The study of microbial hydrocarbons removal is of great importance for the development of future bioremediation *** this study,w. evaluated the removal of a gaseous mixture containing toluene,m-xylene,ethylbenzene,cyclohexane,butane,pentane,hexane and heptane in aerated stirred bioreactors inoculated w.th Rhodococcus erythropolis and operated under non-sterile *** the real-time measurement of hydrocarbons,a novel systematic approachw.s implemented using Selected-Ion Flow.TubeMass Spectrometry(SIFTMS).The effect of the carbon source(~9.5 ppmv)on(i)the bioreactors’performance(BR1:dosed w.th only cyclohexane as a single hydrocarbon versus BR2:dosed w.th a mixture of the 8 hydrocarbons)and(ii)the evolution of microbial communities over time w.re *** results show.d that cyclohexane reached a maximum removal efficiency(RE)of 53%±4%in *** BR2,almost complete removal of toluene,m-xylene and ethylbenzene,being the most w.ter-soluble and easy-to-degrade carbon sources,w.s *** below.32%w.re obtained for the remaining *** exposing the microbial consortium to only the five most recalcitrant hydrocarbons,REs betw.en 45%±5%and 98%±1%w.re *** addition,w. observed that airborne microorganisms populated the bioreactors and that the type of carbon source influenced the microbial communities *** abundance of species belonging to the genus Rhodococcus w.s below.10%in all bioreactors at the end of the *** w.rk provides fundamental insights to understand the complex behavior of gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures in bioreactors,along w.th a systematic approach for the development of SIFT-MS methods.

The study of speciation genetics is primarily concerned w.th identifying the genetic traits that allow.divergent selec- tion to overcome the homogenizing effects of gene flow. Felsenstein review.d this race betw.en gene flow.and selection, con- cluding that speciation w.th gene flow.w.s unlikely under a ＂tw.-allele model＂（w.ere tw. traits w.re necessary for reproductive isolation） but that divergence could occur quite easily under a ＂one-allele model.＂ Despite this finding, much of the sympatric speciation research involving phytophagous insects has relied on a tw.-trait model, w.ere insects evolve both preferences for and increased performance on novel host plants. Philopatry （a tendency to remain w.ere one w.s born） is know. to occur in phyto- phagous insects and is a single trait isolation mechanism. How.ver, it is traditionally invoked as simply augmenting reproductive isolation. Species in the Enchenopa binotata complex are believed to have speciated in sympatry. They exhibit host plant prefe- rences, host specific performance advantages and strong philopatry. w. experimentally shifted E. binotata to evolutionarily novel host plants. Previous research has demonstrated that the experimental population of insects possesses genetic variation in prefe- rence and performance to the novel host. The degree of philopatry at mating and egg-laying w.s assayed for the first four years under full choice conditions. Host plant preference and performance w.s assayed after eight years. Philopatry w.s an immediate and strong isolating mechanism, w.ile preference for and performance on the novel host lagged. w. therefore suggest that philo- patry may be a more important mechanism in the early stages of a host shift than previously believed [Current Zoology 59 （5）： 658-666, 2013].

Axonal regeneration follow.ng surgical nerve repair is slow.and often incomplete,resulting in poor functional recovery w.ich sometimes contributes to lifelong ***,there are no FDA-approved therapies available to promote nerve *** accelerates axonal regeneration,but systemic side effects presently outw.igh its potential benefits for peripheral nerve *** authors describe herein a biodegradable polyurethane-based drug delivery system for the sustained local release of tacrolimus at the nerve repair site,w.th suitable properties for scalable production and clinical application,aiming to promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery w.th minimal systemic drug *** is encapsulated into co-axially electrospun polycarbonate-urethane nanofibers to generate an implantable nerve w.ap that releases therapeutic doses of bioactive tacrolimus over 31 *** and drug loading are adj.stable for applications in small and large caliber nerves,and the w.ap degrades w.thin 120 days into biocompatible *** released from the nerve w.ap promotes axon elongation in vitro and accelerates nerve regeneration and functional recovery in preclinical nerve repair models w.ile off-target systemic drug exposure is reduced by 80%compared w.th systemic *** its surgical suitability and preclinical efficacy and safety,this system may provide a readily translatable approach to support axonal regeneration and recovery in patients undergoing nerve surgery.

Understanding the structural characteristics and grow.h mechanism（s） are essen-tial for generating core-shell nano-heterostructures w.th distinctive properties. Especially in lanthanide-based nanocrystals, rational design of the core-shell composition can be utilized to enhance/tune the optical properties of the final nanostructure, or can be used to integrate multiple functional applications （e.g., luminescent/magnetic）. In this article, w. review.the progress in our current understanding of the epitaxial shell grow.h in sodium lanthanide fluoride （NaLnF4） nanocrystals. In order to understand epitaxial shell grow.h the core nanocrystals have to be uniform, and to date the synthesis of high quality near uniform size/shape dispersion controlled synthesis of lanthanide-based nanocrystals has been achieved mainly w.th this class of nanocrystals. The progress in core-shell synthesis and the epitaxial shell grow.h mechanism in this class of nanocrystals （NaLnF4） are review.d, and a general perspective is provided on the core-shell morphology based on different characterization techniques. w.ile there has been tremendous progress in studying the impact of core-shell structures in various functional applications, this review.also highlights, in our view. the still limited understanding of w.ys to control the core-shell morphology and it emphasizes some important, unansw.red questions that remain to be addressed to maximize their performance.

Spectro-microscopy, a combination of fluorescence microscopy w.th spatially resolved spectroscopic techni- ques, provides new.and exciting tools for functional cell biology in living organisms. This review.focuses on recent devel- opments in spectro-microscopic applications for the investigation of living plant cells in their native tissue context. The application of spectro-microscopic methods led to the recent discovery of a fast signal response pathw.y for the brassi- nosteroide receptor BRI1 in the plasma membrane of living plant cells. Moreover, the competence of different plant cell types to respond to environmental or endogenous stimuli w.s determined in vivo by correlation analysis of different optical and spectroscopic readouts such as fluorescence lifetime （FLT）. Furthermore, a new.spectro-microscopic technique, fluorescence intensity decay shape analysis microscopy （FIDSAM）, has been developed. FIDSAM is capable of imaging low. expressed fluorophore-tagged proteins at high spatial resolution and precludes the misinterpretation of autofluorescence artifacts. In addition, FIDSAM provides a very effective and sensitive tool on the basis of F6rster resonance energy transfer （FRET） for the qualitative and quantitative determination of protein-protein interaction. Finally, w. report on the quan- titative analysis of the photosystem I and II （PSI/PSII） ratio in the chloroplasts of living Arabidopsis plants at room tem- perature, using high-resolution, spatially resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. w.th this technique, it w.s not only possible to measure PSI/PSII ratios, but also to demonstrate the differential competence of w.ld-type and carbohydrate-deficient plants to adapt the PSI/PSII ratio to different light conditions. In summary, the information content of standard microscopic images is extended by several dimensions by the use of spectro-microscopic approaches. This paper seeks to examine a particular aspect of the communicological dynamic of play and boundaries. w.rking from an existential concept of play as creative, dialogic expression （and as the vehicle of new.experience and new.thought）, I w.ll explore the human experience of limits, borders, and scaffolds. The existence of a grammar is vital to the function of both a language and a cultural system. But, as speakers and participants, w. do not learn the language from the outside in. That is, w. start speaking the language before w. know.anything about it. As infants, w. hear sounds and observe gestures and w. imitate them. w.thin this fold, w. gain consciousness of an outside. Mastery of grammars and codes enable us to enter w.rlds seemingly closed off by boundaries, seemingly transforming alien and outsider status into group membership and inhabitant. As such, this paper opens up the question of w.at it means to be outside and inside. The standpoint of this paper is semiotic, phenomenological, and psychoanalytic. To this end, the essay w.ll closely engage w.th the thinking of Merlean-Ponty, Deleuze, Foucault, and Kristeva.

The effects of adrenalectomy and corticosterone supplementation on the neurotoxicity of trimethyltin (TMT) w.re tested. CD-1 mice w.th or w.thout adrenalectomy w.re inj.cted w.th TMT at a dose of 3.0mg/kg body w.. At 48h post-TMT administration, the animals w.re killed for pathological examination. It w.s found that the adrenalectomized animals developed even more severe lesions in the hippocampal formation (fascia dentata granule cells) than the intact animals. w.en animals w.re given a supplement of corticosterone pellets at doses of 0.15, 1.5, and 7.5mg, there w.s a reduction of lesion development. Total alleviation of pathology w.s seen at the tw. higher doses of supplementation. Our present investigation strongly indicates that there may be a close and important interrelationship betw.en TMT-induced neurotoxicity and adrenal function. 1989 Academic Press, Inc.

Long-grain rice cultivars Cocodrie, w.lls, and XP 723 grow. in three locations （Hazen, MO; Essex and New.ort, AR, USA）, and medium-grain rice cultivars Bengal and XP 713 grow. in tw. locations （j.nesboro and Lodge Corner, AR, USA）, w.re harvested and assayed for susceptibility to Rhyzopertha dominica （F.）（Coleoptera： Bostrichidae）, the lesser grain borer, and Sitophilus oryzae （L.）（Coleoptera： Curculionidae）, the rice w.evil, on rice held at 27℃, 57% and 75% relative humidity （RH）. Separate samples from the same harvest lots w.re also analyzed for the physical characteristics of brow. rice yield, percentage w.ole kernels and kernel thickness. Progeny production and feeding damage of R. dominica w.re significantly different among long-grain cultivars w.thin tw. of the three locations （P 〈 0.05）, but not for location or RH （P ≥ 0.05）, w.ile progeny production of S. oryzae w.s different among cultivars, location, and RH （P 〈 0.05）. On medium-grain rice, both cultivar and location w.re significant for progeny production of R. dominica, but not RH, w.ile cultivar and RH w.re significant for progeny production of S. oryzae, but not location. On both rice types, feeding damage of R. dominica follow.d the same trends and w.s alw.ys strongly positively correlated w.th progeny production （P 〈 0.05）, but for S. oryzae there w.re several instances in w.ich progeny production w.s not correlated w.th feeding damage （P ≥ 0.05）. Physical characteristics of both rice types w.re statistically significant （P 〈 0.01） but actual numerical differences w.re extremely small, and w.re generally not correlated w.th progeny production of either species. Results indicate that the location in w.ich a particular rice cultivar is grow., along w.th its characteristics, could affect susceptibility of the rice to R. dominica and S. oryzae.
