Remission endpoints in ulcerative colitis: A systematic review

AIM To summarize the current consensus on the defnition of remission and the endpoints employed in clinical *** bibliogragraphic search was performed from 1946 to 2016 sing online databases （National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central Medline, OVID SP MEDLINE, OVID EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and Conference Abstracts） with key words：（“ulcerative colitis”） AND （“ulcerative colitis endoscopic index of severity” OR “UCEIS”） AND （“remission”） as well as （“ulcerative colitis”） AND （“ulcerative colitis disease activity index”） OR “UCDAI” OR “UC disease activity index” OR “Sutherland index”） AND （“remission”）.RESULTSThe search returned 37 and 116 articles for the UCEIS and UCDAI respectively. For the UCEIS, 12 articles were cited in the final analysis of which 9 validation studies have been identified. Despite the UCEIS has been more extensively validated in all three aspects （validity, responsiveness and reliability）, it has been little employed to monitor disease in randomised clinical trials. For the UCDAI, 37 articles were consider-ed for the final analysis. Although the UCDAI is only partially validated, 29 randomised clinical trials were acknowledged to use the UCDAI to determine endpoints and disease remission, though no clear protocol was *** the UCEIS has been more widely validated than the UCDAI, it has not been refected in the moni-toring of disease activity in clinical trials. Conversely, the UCDAI has been used in numerous large clinical trials to defne their endpoints and disease remission, however, it is challenging to determine the best possible outcomes due to a lack of homogeneity of the clinical trial protocols. Before determining a gold standard index, international agreement on remission is urgently needed to advance patient care.

The present article outlines progress made in designing an intelligent information system for automatic management and knowledge discovery in large numeric and scientific databases, with a validating application to the CAST-NEONS environmental databases used for ocean modeling and prediction. We describe a discovery-learning process (Automatic Data Analysis System) which combines the features of two machine learning techniques to generate sets of production rules that efficiently describe the observational raw data contained in the database. Data clustering allows the system to classify the raw data into meaningful conceptual clusters, which the system learns by induction to build decision trees, from which are automatically deduced the production rules.

In this paper, we consider the perturbation analysis of linear time-invariant systems, which arise from the linear optimal control in continuous-time. We provide a method to compute condition numbers of continuous-time linear time-invariant systems. It solves the perturbed linear time-invariant systems via Riccati differential equations and continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations in finite and infinite time horizons. We derive the explicit expressions of measuring the perturbation bounds of condition numbers with respect to the solution of the linear time-invariant systems. Furthermore, condition numbers and their upper bounds of Riccati differential equations and continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations are also discussed. Numerical simulations show the sharpness of the perturbation bounds computed via the proposed methods.

The recharge of non-potable water into a drinking water aquifer is one means to overcome decreasing groundwater supplies and maintain availability of these resources for current and future generations. However, health concerns exist regarding the use of waters of “impaired quality” such as reclaimed wastewater for aquifer recharge. The objective of this study is to evaluate the potential risk to drinking water from the use of reclaimed water for recharge purposes using computational modeling with MODFLOW and MT3D groundwater transport simulation based on an actual situation using rotavirus as a surrogate. The results from the simulation showed that after seven months, the risk of contamination based on concentration contours from the injection well to the production wells was stabilized below 10-6.

Collagen is the major structural fiber found in mammalian tissues. It is a protein in the form of a triple-helix which is found in several subfamilies, the most abundant of which is the fiber forming group containing Types I, II and III. Type I collagen is found in tendons, skin, cornea, bone, lung and vessel walls. This collagen is thought to give rise to the high tensile strengths of collagen fibers in tissues;in addition, it is actively involved in other physiologic processes such mechanotransduction. However, the non-linear mechanical behavior and viscoelasticity of collagen fibers make analysis of the mechanical properties of tissues complicated. Mechanistically, during mechanical loading, a tensional increase in the D period is observed with increasing strain that is associated with: 1) molecular elongation at the triple-helical level of structure;2) increases in the gap distance between the end of one triple-helix and the start of the next one in the microfibril;and 3) molecular slippage. In this paper, we discuss the relationship between collagen hierarchical structure and its non-linear mechanical properties. Using vibrational analysis and optical coherence tomography, it is hoped that the mechanical properties of collagenous tissues can be studied in vivo in order to better understand tissue mechanics and to be better able to offer early diagnosis and differentiation of different disease states.

Economic Impact of Mutant Cassava （Manihot Species） for Agricultural Improvement in Ghana

The importance of agricultural innovations for raising the living standards of farmers has received substantial attention from the economic and political communities. In Ghana, cassava serves as an important source of calorie and cash crop. Production constraints such as the cassava mosaic disease caused by virus have limit farmers access to productivity potentials and marketing. Breeding efforts attempting to address this constraints have had some success such as the mutant Tech Bankye virus resistant variety. This research, therefore, analysed the impact of some production input on mutant cassava productivity growth in Ghana with the use of Cobb-Douglas production function. Results show that farmers cultivate the mutant variety in addition to other traditional varieties to averse risking in marketing and income. The average cost of production of the mutant variety is higher compared to that of the traditional variety. Eighty percent of the farmers complained difficulty in accessing market for the mutant variety because it could not replace the traditional variety in terms of its texture for the local native ＂fufu＂ production and ＂ampesi＂ and also deteriorate quickly in storage. However, for industrial production of ＂gari＂ and starch, the mutant is the best. Both the mutant cassava and the traditional varieties showed increasing returns to scale, however, the returns to scale of the mutant variety were lower compared to that of the traditional variety. Also, the opportunity cost of forgoing the traditional varieties to cultivating the mutant variety was very high making adopted farmers hesitant to continue it cultivation.

Analysis of Mechanical Behavior of Composite Tissues Using Vibrational Optical Coherence Tomography

Extracellular matrices (ECMs) found in vertebrate tissues are fiber reinforced composite materials that prevent premature mechanical failure, store, transmit, and dissipate mechanical energy generated by the musculoskeletal system. We have developed a new method using optical cohesion tomography and vibrational analysis to non-destructively and non-invasively measure the mechanical properties of composite tissues and polymeric materials. In addition, this method can be used to measure the moduli of individual components of composite materials and perform “mechanical spectroscopy” on materials. In addition, we propose that measurement of the resonant frequency of a material minimizes the viscoelastic behavior of a composite material. This approach simplifies the analysis of mechanical behavior of polymers and others materials that demonstrate time-dependence to their properties.

An Eigen-Normal Approach for 3D Mesh Watermarking Using Support Vector Machines

The use of support vector machines （SVM） for watermarking of 3D mesh models is investigated. SVMs have been widely explored for images, audio, and video watermarking but to date the potential of SVMs has not been explored in the 3D watermarking domain. The proposed approach utilizes SVM as a binary classifier for the selection of vertices for watermark embedding. The SVM is trained with feature vectors derived from the angular difference between the eigen normal and surface normals of a 1-ring neighborhood of vertices taken from normalized 3D mesh models. The SVM learns to classify vertices as appropriate or inappropriate candidates for modification in order to accommodate the watermark. Experimental results verify that the proposed algorithm is imperceptible and robust against attacks such as mesh smoothing, cropping and noise addition.

Allografts have been used in a variety of applications to augment as well as replace tissues throughout the body. A number of steps are involved in selection, harvesting, processing and testing of dermal allografts. Grafts can be obtained that are: free of antibodies to viruses and low in viral titers. Cellular material can be eliminated from the tissue and the product becomes almost exclusively a collagen fiber network. The purpose of this paper is to examine the changes in collagen structure and properties that occur during processing of decellularized dermis. The results indicate that collagen fiber swelling occurs during processing although the product preserves the native collagen banding pattern at the fibrillar structural level. Fiber swelling and decreased collagen deformability of processed dermis, may lead to stress concentration at the implant-tissue interface and up-regulation of mechanotransduction. This may lead to premature mechanical failure due to creation of a chronic inflammatory condition at the implant-tissue interface. It is suggested that all dermal allografts be oriented such that Langer’s lines of the implant match those of the host tissue, and that wound closure by suturing be done under conditions that preserve the normal tension in skin in order to minimize implant-interfacial failure.
