The COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity to explore the impact of government mandates on movement restrictions and non-pharmaceutical interventions on a novel infection,and we investigate these strategies in early-stage outbreak *** rate of disease spread in South Africa varied over time as individuals changed behavior in response to the ongoing pandemic and to changing government *** a system of ordinary differential equations,we model the outbreak in the province of Gauteng,assuming that several parameters vary over *** data from the time period before vaccination gives the approximate dates of parameter changes,and those dates are linked to government *** parameters are then estimated from available case data and used to assess the impact of each *** forward in time,possible scenarios give projections involving the implementation of two different vaccines at varying *** results quantify the impact of different government policies and demonstrate how vaccinations can alter infection spread.

Mathematical assessment of the role of vector insecticide resistance and feeding/resting behavior on malaria transmission dynamics:Optimal control analysis

The large-scale use of insecticide-treated bednets(ITNs)and indoor residual spraying(IRS),over the last two decades,has resulted in a dramatic reduction of malaria incidence ***,the effectiveness of these interventions is now being threatened by numerous factors,such as resistance to insecticide in the mosquito vector and their preference to feed and rest outdoors or early in the evening(when humans are not protected by the bednets).This study presents a new deterministic model for assessing the population-level impact of mosquito insecticide resistance on malaria transmission dynamics.A notable feature of the model is that it stratifies the mosquito population in terms of type(wild or resistant to insecticides)and feeding preference(indoor or outdoor).The model is rigorously analysed to gain insight into the existence and asymptotic stability properties of the various disease-free equilibria of the model namely the trivial diseasefree equilibrium,the non-trivial resistant-only boundary disease-free equilibrium and a non-trivial disease-free equlibrium where both the wild and resistant mosquito geneotypes co-exist).Simulations of the model,using data relevant to malaria transmission dynamics in Ethiopia(a malaria-endemic nation),show that the use of optimal ITNs alone,or in combination with optimal IRS,is more effective than the singular implementation of an optimal IRS-only ***,when the effect of the fitness cost of insecticide resistance with respect to fecundity(i.e.,assuming a decrease in the baseline birth rate of new resistant-type adult female mosquitoes)is accounted for,numerical simulations of the model show that the combined optimal ITNs-IRS strategy could lead to the effective control of the disease,and insecticide resistance effectively managed during the first 8 years of the 15-year implementation period of the insecticides-based anti-malaria control measures in the community.

Substituent effect on spectral and antimicrobial activity of Schiff bases derived from aminobenzoic acids

The dependence of electronic absorption spectra antimicrobial property on the substituent position was investigated using three Schiff bases derived from salicylaldehyde and isomeric aminobenzoic acids in three solvents of different polarities. The absorption maxima in all three solvents exhibited dependence on the position of substituent with the absorption maxima undergoing a red shift as solvent polarity increased. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the compounds against some clinically important bacteria namely Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Enterococcus feacalis (ATCC 29212) was determined in N,N”-dimethylformamide and 1,4-dioxane using the agar dilution method. The results revealed that the ortho and meta substituted Schiff bases exhibited better antimicrobial activity in the non-polar solvent.

Terminal fertility control: Clients’ own reason for the choice of the contraceptive method

background: The prevalence of contraceptive use has increased worldwide due to the development and introduction of modern contraceptives and the establishment of organized family planning programs. In Nigeria, there is a very slow rise in contraceptive use prevalence, resulting in high fertility rate. Generally contraceptive is either used for birth spacing, or for the purpose of terminal fertility control to limit the number of children, and the choice of method for this purpose varies. Aims and Objectives: To determine the contraceptive methods of choice among clients seeking terminal fertility control, and their reasons for the choice of such methods. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of clients attending the family planning clinic of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching hospital over a period of twenty-four months, between July, 2009 and June, 2011. All clients who had completed their family, and wanted a contraceptive method to limit their family size filled the semi-structured questionnaire after giving their informed consent. Clients’ own reasons for the choice of the particular contraceptive method were grouped, entered into SPSS work sheet, and analyzed using SPSS version 17. Result: There were five hundred and ninety-two new contraceptive method acceptors during the study period, of which 264 (44.6%) were for terminal fertility control. Progestogen-only injectable contraceptive was the method of choice for terminal fertility control by 145 (54.9%) of the clients, while 85 (32.2%) made intrauterine contraceptive device (copper-T) their method of choice, and the least chosen method was female surgical sterilization (2, 0.8%). Ease of administration, satisfaction with previous use, long duration of action, and husband’s preference were the reasons for the choice of the methods. Conclusion: There is awareness of terminal fertility control in Nigeria, especially in the southwestern region of the country, and this may be responsible for

Assessment of nurses’knowledge of the prevention of hospital-associated venous thromboembolism in a tertiary health institution in Nigeria

Objective:This study assessed the level of nurses’knowledge of the prevention of venous thromboembolism(VTE)in a tertiary health *** and Methods:This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 328 eligible respondents,selected using a random sampling method in a teaching hospital in Nigeria.A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data on the basic knowledge,risk factors,and preventive measures of ***:Findings from the study revealed that 51.2%scored above the mean score of 28.6±*** educational status of the respondents had a significant influence on their knowledge of risk factors of VTE(F=4.696,P=0.031).Conclusion:The overall knowledge of nurses is satisfactory,although the majority could not answer correctly questions on the administration of prefilled anticoagulants and identification of some key risk factors of VTE.

Objective:To assess acute toxicity,the in vitro and in vivo effects of methanol and ethyl acetate extracts(JME and JEE)of Jatonik polyherbal mixture on some mitochondria-related parameters and their effect on the activity of some liver ***:Acute toxicity of JME and JEE was determined using Lorke’s *** vitro and in vivo opening of the mitochondrial membrane permeability transition pore(MMPT pore)was spectrophotometrically *** of malondialdehyde(MDA)as an index of lipid peroxidation and the activity of mitochondrial ATPase was evaluated in vitro and in vivo and the effect of JME and JEE on the activity of liver enzymes such as alkaline phosphatase(ALP),aspartate and alanine aminotransferase(AST and ALT)and gamma-glutamyl transferase(GGT)was also ***:JME had an LD_(50) of 3808 mg/kg b.w whereas JEE had an LD_(50) greater than 5000 mg/kg *** *** the rats have been fed with both extracts,a photomicrograph of a piece of liver tissue showed no apparent symptoms of *** the in vitro and in vivo studies,both extracts prompted intact mitochondria to open their MMPT *** compared to the control,lipid peroxide product release and ATPase activity were significantly increased(Pbut the activity of AST was considerably enhanced when treated with JEE(Pboth JME and JEE of the Jatonik polyherbal mixture had low toxicity,profound MMPTpore induction,and enhanced ATPase activity,but an increased MDA ***:Jatonik extracts may be a promising target for drug development in diseases where there is dysregulation of apoptosis,however,further studies are needed to better clarify the molecular mechanism involved in these phenomena.

background: Herbal dentifrices appear to have become an attractive alternative for some consumers and its use has gained appreciable acceptance in Nigeria. This could be partly due to the perception that herbal toothpastes like other herbal products are “natural”, devoid of chemicals and therefore superior to regular toothpastes. Aggressive advertisement of the products may also contribute to this new trend. Mucosal symptoms such as glossitis and intolerance to spicy foods seen in patients attending the oral diagnosis clinic are usually associated with anaemia and nutritional deficiency states. The disturbing trend of an increasing number of patients presenting with such oral mucosal symptoms associated with the use of herbal dentifrices prompted this study. This trend was observed in two isolated oral medicine clinics. Objective: To sensitize oral health, allied professionals and consumers on the possible adverse effects of regular use of some herbal dentifrices sold in Nigeria. Materials and Methods: Routine patients of two oral medicine clinics in Lagos, namely the Randle General Hospital and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital who complained of some adverse mucosal signs and symptoms following the regular use of two identified herbal toothpastes made up the study population. The study was conducted between April 2010-April 2011. A detailed history and examination was carried out on these patients and clinical photographs of oral signs observed was taken in consenting patients. Data analysis was done using the Epi-info 6 software. P values ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant and data was presented in table format. Results: A total of 45 patients, 9 (20%) males and 36 (80%) fe-males were seen. The age range of patients was 14 - 78 years;mean age 45.5 ± 14.9 years. Impact of Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy on the Salivary Levels of Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinse-1 (TIMP-1) in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis: A Third World Experience

Chronic periodontitis is a disease of public health concern due to its high prevalence globally, especially in the elderly. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of non-surgical periodontal therapy on salivary levels of TIMP-1 among patients with chronic periodontitis in Nigeria. In this experimental study, unstimulated whole saliva (2 mL) was collected from participants in the experimental and control groups, coded (SP1-40 and SH1-40) respectively and assays for salivary TIMP-1as well as clinical measurements such as plaque (PI), probing depths (PD), and CAL were recorded before and 4 weeks after periodontal treatment. Assay was done using Quantikine human TIMP-1 ELISA kit. Data were presented using frequency tables, means and standard deviation. Paired-T Test assessed association between salivary TIMP-1 before and after treatment. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to correlate salivary TIMP-1 levels with clinical parameters of periodontal disease and levels of statistical significance were set at p baseline but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.13). There was a statistically significant increase in the salivary levels of TIMP-1 in the case group after phase-one periodontal therapy from 13.58 ± 6.53 ng/mL to 17.24 ± 8.44 ng/mL (p = 0.001). Negative correlations were observed between TIMP-1 and clinical parameters of periodontitis. This was not statistically significant. Therefore, TIMP-1 may not be an ideal biomarker for periodontal diagnosis but may be useful in treatment monitoring of the disease.

Amino acid quality indices of the leaves of Clerodendrum volubile

Objective:To evaluate the amino acid profile and quality indices of Clerodendrum volubile(***)***:Dried leaves of *** were blended,defatted and subjected to amino acid analysis using the technicon sequential multi-sample amino acid *** amino acid quality indices which covers for chemical score,essential amino acid index,nutritional index,true digestibility,protein digestibility corrected amino acid score,and digestible indispensable amino acid score were evaluated using standard ***:Amino acid analysis revealed glutamic acid to have the highest concentration,with cysteine having the *** acid had the highest chemical score,this was followed by glycine,histidine and arginine,*** least scores were observed in serine and *** acid had the highest value for true digestibility and protein digestibility corrected amino acid score,with the least observed in *** indispensable amino acid score evaluation showed histidine to have the highest value for infants(birth to 6 months),threonine for children(6 months to 3 years),while isoleucine was observed to have the highest value for older children,adolescents and *** essential amino acid index value was less than 4,while nutritional index value was less than ***:These results indicated the leaves of *** as a potential source of amino acids in the human diet as portrayed by its amino acids profile and qualities.
