Sward Structural Characteristics and Performance of Beef Heifers Reared under Rotational Grazing Management on Campos Grassland

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two rest intervals on structural sward characteristics and productive performance of beef heifers reared on Campos grassland managed on rotational grazing. The treatments were two intervals between grazing of 375 and 750 DD (degree days), based on thermal cumulative sum for leaf expansion of native grasses belonging to two functional groups. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with two treatments and three replications. The tested animals were beef heifers with initial age of 12 months and average weight of 185.2 ± 17.4 kg. Measures in the pasture were: herbage mass, mass of green leaf blades, stem mass, dead material mass and green leaf allowance. The 750 DD rest interval presented higher herbage mass (24%), higher green herbage mass and 19% more leaves in the canopy. This rest interval also presents a high proportion of dead material and stems in the sward structure. In the other way, the 375 DD rest interval presents better chemical characteristics, with 20% more crude protein in the hand plucking samples. Heifers’ dry matter intake was similar between the rest intervals (2.04% of live weight) and the bite mass was also similar (0.22 g DM per bite) but the animal performance was higher in the 375 DD rest interval. The stocking density showed similarity between treatments with an average of 875 kg/LW/ha. The live weight gain per area was higher in 40 kg/LW/ha (P = 0.117) for 375 DD rest interval, reaching 251 kg/LW/ha produced over the 149 experimental days. Based on these results, we can conclude that the treatment of shortest interval between defoliation gave the highest gain individual animals in warm seasons.

Chronic liver failure-consortium acute-on-chronic liver failure and acute decompensation scores predict mortality in Brazilian cirrhotic patients

To validate prognostic scores for acute decompensation of cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure in Brazilian *** is a prospective cohort study designed to assess the prognostic performance of the chronic liver failure-consortium (CLIF-C) acute decompensation score (CLIF-C AD) and CLIF-C acute-on-chronic liver failure score (CLIF-C ACLF), regarding 28-d and 90-d mortality, as well as to compare them to other prognostic models, such as Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD), MELD Sodium (MELD-Na), Child-Pugh (CP) score, and the CLIF-C Organ Failure score (CLIF-C OF). All participants were adults with acute decompensation of cirrhosis admitted to the Emergency Department of a tertiary hospital in southern Brazil. Prognostic performances were evaluated by means of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, area under the curves (AUC) and 95%*** hundred and thirteen cirrhotic patients were included. At admission, 18 patients had acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) and 95 individuals had acute decompensation (AD) without ACLF, of which 24 eventually developed ACLF during the course of hospitalization (AD evolving to ACLF group). The AD group had significantly lower 28-d (9.0%) and 90-d (18.3%) mortality as compared to the AD evolving to ACLF group and to the ACLF group (both P < 0.001). On the other hand, 28-d and 90-d mortalities were not significantly different between AD evolving to ACLF group and ACLF group (P = 0.542 and P = 0.708, respectively). Among patients with ACLF, at 28 d from the diagnosis, CLIF-C ACLF was the only score able to predict mortality significantly better than the reference line, with an AUC (95%CI) of 0.71 (95%CI: 0.54-0.88, P = 0.021). Among patients with AD, all prognostic scores performed significantly better than the reference line regarding 28-d mortality, presenting with similar AUCs: CLIF-C AD score 0.75 (95%CI: 0.63-0.88), CP score 0.72 (95%CI: 0.59-0.85), MELD score 0.75 (95%CI: 0.61-0.90),

Role of micronutrients in staging of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease:A retrospective cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) presents high incidence throughout the world and has been progressively increasing in prevalence. This disease has a heterogeneous natural history, including simple steatosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), and cirrhosis. The factors that determine its evolution to more severe forms of the disease are still poorly understood, and micronutrients with antioxidant potential may be involved in the pathophysiology of the *** To evaluate the relationship between serum levels of micronutrients and the severity of *** A retrospective, observational and cross-sectional study was conducted. This study included all patients undergoing bariatric surgery who experienced liver biopsy during the procedure, and had serum levels of micronutrients(vitamin D,vitamin B12, zinc, iron, and magnesium), which was assessed in a preoperative evaluation conducted at a reference center in southern *** A total of 614 patients were analyzed, of which 93% had steatosis, 70.7% had NASH, and 49.3% had some degree of fibrosis. Serum levels of vitamin D were negatively correlated with the severity of steatosis and NASH, and serum levels of vitamin B12 were positively correlated with the severity of steatosis and fibrosis. The other micronutrients showed no association with NAFLD *** Serum levels of vitamin D are inversely related to the severity of steatosis and NASH, and serum levels of vitamin B12 are higher in more advanced stages of simple steatosis and liver fibrosis. Serum levels of zinc, iron, and magnesium were not associated with NAFLD severity.

Oral pharmacological treatment for patent ductus arteriosus in premature neonates with hemodynamic repercussions

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of oral indomethacin, ibuprofen, and paracetamol in oral dosage form on patent ductus arteriosus(PDA) in premature neonates with significant clinical and hemodynamic repercussions(CHRs) and to determine the effect of these respective treatments on renal ***: A retrospective study of cases of PDA in premature neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was conducted. The treatments consisted of indomethacin[0.2 mg/(kg$d), 3-day cycle], ibuprofen [10 mg/(kg$d) followed by 5 mg/(kg$d), 3-day cycle], and paracetamol(15 mg/kg every 6 h, 5-day cycle). The drugs were administered as an oral solution. The following variables were considered: gestational age,newborn weight at birth, Apgar score, diuresis, serum creatinine and urea levels, and serum electrolyte levels(sodium and potassium).Results: Treatment with indomethacin presented efficacy of 87.5% in closure of the ductus with a mean outcome period of 3.5 d. In premature neonates with CHRs and contraindications for indomethacin, the initial treatment with either ibuprofen or paracetamol failed to close the ductus. However, when this treatment was followed by indomethacin, closure occurred in 66.7% of the neonates, with an outcome period of9.66 d. The initial treatment with one cycle of ibuprofen followed by one or two cycles of paracetamol failed to close the ***: Oral indomethacin was effective for closure of the PDA in premature neonates with severe CHRs. Oral paracetamol or ibuprofen for PDA closure in premature neonates with severe CHRs and contraindications for indomethacin was ***, results in clinical improvements of neonates allowed the subsequent use of indomethacin and successful closure of the ductus. A significant reduction of diuresis occurred in neonates who were treated with indomethacin, either as a first-line treatment or after the failure of ibuprofen or paracetamol.

Evaluation of the Thermal Performance in External Vertical Enclosures Constituted of Metal Panels

Brazil has a great climatic diversity,with different demands for the adequate thermal performance of buildings,where the variables that impact it have different influences depending on the location and the type of wrapping *** a prior study of the thermal performance of a building is not done in the design phase,the unpleasant effects for the user appear after the building is ready,and bring with them problems such as internal temperatures that are too high in the summer or too low in the ***,the objective of this study is to provide recommendations for the application of ACM(aluminum composite material)composite panels and thermoacoustic(sandwich)tiles for external enclosure in the single-family residential sector.A high standard two-story residence with approximately 162 m^(2)per floor is used as a model and through computer simulations,utilizing the Energyplus program and observing the requirements of the NBR 15.575 performance standard,the thermal performance is *** factorial experiment was applied encompassing thermal performance variables such as absorptance,natural ventilation and thermophysical properties of the wrapping for three different climatic conditions:extreme winter climate,average climate and extreme summer *** results obtained show that the thermoacoustic roof tile keeps the internal temperature more stable independent of external oscillations,while the ACM panels follow the external oscillations,not meeting the expectations of thermal performance and needing passive treatments.

A single administration of fish oil inhibits the acute inflammatory response in rats

Objective: To investigate the antiinflammatory effects of a single administration of fish oil(FO) on the acute inflammatory response. Methods: The paw edema and pleurisy models were used to evaluate the effects of FO dissolved in olive oil(FOP) orally administered in a single dose in rats. Nitric oxide(NO) concentrations in the pleural exudate were performed according to the Griess method and the cytokine concentrations were determined by Luminex bead-based multiplex assay. Results: FOP treatment(30 and 300 mg/kg) significantly reduced paw edema. FOP treatment at 18.75, 37.5, 75.0, 150.0, and 300 mg/kg decreased both the volume of pleural exudate and cellular migration into the pleural cavity and each of these doses presented the same effectiveness. Treatment with FOP(300 mg/kg) reduced NO, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 concentrations in the pleural exudate. Conclusions: The present data provide evidence that FO has inhibitory effects on the acute inflammatory response when administered in a single dose in rats. This effect might be attributable to a direct inhibitory effect of FO on the production or release of inflammatory mediators that are involved in the pathological processes evaluated herein.

Objective:To identify whether Canova medication changes TNF-α and IL-10 serum levels in mice infected with Trypanosoma cruzi Y ***:Animals were divided into five groups:non-treated infected animals(I); benznidazole-treated infected animals(Bz; 100 mg/kg body weight,single daily dose by gavage); Canova medication(CM) treated infected animals(CM;0.2 mL/animal,single daily dose by gavage); benznidazole- and Canova medication–treated infected animals with the above-mentioned dose(Bz+CM);and non-infected animals(C).TNF-α and IL-10 levels were determined in serum aliquots after 4,7,10,13,and 29 days of *** ELISA technique was employed with R&D System *** ***:A high increase in TNF-α and IL-10 levels occurred in the infected and CM-treated groups within the treatment employed on the 10 th day after infection,coupled with a IL-10 decrease on the 13 th day after infection when compared with the other experimental ***:CM may change the balance between plasma cytokine levels(TNF-α and IL-10) in mice infected with Y strain ***,with important consequences leading towards a more severe infection.
