Magnesium as biodegradable biomaterial could serve as bone augmentation material in implant *** knowledge about the predictability of the biodegradation process is essential as this process needs to go hand in hand with the formation of new bone to gradually replace the augmentation ***,this work aimed to assess if the electrochemistry(EC)measurements of the corrosion process correlate with the surface features at various time points during the surface degradation,in order to describe the degradation process of Mg and Mg alloys more reliably,under the assumption that differences in EC behavior can be detected and related to specific patterns on the *** this test setup,a special optical chamber was used for electrochemical measurements on Mg and Mg-alloys(Mg2Ag,Mg4Ag,and Mg6Ag).Specimens were investigated using different circulating cell culture solutions as electrolytes,these were minimum essential medium(MEM),Hank’s balanced Salt Solution(HbSS),and MEM+(MEM with added sodium hydrogen carbonate)at 37℃.Open circuit potential measurements(OCP)over 30 min followed by cyclic polarization were *** electrochemistry data,including OCP,exchange current density and corrosion potential,were compared with visible changes at the surface during these treatments over *** results show that the addition of silver(Ag)leads to a“standardization”of the degradation regardless of the selected test *** is currently difficult to correlate the visible microscopic changes with the data taken from the ***,further investigations are necessary.

Incidence and analysis of radial head and neck fractures

AIM: To investigate several complications like persistent radial head dislocation, forearm deformity, elbow stiffness and nerve palsies, associated with radial head fractures. METHODS: This study reviewed the clinical records and trauma database of this level Ⅰ Trauma Center and identified all patients with fractures of the radial head and neck who where admitted between 2000 and 2010. An analysis of clinical records revealed 1047 patients suffering from fractures of the radial head or neck classified according to Mason. For clinical examination, range of motion, local pain and overall outcome were assessed. RESULTS: The incidence of one-sided fractures was 99.2% and for simultaneous bilateral fractures 0.8%. Non-operative treatment was performed in 90.4%(n = 947) of the cases, surgery in 9.6%(n = 100). bony union was achieved in 99.8%(n = 1045) patients. Full satisfaction was achieved in 59%(n = 615) of the patients. A gender related significant difference(P = 0.035) in Mason type distribution-type Ⅲ fractures were more prominent in male patients vs type Ⅳ fractures in female patients-was observed in our study population. CONCLUSION: Mason typeⅠfractures can be treated safe conservatively with good results. In type Ⅱ to Ⅳ surgical intervention is usually considered to be indicated.

Room temperature positive magnetoresistance(PMR)in graphene is a conventional phenomenon but we observed large negative magnetoresistance(NMR)in graphene foam(GF)/polydimethylsiloxane(GF/PDMS)at room-mperature for the first *** largest NMR^35%was detected at 250 K,while PMR is observed below 200 ***,PMR at all temperatures is observed in regular GF specimens,hence,NMR is the result of the infiltration with the electrically insulating *** interference and wavefunction shrinkage model has been employed to understand the transport mechanism in GF/PDMS.A critical temperature^224 Kfor switching between NMR and PMR is observed at the crystallization-mperature of PDMS,suggesti ng a cha nge in polymer chai n con formation may be a major reason leading to NMR in GF/PDMS specimens thus role of mechanical properties of PDMS in NMR cannot be ignored and observed locally via specially;resolved atomic force *** addition,storage modulus and heat flow study shows similar transition temperature(~200 K)of NMR to PMR and provide an evidence of mechanical stable *** is known,large,tunable,and unsaturated NMR at room temperature is very useful for future facile practical shapeable magnetoelectronic devices.

Surgical Treatment of Craniopharyngiomas in Adults:Comparison between Primary Surgery and Surgery for Recurrence

Objective Few studies have investigated the differences in outcomes between primary and repeat surgery for a craniopharyngioma in *** a result,a treatment concept for adult patients with a craniopharyngioma has not yet been *** present study aimed to retrospectively analyze adult patients with craniopharyngioma to compare surgical outcomes between primary surgery and surgery for *** The demographic and clinical data of 68 adult patients with craniopharyngioma who had primary surgery(n=50)or surgery for recurrence(n=18)were retrospectively *** addition,the patients were followed up for an average of 38.6 months(range:1–133 months).Results The cohorts of patients undergoing primary surgery or repeat surgery did not differ preoperatively in terms of demographic data,or radiological tumor ***,patients with recurrent craniopharyngioma had significantly more pituitary hormone deficits and hypothalamo-pituitary disorders before surgery compared with patients with newly diagnosed *** success rate of complete resection in primary surgery was 53.2%.Even after repeat surgery,a satisfactory rate of complete resection of 35.7%was *** morbidity was increased neither in patients with repeat surgery compared with those with primary surgery(postoperative bleeding P=0.560;meningitis P=1.000;CSF leak P=0.666;visual disturbance P=0.717)nor in patients with complete resection compared with those with partial *** found no difference in recurrence-free survival between initial surgery and repeat surgery(P=0.733).The recurrence rate was significantly lower after complete resection(6.9%)than after partial resection(47.8%;Pbut also for those with recurrent ***,the surgeon must settle for less than total resection if postoperative morbidity is anticipated.

Medicago truncatula is a model legume species that has been studied for decades to understand the symbiotic relationship between legumes and soil bacteria collectively named *** symbiosis called nodulation is initiated in roots with the infection of root hair cells by the bacteria,as well as the initiation of nodule primordia from root cortical,endodermal,and pericycle cells,leading to the development of a new root organ,the nodule,where bacteria fix and assimilate the atmospheric dinitrogen for the benefit of the ***,we report the isolation and use of the nuclei from mock and rhizobia-inoculated roots for the single nuclei RNA-seq(sNucRNA-seq)profiling to gain a deeper understanding of early responses to rhizobial infection in Medicago roots.A gene expression map of the Medicago root was generated,comprising 25 clusters,which were annotated as specific cell types using 119 Medicago marker genes and orthologs to Arabidopsis cell-type marker genes.A focus on root hair,cortex,endodermis,and pericycle cell types,showing the strongest differential regulation in response to a short-term(48 h)rhizobium inoculation,revealed not only known genes and functional pathways,validating the sNucRNA-seq approach,but also numerous novel genes and pathways,allowing a comprehensive analysis of early root symbiotic responses at a cell type-specific level.

Yb-and Er concentration dependence of the upconversion luminescence of highly doped NaYF_(4):Yb,Er/NaYF_(4):Lu core/shell nanocrystals prepared by a water-free synthesis

High sensitizer and activator concentrations have been increasingly examined to improve the performance of multi-color emissive upconversion(UC)nanocrystals(UCNC)like NaYF_(4):Yb,Er and first strategies were reported to reduce concentration quenching in highly doped *** luminescence(UCL)is,however,controlled not only by dopant concentration,yet by an interplay of different parameters including size,crystal and shell quality,and excitation power density(P).Thus,identifying optimum dopant concentrations requires systematic studies of UCNC designed to minimize additional quenching pathways and quantitative ***,we quantify the dopant concentration dependence of the UCL quantum yield(ΦUC)of solid NaYF_(4):Yb,Er/NaYF_(4):Lu upconversion core/shell nanocrystals of varying Yb3+and Er3+concentrations(Yb3+series:20%‒98%Yb3+;2%Er3+;Er3+series:60%Yb3+;2%‒40%Er3+).To circumvent other luminescence quenching processes,an elaborate synthesis yielding OH-free UCNC with recordΦUC of~9%and~25 nm core particles with a thick surface shell were *** Yb3+concentrations barely reduceΦUC from~9%(20%Yb3+)to~7%(98%Yb3+)for an Er3+concentration of 2%,thereby allowing to strongly increase the particle absorption cross section and UCNC *** an increased Er3+concentration reducesΦUC from~7%(2%Er3+)to 1%(40%)for 60%Yb3+.Nevertheless,at very high P(>1 MW/cm^(2))used for microscopic studies,highly Er3+-doped UCNC display a high brightness because of reduced *** findings underline the importance of synthesis control and will pave the road to many fundamental studies of UC materials.

Objective The present study aimed to test whether exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields （RF-EMF） emitted by mobile phone base stations may have effects on salivary alpha-amylase, immunoglobulin A （IgA）, and cortisol levels. Methods Fifty seven participants were randomly allocated to one of three different experimental scenarios （22 participants to scenario 1, 26 to scenario 2, and 9 to scenario 3）. Each participant went through five 50-minute exposure sessions. The main RF-EMF source was a GSM-900-MHz antenna located at the outer wall of the building. In scenarios 1 and 2, the first, third, and fifth sessions were ＂low＂（median power flux density 5.2 μW/m^2） exposure. The second session was ＂high＂（2126.8 μW/m^2）, and the fourth session was ＂medium＂（153.6 μW/m^2） in scenario 1, and vice versa in scenario 2. Scenario 3 had four ＂low＂ exposure conditions, followed by a ＂high＂ exposure condition. biomedical parameters were collected by saliva samples three times a session. Exposure levels were created by shielding curtains. Results In scenario 3 from session 4 to session 5 （from ＂low＂ to ＂high＂ exposure）, an increase of cortisol was detected, while in scenarios 1 and 2, a higher concentration of alpha-amylase related to the baseline was identified as compared to that in scenario 3. IgA concentration was not significantly related to the exposure. Conclusions RF-EMF in considerably lower field densities than ICNIRP-gnidelines may influence certain psychobiological stress markers.

Ignition within gas burner ejectors can lead to off design conditions and has significant influence on the burner *** ignition in the ejector should be *** the present study the influence of combustion reactions on the performance of gas burner injectors is *** investigate if ignition is possible,simulated ignition delay times,using a detailed reaction mechanism,are compared to predicted mean residence times of the gas in the *** burner ejectors are designed using one dimensional analytic equations,based on energy and momentum conservation equations and conventional isentropic equations.1D results are compared to 2D computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations,to take into account non-ideal mixing effects along the *** are validated with experiments with air at room temperature.1D results show very good agreement not only with CFD simulations for the case of non-reactive flows,but also with performed *** is shown that the assumption of ideal mixing along the ejector and thus the comparison of the ignition delay time to the gas mean residence time,to predict ignition in the ejector,is not *** in the ejector is possible,even if the ignition delay time is more than thirty times higher than the mean residence *** addition to that,it is shown,that ignition and the choice of reaction mechanism have significant influence on the predicted gas burner ejector ***,the accurate prediction of ignition delay time and the use of a detailed reaction kinetic are mandatory to correctly predict the burner ejector behavior.
