The tooth enamel development gene, enamelin （ENAM）, showed evidence of positive selection during a genome-wide scan of human and primate DNA for signs of adaptive evolution. The current study examined the hypothesis that a single-nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） C14625T （rs7671281） in the ENAM gene identified in the genome-wide scan is associated with a change in enamel phenotype. African Americans were selected as the target population, as they have been reported to have a target SNP frequency of approximately 50%, whereas non-Africans are predicted to have a 96% SNP frequency. Digital radiographs and DNA samples from 244 teeth in 133 subjects were analysed, and enamel thickness was assessed in relation to SNP status, controlling for age, sex, tooth number and crown length. Crown length was found to increase with molar number, and females were found to have thicker enamel. Teeth with larger crowns also had thicker enamel, and older subjects had thinner enamel. Linear regression and generalized estimating equations were used to investigate the relationship between enamel thickness of the mandibular molars and ENAM SNP status; enamel in subjects with the derived allele was significantly thinner （P= 0.040） when the results were controlled for sex, age, tooth number and crown length. The derived allele demonstrated a recessive effect on the phenotype. The data indicate that thinner dental enamel is associated with the derived ENAM genotype. This is the first direct evidence of a dental gene implicated in human adaptive evolution as having a phenotypic effect on an oral structure.

A photonic lab on a chip(PhLOC),comprising a solid-state light emitter(SSLE)aligned with a biofunctionalized optofluidic multiple internal reflection(MIR)system,is *** SSLE is obtained by filling a microfluidic structure with a phenyltrimethoxysilane(PhTMOS)aqueous sol solution containing a fluorophore organic *** curing,the resulting xerogel solid structure retains the emitting properties of the fluorophore,which is evenly distributed in the xerogel *** studies demonstrate that after a total dose(at λ5365 nm)greater than 24 j cm^(-2),the xerogel emission decay is only 4.1%.To re-direct the emitted light,the SSLE includes two sets of air mirrors that surround the *** mapping of the SSLE demonstrates that alignment variations of 150 mm(between the SSLE and the external pumping light source)provide fluctuations in emitted light smaller than 5%.After this verification,the SSLE is monolithically implemented with a MIR,forming the *** performance is assessed by measuring quinolone yellow,obtaining a limit of detection(LOD)of(0.6060.01)***,the MIR is selectively biofunctionalized with horseradish peroxidase(HRP)for the detection of hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))target analyte,obtaining a LOD of(0.760.1)μM for H_(2)O_(2),confirming,for the first time,that solid-state xerogel-based emitters can be massively implemented in biofunctionalized PhLOCs.

Interaction of the α2A domain of integrin with small collagen fragments

Recent years have seen scholars in a wide range of disciplines re-evaluate the history of the Society of jesus. In 1997, a group of scholars convened a major international conference to discuss the world of the jesuits between 1540 and 1773 (the year of its suppression by papal edict). This meeting led to the creation of the first volume in this series, The jesuits, which examined the worldwide jesuit undertaking in such fields as music, art, architecture, devotional writing, mathematics, physics, astronomy, natural history, public performance, and education, with special attention to the jesuits''interaction with non-European *** second volume, following a second conference in 2002, continues in a similar path as its predecessor, complementing the regional coverage with contributions on the Flemish and Iberian provinces, on the missions in japan, and in post-Suppression Russia and the United States. The performing arts, like theatre and music, are broadly treated, and, in addition to continued attention to painting and architecture, the volume contains essays on a range of objets d''art, including statuary, reliquaries, and alter pieces - as well as on gardens, mechanical clocks, and related automata. Other themes include finances, natural theology, censorship within the jesuit order, and the Society''s relationship to *** most important, the volume gives particular attention to the eighteenth century, the''age of disasters''for the jesuits - the negative papal ruling on Chinese Rites, the destruction the of Paraguay Reductions, and the suppressions of the order that began in Portugal and that culminated in the general Suppression of 1773. With contributions from distinguished scholars from a dozen different countries, The jesuits, II continues in the illustrious tradition of its predecessor to make an important contribution to religious memory.

We here present a detailed study of the ligand-receptor interactions between single and triple-helical strands of collagen and the α2A domain of integrin(α2A),providing valuable new insights into the mechanisms and dynamics of collagen-integrin binding at a sub-molecular *** occurrence of single and triple-helical strands of the collagen fragments was scrutinized with atom force microscopy(AFM)*** interactions of the triple-stranded fragments comparable to those of collagen can only be detected for the 42mer triple-helical collagen-like peptide under study(which contains 42 amino acid residues per strand)by solid phase assays as well as by surface plasmon resonance(SPR)***,changes in NMR signals during titration and characteristic saturation transfer difference(STD)NMR signals are also detectable whenα2A is added to a solution of the 21mer single-stranded collagen *** dynamics(MD)simulations employing different sets of force field parameters were applied to study the interaction between triple-helical or single-stranded collagen fragments withα*** is remarkable that even single-stranded collagen fragments can form various complexes withα2A showing significant differences in the complex stability with identical *** results of MD simulations are in agreement with the signal alterations in our NMR experiments,which are indicative of the formation of weak complexes between single-stranded collagen andα2A in *** results provide useful information concerning possible interactions ofα2A with small collagen fragments that are of relevance to the design of novel therapeutic A-domain inhibitors.

Bacterial infection and osteogenic integration are the two main problems that cause severe complications after surgeries. In this study, the antibacterial and osteogenic properties were simultaneously introduced in biomaterials, where copper nanoparticles(Cu NPs) were generated by in situ reductions of Cu ions into a mussel-inspired hyperbranched polyglycerol(MI-h PG) coating via a simple dip-coating *** hyperbranched polyglycerol with 10 % catechol groups’ modification presents excellent antifouling property, which could effectively reduce bacteria adhesion on the surface. In this work, polycaprolactone(PCL) electrospun fiber membrane was selected as the substrate, which is commonly used in biomedical implants in bone regeneration and cardiovascular stents because of its good biocompatibility and easy post-modification. The as-fabricated Cu NPs-incorporated PCL membrane [PCL-(MI-h PG)-Cu NPs]was confirmed with effective antibacterial performance via in vitro antibacterial tests against Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus), Escherichia coli(E. coli), and multi-resistant E. coli. In addition, the in vitro results demonstrated that osteogenic property of PCL-(MI-h PG)-Cu NPs was realized by upregulating the osteoblast-related gene expressions and protein activity. This study shows that antibacterial and osteogenic properties can be balanced in a surface coating by introducing Cu NPs.

In this study,310 destructively sampled plots were used to develop two equation systems for the three main pine species in NW Spain(***;*** and ***):one for estimating loads of understorey fuel components by size and condition(live and dead)and another one for forest floor *** systems of equations were simultaneously fitted for estimating fuel loads using overstorey,understorey and forest floor variables as *** systems of equations included both the effect of pine species and the effect of understorey compositions dominated by ferns-brambles or by woody species,due to their obvious structural and physiological *** general,the goodness-of-fit statistics indicated that the estimates were reasonably robust and accurate for all of the fuel *** best results were obtained for total understorey vegetation,total forest floor and raw humus fuel loads,with more than 76%of the observed variability explained,whereas the poorest results were obtained for coarse fuel loads of understory vegetation with a 53%of observed variability *** reduce the overall costs associated with the field inventories necessary for operational use of the models,the additive systems were fitted again using only overstorey variables as potential *** relationships for fine(<6 mm)and total understorey vegetation and total forest floor fuel loads were obtained,indicating the complexity of the forest overstorey-understorey and overstorey-forest floor ***,these models explained around 52%of the observed ***,equations estimating the total understorey vegetation and the total forest floor fuel loads based only on canopy cover were *** models explained only 26%-32%of the observed variability;however,their main advantage is that although understorey vegetation in forested landscapes is largely invisible to remote sensing,canopy cover can be estimated with moderate accuracy,allowin

Introduction: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence(SCD) remains difficult to diagnose despite advances in high-resolution computed tomography(HRCT) imaging. We hypothesize possible associations between gross temporal bone anatomy and sub-millimeter pathology of the semicircular canals, which may supplement imaging and clinical suspicion. This pilot study investigates differences in gross temporal bone anatomic parameters between temporal bones with and without ***: Records were reviewed for 18 patients referred to an otology clinic complaining of dizziness with normal caloric stimulation results indicative of non-vestibular findings. Eleven patients had normal temporal bone anatomy while seven had SCD. Three-dimensional reconstruction of every patient's temporal bone anatomy was created from patient-specific computational tomography images. Surface area(SA),volume(V), and SA to V ratios(SA:V) were computed across temporal bone anatomical ***: SCD temporal bones have significantly smaller V, and larger temporal bone SA. Mean(±SD) V was 21,484 ± 3,921 mm^3 in temporal bones without SCD and 16,343 ± 34,471 mm^3 for those with SCD. Their respective SA were 13,733 ± 1,603 mm^2 and 18,073 ± 3,002 mm^*** bone airspaces and lateral semicircular canals did not demonstrate significant differences where SCD was and was not present. Plots of MV_(warm)response against computed SCD temporal bone anatomic parameters(SA, V and SA:V) showed moderate to strong correlations:temporal bone SA:V(r= 0.64), temporal bone airspace V(r= 0.60), temporal bone airspace SA(r= 0.55), LSCC SA(r= 0.51), and LSCC-toTM Distance(r= 0.65).Conclusions: This analysis demonstrated that SCD is associated with decreased temporal bone volume and density. The defect in SCD does not appear to influence caloric responses.
