There is compelling evidence that omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) provide cardioprotective benefits. This open-label study evaluated whether an omega-3 fatty acid dietary supplement with a high EPA to DHA ratio (2.3:1) reduces triglyceride (TG) levels in mildly hypertriglyceridemic subjects. Twenty subjects, with a mean baseline TG level of 321.7 ± 108.7 mg/dL, were administered 4 g/day of Ocean BlueProfessional Omega-3 2100TM (OB) supplements. Each gram of OB contains the ethyl esters of EPA (675 mg) and DHA (300 mg). Baseline and end of study blood values were collected to assess changes in fasting levels of TG, total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C). supplementation was provided for 30 to 228 days (mean = 106 ± 50 days). Mean age at enrollment was 50.3 ± 6.3 years. Compared with baseline values, mean TG levels decreased by 48% (p = 0.001). There were no changes in TC and HDL-C levels (p = Ns);however, subjects had a significant increase in LDL-C levels (16.4%, p = 0.05). Results indicated that a high ratio of EPA to DHA (>2:1) had a statistically significant TG-lowering effect in mildly hypertriglyceridemic subjects. The lipid effects of OB are compared with those published in the literature for n-3 drugs indicated for hypertriglyceridemia (very high TG levels, > 500 mg/dL).

对土石坝心墙掺砾黏土开展模拟心墙单元小主应力方向加载的真三轴试验,首先对试样进行不同围压条件下等向固结,然后保持小主应力恒定,通过调整大主应力和中主应力,以模拟土石坝竣工后的初始三向应力状态。试验过程中保持大主应力和中主应力恒定,从小主应力方向单向加载,以模拟土石坝蓄水过程中心墙单元所经历的应力路径。试验结果与常规三轴试验以及复杂应力条件下大主应力方向真三轴加载试验结果都有显著不同。不同初始应力条件下,不同主应力方向的初始切线模量和初始切线泊松比的变化规律非常复杂,应力–应变显现出明显的各向异性。在心墙堆石坝施工过程及蓄水过程中,心墙单元所经历的应力路径明显不同,合理的土体本构模型应该对这种由于加荷路径不同所引起的不同方向模量和泊松比进行合理描述。

Peptides are becoming an important class of molecules in the pharmaceutical field. Closely related peptide-impurities in peptides are inherent to the synthesis approach and have demonstrated to potentially mask biomedical experimental results. Quorum sensing peptides are attracting high interest in R＆D and therefore a representative set of quorum sensing peptides, with a requested purity of at least 95.0%, was evaluated for their purity and nature of related impurities. In-house quality control （QC） revealed a large discrepancy between the purity levels as stated on the supplier＇s certificate of analysis and our QC results. By using our QC analysis flowchart, we demonstrated that only 44.0% of the peptides met the required purity. The main compound of one sample was even found to have a different structure compared to the desired peptide. We also found that the majority of the related impurities were lacking amino acid（s） in the desired peptide sequence. Relying on the certificates of analysis as provided by the supplier might have serious consequences for peptide research, and peptide-researchers should implement and maintain a thorough in-house QC.

Background: Resurfacing-type total hip replacement (THR) has been successfully developed over the past 50 years through collaborative efforts between engineers and surgeons. Much of the development was pursued by individuals or groups, each of which participated in adding further refinements to the implants, instruments and surgical procedures, thus minimizing the serious problems of wear, osteolysis, loosening and femoral neck fractures. The purpose of this study is to explore the development process to optimize the resurfacing total hip replacement into its current application. Methods: In the early 1980s, cementless resurfacing implants were developed using “thin shell” technology to minimize bony resection of the acetabulum and femoral head. Femoral components utilized short, non-porous coated, tapered straight stems to reduce shear stresses in the femoral neck to prevent fractures and stress shielding, while mechanically stabilizing and aligning the components. Acetabular components were anatomically designed to be recessed inside bony borders to avoid neck-cup impingement and loosening. Initially, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was used as a bearing, but due to high levels of wear and osteolysis, it was replaced by wear-resistant highly crossed-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) in 2008. Results: Use of HXLPE as a bearing material in both Co-Cr-Mo and titanium nitride (TiN) ceramic-coated resurfacing implants has led to excellent patient outcomes for more than 10 years. In clinical studies, 87% of patients with bilateral total hip replacements prefer their resurfacing-type total hip over their stem-type total hip. The author’s own personal resurfacing total hips, now at 8 and 5 years, respectively, provide “normal” function and no radiographic osteolysis. Flight Vehicle Performance and Aerodynamic Control is designed to serve as a text for either an 11-week or a 16-week course at the sophomore level. It explains typical methods used to estimate aircraft performance, the theoretical basis of these methods, and how various parameters derived from the aircraft geometry can be used to estimate the requirements of control surfaces and the aerodynamic forces required to actuate these surfaces. This book includes time-tested computer programs that perform the analyses in a manner that reduces student error and improves result accuracy. Because the source code is given, users with a FORTRAN compiler can modify the program to suit particular needs. The major advantage of the software is that more realistic problems may be treated and the effects of parametric programs are more accurate than calculators. The programs are available as executables for Windows machines as well as in AsCII source code versions that can be readily compiled and then executed on Unix, Linux, and Macintosh machines, and on mainframes.
