Inheritance of marsh spot disease resistance in cranberry common bean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Common bean(Phaseolus vulgaris) is an annual legume crop that is grown worldwide for its edible dry seeds and tender pods. Marsh spot(MS) of the seeds is a physio-genic stress disease affecting seed quality in beans. Studies have suggested that this disease involves a nutritional disorder caused by manganese deficiency, but the inheritance of resistance to this disease has not been reported. A biparental genetic population composed of 138 recombinant inbred lines(RILs) was developed from a cross between an MS resistant cultivar ‘Cran09’ and an MS susceptible cultivar ‘Messina’. The 138 RILs and their two parents were evaluated for MS resistance during five consecutive years from 2015 to 2019 in sandy and heavy clay soils in Morden, Manitoba, Canada. The MS incidence(MSI) and the MS resistance index(MSRI) representing disease severity were shown to be both highly correlated heritable traits that had high broad-sense heritability values(H;) of 86.5% and 83.2%, respectively. No significant differences for MSI and MSRI were observed between the two soil types in all five-(MSI) or four-year(MSRI) data collection, but significant correlations among years were observed despite MS resistance was moderately affected by year. The MSIs and MSRIs displayed a right-skewed distribution, indicating a mixed genetic model involving a few major genes and polygenes. Using the joint segregation analysis method, the same four major genes with additive-epistasis effects showed the best fit for both traits, explaining 84.4% and85.3% of the phenotypic variance for MSI and MSRI, respectively. For both traits, the M1, M2, M3 and m4 acted as the favorable(resistant) alleles for the four genes where M and m represent two alleles of each gene. However, due to epistatic effects, only the individuals of the M1 M2 M3 M4 haplotype appeared to be highly resistant, whereas those of the m1 m2 m3 M4 haplotype were the most susceptible. Influence of Different Nitrogen Sources on the Growth and Yield of Three Varieties of Okra (<i>Abelmoschus esculentus</i>) in kabba, kogi State, Nigeria

Experiments were carried out at the Research Site of Horticultural Section, kabba College of Agriculture to investigate the influence of different nitrogen sources on the growth and yield of three varieties of okra. The experiment was laid out in split block design with varieties as main plots (Lady Finger “LF”, LD88 and Okele (local cultivar)) and different nitrogen sources as sub plots (Urea (108.7 kgN/ha), poultry manure (PM) (3.01 t/ha = 108.7 kgN/ha) and cow dung (CWD) (3.83 t/ha = 108.7 kgN/ha). The treatment combinations were as follows LD88 + Urea, LD88 + PM, LD88 + CWD, LF + Urea, LF + PM and LF + CWD, Okele + Urea (108.7 kg/ha), Okele + PM and Okele + CWD. Growth parameters determined were plant height (cm), leafarea (cm2), number of leaves produced, stem girth (cm), internode length (cm) and days to 50% flowering and podding. Flower characters taken were number of flowers produced per plant, number of flowers aborted per plant, and number of pods produced per plant. Yield characters determined were individual pod weight (g), pod length (cm), pod diameter (cm) and pod yield (t/ha). The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means compared using the least significant difference (LSD) at a probability level of 5%. Urea application and poultry manure had significantly different effects compared with cow dung treated plots for the parameters of growth and yield. Highest mean value was observed with urea application. This was followed by poultry manure application. The cultivar Lady’s finger performed better according to the data for number of pods and fresh pod weight. This was followed by the LD88 cultivars. Okra grew taller and had bigger stem girth, greater number of leaves, larger leaf area and higher number of pods and fresh pod weight with urea application. Cultivar Lady’s finger performed better than the other cultivars in most measured parameters. It is therefore recommended that lady finger should be grown by farmers in the

Fluorescent studies of living plant cells such as confocal microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging often suffer from a strong autofluorescent background contribution that significantly reduces the dynamic image contrast and the quantitative access to sub-cellular processes at high spatial resolution. Here, we present a novel technique--fluorescence intensity decay shape analysis microscopy （FIDSAM） to enhance the dynamic contrast of a fluorescence image of at least one order of magnitude. The method is based on the analysis of the shape of the fluorescence intensity decay （fluorescence lifetime curve） and benefits from the fact that the decay patterns of typical fluorescence label dyes strongly differ from emission decay curves of autofluorescent sample areas. Using FIDSAM, we investigated Arabidopsis thaliana hypocotyl cells in their tissue environment, which accumulate an eGFP fusion of the plasma membrane marker protein LTI6b （LTI6b-eGFP） to low level. Whereas in conventional confocal fluorescence images, the membranes of neighboring cells can hardly be optically resolved due to the strong autofluorescence of the cell wall, FIDSAM allows for imaging of single, isolated membranes at high spatial resolution. Thus, FIDSAM will enable the sub-cellular analysis of even low-expressed fluorophoretagged proteins in living plant cells. Furthermore, the combination of FIDSAM with fluorescence lifetime imaging provides the basis to study the local physico-chemical environment of fluorophore-tagged biomolecules in living plant cells.

Reservoir Volcanic Rocks: Geology and Geochemistry, the Mesozoic Non-marine Songliao Basin, NE China

The reservoir volcanic rocks in Songliao Basin include the Lower Cretaceous (k1yc Form.,114～135 Ma, acidic rocks) and the Upper Jurassic (J3hs Form., 145～158 Ma, intermediate rocks). Vesicles coupled with faults make the volcanic reservoir spaces which do not as badly getting worse with buried depth as those of sediments generally doing. The flood rhyolites of the Lower Cretaceous cover ca. 100 000 km2 with relict thickness from 100 m to more than 1 000 m. They are high-silica, rich in aluminum and potassium, high REE contents with large negative Eu anomalies, thus believed also be formed by the large-scale sialic crust partial-melting. The andesitic rocks of the Upper Jurassic are rich in Al and k, but with lower REE contents and minor negative Eu anomalies, as well as dispersal patterns of HREE. They are believed to be produced by progressively shallower partial-melting where the fractionation of garnet and/or zircon may be involved. The most probable heat sources provided for the long-lasting volcanisms in the Songliao Basin is the subduction of the Okhotsk plate.

Customer Retention: Behaviour Perspective Model of Ghanaian Telecommunication Industry Using Multinomial Regression Analysis

To stay competitive, the mobile telecommunication companies spend millions of Ghana cedi each year on building long-term relationships with their customers. Marketing managers are constantly challenged with the problem of where to channel the limited resources in order to retain existing customers. This study approaches the customer retention problem in the mobile phone sector from a behavioural perspective, applying the Behavioural Perspective Model as the main analytical framework and further exploits some other factors that influence customer retention. The model includes a set of pre-behaviour and post-behaviour factors to study consumer choice, and explains its relevant drivers in a viable and comprehensive way, grounded in radical behaviourism. Data for the analysis were collected from tertiary students from Accra and Takoradi. Data collected were analysed using the multinomial regression technique. Analysis of the data revealed that the Behaviour setting factor is the only significant element in Behaviour Perspective Model. Further exploitation of behaviour situation revealed that the number of networks a customer uses, previous experience of a customer and customer’s intention are significant factors in determining customer retention in Ghana’s mobile telecommunication industry.

为提高纳米纤维神经移植物的接触引导,设计了一种含有取向纳米纤维束的"芯鞘"型神经移植物,它利用静电纺高取向纳米纤维膜,两次卷绕形成"芯"和"鞘",最后通过静电纺丝喷覆而成。利用扫描电镜观察并表征了纤维及其移植物形态,测试了力学性能,将此移植物用于大鼠10mm坐骨神经缺损,术后两月通过体外刺激和组织学观察了修复效果。结果表明:通过调整静电纺收集转辊转速可获得高取向聚乳酸纳米纤维,纳米纤维膜工程应力和伸长率达到(49.32±14.83)MPa和17.71%±0.06%,利用该膜构建的神经移植物缝合强力达到(1.18±0.40)N/针,能支持与保护神经再生,移植两月后,大鼠能够感知热与外力刺激,组织学观察发现,有神经纤维和血旺细胞长入神经移植物,证明了该构建技术的可行性,并有可能为神经修复提供一种新的移植材料。

Emphysematous Pyelonephritis in a Renal Transplant Patient

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a necrotizing bacterial infection of the kidney that is caused by gas-forming organisms. We report a case of a 58-year-old man with a renal transplant who presented to the emergency room with nausea, vomiting and right lower quadrant abdominal pain. At the time of presentation, he was hemodynamically stable, and the abdominal examination was significant for tenderness over the allograft. Urinalysis was positive for large amounts of leukocyte esterase and white blood cells. He received empiric antibiotic coverage with piperacillin/tazobactam. Over the following 24 hours, the patient developed septic shock manifested by hemodynamic instability. A non-contrast CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis elucidated a heterogeneous gas containing collection in the allograft. Emergent transplant nephrectomy was performed. Postoperatively, the patient rapidly recovered and was subsequently discharged home to commence outpatient hemodialysis. A review of the literature suggests that early recognition of the severity of EPN as manifested by hemodynamic instability dictates emergent transplant nephrectomy as the treatment of choice.
