Performance of evolutionary optimized machine learning for modeling total organic carbon in core samples of shale gas fields

Rock samples' TOc content is the best indicator of the organic matter in source rocks. The origin rock samples' analysis is used to calculate it manually by specialists. This method requires time and resources because it relies on samples from many well intervals in source rocks. Therefore, research has been do.e to aid this effort. Machine learning algorithms can estimate total organic carbon instead of well logs and stratigraphic studies. In light of these efforts, the current work present a study on automating the total organic carbon estimation using machine learning approaches improved by an evolutionary methodo.ogy to give the model flexibility and precision. Genetic algorithms, differential evolution, particle swarm optimization, grey wolf optimization, artificial bee colony, and evolution strategies were used to improve machine learning models to predict TOc. The six metaheuristics were integrated into four machine learning methods: extreme learning machine, elastic net linear model, linear support vector regression, and multivariate adaptive regression splines. core samples from the Yudo.g-Nan shale gas field, located in the sichuan basin, were used to evaluate the hybrid strategy. The findings show that combining machine learning models with an evolutionary algorithms in a hybrid fashion produce flexible models that accurately predict TOc. The results show that, independent of the metaheuristic used to guide the model selection, optimized extreme learning machines attained the best performance scores according to six metrics. such hybrid models can be used in exploratory geological research,particularly for unconventional oil and gas resources.

In crop plants, various environmental stresses affect the balance of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus(c:N:P), leading to biochemical and physiological alterations and reductions in yield. silicon(si) is a beneficial element that alleviates plant stress. Most studies involving silicon have focused on physiological responses, such as improvements in photosynthetic processes, water use efficiency, and antioxidant defense systems. But recent research suggests that stressed plants facing either limited or excessive resources(water, light, nutrients, and toxic elements), strategically employ si to maintain c:N:P homeostasis, thereby minimizing biomass losses. Understanding the role of si in mitigating the impact of abiotic stresses on plants by regulating c:N:P homeostasis holds great potential for advancing sustainable agricultural practices in crop production. This review presents recent advances in characterizing the influence of environmental stresses on c:N:P homeostasis, as well as the role of si in preserving c:N:P equilibrium and attenuating biological damage associated with abiotic stress. It underscores the beneficial effects of si in sustaining c:N:P homeostasis and increasing yield via improved nutritional efficiency and stress mitigation.

We present an engineered version of the divide-and-conquer algorithm for finding the closest pair of points, within a given set of points in the XY-plane. For this version of the algorithm we show that only two pairwise comparisons are required in the combine step, for each point that lies in the 25-wide vertical slab. The correctness of the algorithm is shown for all Minkowski distances with p ≥ 1. We also show empirically that, although the time complexity of the algorithm is still O（n lgn）, the reduction in the total number of comparisons leads to a significant reduction in the total execution time, for inputs with size sufficiently large.

During the production of nitrile rubber, significant amounts of nitrogen in the form of ammonium are generated in the wastewater. The discharge of this high-nitrogen wastewater can lead to serious environmental issues, including eutrophication, disruption of aquatic ecosystems, and groundwater contamination. To mitigate these impacts, this research explored the bioremediation capabilities of the macroalgae Ulva lactuca (chlorophyta) for removing nitrogen from nitrile rubber production wastewater. The study employed single-phase and Michaelis-Menten decay models based on ammonium consumption, using various dilutions of wastewater to identify the optimal concentration for treatment. The physiological state of the macroalgae was monitored by measuring the photosynthetic capacity and specific growth rate during the experiments. In the presence of U. lactuca, ammonium concentrations decreased in all treatment groups, confirming that the ammonium kinetics conformed to both applied models. Our results show that U. lactuca effectively reduces ammonium concentrations, with an approximate removal rate of 0.020 µM·g−1·min−1 across different wastewater concentrations (70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%). Notably, the treatments with 70%, 80%, and 90% wastewater strength achieved about 67% reduction in ammonium, demonstrating the alga’s capacity to treat high-nitrogen wastewater. The photosynthetic performance of U. lactuca initially declined in control conditions but stabilized across all treatments, highlighting its adaptability. The kinetic analysis using the Michaelis-Menten model indicated a Vmax of 1342 μM·g−1·DMh−1, suggesting a robust capacity for ammonium uptake when fully saturated. Our study underscores the potential of Ulva lactuca as a cost-effective and efficient agent for wastewater bioremediation, particularly in settings with high nitrogen loads.

construction activities often involve removal of topsoil and compaction of the exposed soil by heavy equipments. such compacted soils with low organic matter can lead to low infiltration and poor vegetation establishment. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of tillage (shallow till) and compost on soil physical and biological properties in a hydroseeded lawn as a post-construction best management practice for soil compaction remediation. The experimental site received a total of four land treatments in five replicated trials and it was hydroseeded with common Bermuda grass: 1) No Tillage + compost (NT-c), 2) No Tillage + No compost (NT-Nc;control), 3) Tillage + compost (T-c), and 4) Tillage + No compost (T-Nc). Bulk density (BD), infiltration rate (IR), and wet aggregate stability (WAs) in each plot were measured to assess soil physical properties while soil organic matter (sOM) and enzyme activity (β-glucosidase, acid-phosphatase, and alkaline-phosphatase) were measured for soil biological properties. Over a 15-months of monitoring period, the shallow tillage loosened the soil initially, but its effect on BD without compost was diminished to control plot level (NT-Nc) within 4 months after hydroseeding. Both tillage and compost led to an increase in IR, and it remained higher than control by 2 - 3 times throughout the observation period. The WAs and β-glucosidase activity decreased in tilled plot unless there was compost application. Turfgrass showed greener leaves and aggregated roots in the compost-amended plots (NT-c and T-c). Our results suggest that compost application plays a key role in improving soil physical and biological properties in hydroseeded lawns from construction sites.
