte: Differences between Genders

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem that carries a high social and economic burden. Its diagnosis is unknown in half of individuals who have the disease. The diagnosis of the risk factors should be done in the beginning, since changes in lifestyle and hyperglycemic correction may delay the appearance of the disease and its complications. In this context, screening has been considered an important tool for an early detection of diabetes in asymptomatic adults. Objective: The objective is to track diabetes in people from BH, comparing genders. patients and methods: people were interviewed with questions concerning the risk factors associated with the development of diabetes. According to the risk factors present, they were classified as non-diabetic [ND], pre-diabetic [pD] or diabetic [DM]. Statistical analyses were performed considering p ≤ 0.05 as significant. Results: 1264 individuals participated (5.5% DM, 6.5% pD, 88.0% ND). When grouped, pD and DM males were more prevalent than pD and DM females. Those in the DM group had higher blood pressure, age, glycaemia, number of past smokers, first-degree relatives with diabetes than either pD or ND. Both males and females in DM and pD groups had a higher waist circumference than did either ND males or females. ND men had a higher intake of fried food and smoked more in the past than ND women. Both ND and pD males had higher blood pressure than women from the same groups. Conclusion: Screening for diabetes is very important for an early diagnosis and to avoid future complications in patients. It’s possible to infer that women are more conscientious when it comes to taking care of themselves than men.

An Unusual Case of Herpes Simplex Meningitis after Inadvertent puncture of the Subarachnoid Space

The study seeks to report the clinical evolution of a patient who suffered an inadvertent subarachnoid puncture and evolved with a herpetic viral meningitis, confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Female, 48 years old, submitted to epidural anesthesia, for surgery, with median puncture, between l2-l3 and inadvertently accessed the subarachnoid space, with clear cerebrospinal fluid. The same puncture was used and the solution with 15 mg hyperbaric bupivacaine and 80 mcg morphine was administered. There was no complication during the entire surgical procedure. On the first postoperative day, she started complaining of headache and nausea, being treated with dipyrone, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and ondansetron. On the third day, she presented two episodes of seizure that ceased with the use of diazepam 10 mg. On the fifth day, the patient presented fever and seizures, which did not stop with medication, requiring sedation, orotracheal intubation and transfer to the intensive care unit. lumbar puncture was performed for CSF analysis, which was positive for Herpes simplex type I. The patient was extubated, on the second day of hospitalization, maintained with a maintenance dose of phenytoin, sumatriptan, dipyrone, metoclopramide and acyclovir 500 mg, remaining intravenous, without presenting new seizures for 45 days, when she was discharged. After 30 days, he returned for a review consultation without making a complaint.

A case is presented in which an alternative surgical method for managing poorl y dilating pupils preoperatively or intraoperatively was employed. The technique uses iris sutures, is simple, safe, easily reproducible, and reversible, and do es not require new devices for pupil enlargement. This new surgical method is ap propriate for extracapsular cataract extraction and phacoemulsification or poste rior segment surgeries, and maintains pupillary appearance and function postoper atively. Although other techniques are generally available, this technique may b e useful in unique situations where other pupil devices or methods are not avail able.

proteomics techniques were used to study the molecular mechanisms involved in the defense of tomato against late blight (phytophthora infestans). proteins were extracted from resistant access BGH-2127 and susceptible cultivar “Santa Clara”. leaves of the inoculated and non-inoculated (control) genotypes were collected at 0, 2, and 48 h after inoculation and analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE), followed by identification with mass spectrometry (MAlDI TOF-TOF). A total of 56 differentially abundant proteins were identified, of which 39 were resistant genotypes and 17 were susceptible. These proteins were categorized into functional groups of energy and metabolism, photosynthesis, stress and defense, transcription, other proteins, and as un-characterized ones. For access BGH-2127, oxidative stress proteins (2-cis peroxiedoxin BAS1 and 2-cis peroxiredoxin) and thaumatin-like protein showed increase in the relative abundance at 0 and 48 h of inoculation, respectively, and were therefore considered important for the defense mechanism of this genotype. The expression standards evaluated by real-time pCR differed from the results of the proteomic analysis. The protein-protein interaction networks provided important information on the cellular activities involved in the resistance of BGH-2127 late blight.

Initial Development of Cowpea Bean Fertilized with Natural phosphate in the Brazilian Cerrado Soil

Cowpea, string Bean, or Macassar bean [Vigna unguiculata (l.) Walp] presents a short life cycle, low water requirement, develops in soils of low fertility, and has the ability to fix nitrogen from the air. In the Cerrado, the oxisols occupy practically all the flat to soft-wavy areas with little reserve of nutrients for the plants, in general, they are soils with great limitations of fertility. A source of alternative phosphate fertilization is the use of reactive natural phosphates. The reactive natural phosphate of Bayóvar presents intermediate solubility between the sources of soluble phosphates and the natural phosphates. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the initial development of Cowpea beans fertilized with the natural Bayóvar phosphate used for cultivation of the Brazilian Cerrado Oxisol. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six doses of phosphorus (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 mg·dm-3) using natural Bayovar phosphate as a source in four replications. The species used in this study was the legume cowpea bean [Vigna unguiculata (l.) Walp] cultivar Tumucumaque. The treatments were applied using the natural phosphate Bayóvar as a source of phosphorus (29% of p2O5). At 33 DAS (days after sowing), the variable number of leaves of the Cowpea bean was analyzed and at 40 DAS, the variables plant height, SpAD chlorophyll index (Soil plant Analysis Development) and stem diameter were analyzed. For all variables analyzed there was a significant effect. The initial development of the cowpea bean cultivated in the Brazilian Cerrado Oxisol was significantly influenced by the Bayóvar natural phosphate fertilization with the best phosphorus (p2O5) doses in the range of 200 to 350 mg·

Comparison of Two protocols of Agar Gel Immunodiffusion(AGID)Used to Diagnose of Equine Infectious Anemia(EIA)

The aim of the present study was to compare two protocols of Agar Gel Immunodiffusion (AGID) that can be used to diagnose Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). Different volumes of reagents and support for agar gel were used, as recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture, livestock and Food Supply (MApA) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Equidae sera samples (n = 1000) were tested using a national commercial kit and different volumes (i.e. 25 μl—MApA and 50 μl—OIE) of reagents and standard sera. Antigen was used as recommended by MApA. The results were assessed by two operators, 48 hours after beginning the test. At the end of the experiment, a Kappa index of 1 was obtained by the operators, for the interpretation of the results and for the different volumes of reagents used. Similar results of agreement (Kappa index = 1) were obtained when using slides or petri dishes as support for the agar gel. In both cases, an almost perfect agreement was achieved, suggesting that the use of different supports does not affect the results. These findings indicate that both protocols (MApA and OIE) can be used to diagnose EIA.

The objective of this review was to address the stress effects on meat quality considering the main attributes that involve meat *** protein production has been increasing with global demand for meat with meat quality a major concern,especially for more demanding consumers who are looking for quality products to meet their *** quality of the meat is the result of what happened to the animal throughout the production chain,that is,good rearing conditions result in a better meat *** types of stress can be harmful to animals due to inadequate or improper animal handling on farms,inadequate transport conditions,poorly maintained trucks and roads,and conditions that agitate animals can lead to bruising,thermal *** stress in animals occurs when they are in adverse conditions and can significantly compromise meat quality *** an example,stress can significantly affect meat quality parameters as drip loss(Dl),meat color,change ultimate pH and cause meat *** the main parameters of evaluation used for meat quality are color,characterized by luminosity(l^*,a^*,b^*),lipid and protein oxidation,pH,water holding capacity(WHC)and *** and processing high-quality meat is a challenge since it is necessary to apply methods that promote comfort in a complete sense,in a way that minimizes inducing significant *** on the results presented it is remarkable that stress alters the meat quality,compromising the main attributes that involve it,like color,pH,WHC,Warner-Bratzler shear force(WBSF),lipid oxidation,among others andis necessary to avoid or reduce stress caused during the production of the animals to ensure a high-quality meat,resulting in greater profitability for the producer.

Zea mays l. is one of the biggest cropping systems among the sustainable development agronomy. pollen from this crop source is unexplored and apiculture can be a good partner adding value to the product and creating new jobs helping to solve some social issues as unemployment. However, food safety is crucial, thus the aim of this study was to explore the flavonoid/phenolic profiles from Z. mays l. pollen as a fingerprint for this plant identification and also to demonstrate how the method of bee pollen samples （honeybee collected pollen） is applied. For this purpose, several sources ofZ. mays l. pollen were analyzed, including corn hybrids and genetic modified samples collected at the breeding fields. For this work, samples were taken at several years from 2000 to 2012 and collected from different countries and locations, such as portugal, Mexico and Brazil. Results showed, for the first time, that the fingerprint （flavonoid/phenolic profile） for Z. mays l. pollen does not change over the time of sampling neither with the region of harvesting. The high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector （HplC/DAD） fingerprints of phenolic/flavonoid extract from Z. mays remain unchanged for all samples analyzed from different countries, hybrids and/or genetic modified plants. This is also the first study reporting these phenolic compounds not only in pollen collected directly from hybrid plants, but also in Z. mays bee pollen. The described fingerprinting method is easy, fast and accurate for the characterization of Z. mays l. pollen samples and complete microscopic analysis because it is species-specific.

目的先天性心脏病(CHD)是一种在全球范围内高发的慢性疾病,通常在出生时或出生前确诊。由于诊断以及早期药物和手术治疗的条件较好,患者的生存率达到90%,并且生存时间不断延长,面临着生活中的各种挑战。该研究探讨了不同人口统计学、临床和心理社会变量对CHD青少年和年轻成人患者的生活质量(QOl)感知、心理社会适应和精神障碍患病率的影响,评估CHD青少年和年轻成人患者的生活质量、心理社会适应和精神障碍发病率,确定哪些变量(人口统计学、临床和心理社会变量)对缓解压力、促进恢复起到积极作用,哪些变量起到不良作用。方法该研究入组了150名CHD患者(男87例,女63例),年龄12～26岁(平均年龄:17.45±3.373岁)。对参与者进行了关于社会支持、家庭教育方式、自我形象、人口统计信息和生理限制等方面的访谈。他们对标准化精神病学访谈(SADS-l)中的问题进行了回答,并填写了自我报告问卷,以进行生活质量(WHOQOl-BREF)和心理社会适应(YSR/ASR)的评估。结果所有参与者精神障碍的终身患病率为18.7%(女性25.4%,男性13.8%)。57.1%的参与者有过留级(平均1.53±0.804年)。与整体葡萄牙人相比,CHD患者的生活质量感知在社会关系、环境、身体和总体方面较好。而女性、学习成绩差、较少的社会支持、复杂性CHD、紫绀型CHD、中重度残留病灶、接受过手术和有生理限制患者生活质量感知较差。除了紫绀,所有这些变量也会引起较差的心理社会适应。结论女性CHD患者及学习成绩差且获得社会支持少的CHD患者的心理社会适应和生活质量较差。

A first search for the Ξ_(bc)^(+)J/ψΞ_(c)^(+) decay is performed by the lHCb experiment with a data sample of proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1 recorded at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Two peaking structures are seen with a local (global) significance of 4.3(2.8) and 4.1(2.4) standard deviations at masses of 6571 and 6694 MeV/c2, respectively. Upper limits are set on the Ξ+bc baryon production cross-section times the branching fraction relative to that of the B+c→J/ψD+s decay at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, in the Ξ+bc and in the B+c rapidity and transverse-momentum ranges from 2.0 to 4.5 and 0 to 20GeV/c, respectively. Upper limits are presented as a function of the Ξ+bc mass and lifetime.
