Height limitations are not uncommon in multi-storey buildings due to economic requirements and esthetical considerations. Substantial spaces are normally required to enable the passage of large pipes and ducts beneath steel beams leading to uneconomic floor heights. The most adopted solution for this issue is the use of steel beam web openings to provide the required space for services. These openings could lead to a significant decrease of the beam load carrying capacity depending on the adopted openings shape, size and location. These aspects motivated the present study based on FE simulations calibrated against numerical and test results. The results accuracy enabled a comprehensive parametric analysis of beams with web openings to be made focused on the profile size, web opening location, among others. The study also investigated the efficiency of longitudinal stiffeners welded at the opening region and benefits of using an adequate edge concordance radius in beams with rectangular and square openings. The obtained results showed the need of using welded longitudinal stiffeners in order to increase the beams ultimate load carrying capacity. This adoption can double or even triple the ultimate load of beams with rectangular and square opening heights equal to 0.75 H, respectively.

Objective:To evaluate the antioxidant,antibacterial and bacterial cell agglutination activities of the hexane(Hex) and 70%ethanol(70%EtOH) extracts of two species of red seaweeds Pterocladiella capillacea(***) and Osmundaria ***:In vitro antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH radical scavenging assay,ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay,ferrous ion chelating assay,β-carotene bleaching assay and total phenolic content *** activity was tested using the method of disc diffusion on Mueller-Hinton *** ability of algal extracts to agglutinate bacterial cells was also ***:The 70%EtOH extract of the two algae showed the highest values of total phenolic content compared to the Hex *** results of DPPH for both extracts(Hex,70%EtOH) of Osmundaria obtusiloba(43.46%and 99.47%) were higher than those of ***(33.04%and 40.81%) at a concentration of 1 000 μg/*** for the ferrous ion chelating,there was an opposite behavior,extracts of *** had a higher *** extracts showed a low ferric-reducing antioxidant power,with optical density ranging from0.054 to *** activities of all extracts evaluated for β-carotene bleaching were above 40%.There was no antibacterial activity against bacterial strains ***,the extracts of both species were able to agglutinate bacterial Gram positive cells of Staphylococcus aureus and Gram negative cells of Escherichia coli,multidrug-resistant Salmonella and Vibrio *** This is the first report of the interaction between these algal extracts,rich in natural compounds with antioxidant potential,and Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial cells.

The applicatio n of nano particles as selective drug delivery platforms arises as one the most promising therapeutic strategies in the biomedical field. Such systems can encapsulate drugs, prevent its premature degradation, transport and promote the drugs specific delivery to the target site. Among the different nanostructures, gold-core mesoporous silica shell (AuMSS) nanorods have been one of the most explored due to their unique physical and chemical properties. The mesoporous silica biocompatibility, high surface area that can be easily functionalized, tubular pores that can store the drugs, conjugated with the intrinsic capacity of gold nanorod to absorb near-infrared radiation, allows the combination of hyperthermia (i.e., photothermal effect) with drug delivery, making them a nanoplatforms with a huge potential for cancer therapy. Nevertheless, the successful applicati on of AuMSS nanoparticles as an effective can cer nano medicine is hindered by the uncon trolled release of the therapeutic payloads, limited blood circulation time and unfavorable pharmacokinetics. In this review, an overview of the modificati ons performed to improve the AuMSS nano rods applicati on in nanom edicine is provided, highlighting the practical approaches that enhaneed the AuMSS nanorods targeting, responsiveness to different stimuli, and blood circulation time. Further, the basics of AuMSS nano rods syn thesis procedures, gen eral properties, and its applicati on in can cer therapy are also described.

Genetic Variability among Genotypes of Physic Nut Regarding Seed Biometry

With probable center of origin in Brazil, the species Jatropha curcas L., known as physic nut, is a tropical oilseed with potential for cultivation aiming at the production of biodiesel. This study was conducted with the objective of investigating the genetic variability regarding the morphology of seeds of physic nut, using biometric analyses to identify variables that have potential for the study of the diversity of the species and the classification of genotypes. Seeds of 22 genotypes of physic nut, from the germplasm bank of Embrapa Agroenergia (Brazil) were evaluated regarding characteristics of size and mass. The genotypes of Jatropha curcas L. selected by the Brazilian breeding program presented high diversity for characteristics of the seeds, allowing the exploration of this genetic variability to classify genotypes in different groups. In addition, variables related to the biomass of the seeds present high relative contributions to the diversity observed in the genotypes.

This study investigated the use of a product based on yacon (PBY) in microbiological, physical-chemical and intestinal characteristics of Wistar rats artificially constipated with Loperamide®. Thirty-two rats were divided into four groups: Control (C), Constipated Control (CC), PBY (not constipated) and Constipated PBY (PBYC). The dosage of 0.14 g of FOS+ inulin/kg was tested. Microbiota, pH and faeces characteristics of faeces and caecal contents were evaluated. Caecal weight, morphometry of caecal villi and the concentration of short-chain fatty acids were determined. Higher caecal weight was identified in the PBYC animals as well as higher width, height and depth of cripts. The PBY group showed the highest (p < 0.05) concentration of butyrate (93.2 ± 65.5 mmol/L). The supplementation with PBY positively altered the intestine epithelial tissue in constipated animals, keeping the integrity of the caecum crypts.

This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters of Turiaçu pineapple clones using mixed models;and estimate genetic correlation coefficient between traits, to provide important information to breeding programs. For this, 19 pineapple plants were visually selected and its slips were collected and planted in a single environment and nine traits were evaluated. The genetic parameters of most evaluated traits presented significant differences between the 19 clones. Some traits, such as Fusarium wilt resistance, showed high magnitudes of heritability. Clones did not differ in relation to total titratable acidity (TTA) and total soluble solids (TSS). However, these traits, which have implications to fruit quality, showed to be negatively correlated to fruit mass (-0.46 and -0.67). The results indicate that the population of Turiaçu pineapple is suitable for selection, especially for Fusarium wilt resistance. Also, Turiaçu clones can be used in breeding programs of pineapple.

In order to assess the prevalence of physical activity (PA) and its relationship with lipid profile among adolescents, a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted with 102 adolescents aged 15 to 19 years from public schools of Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brazil. The following variables were analyzed: age, gender, ethnicity, maternal education, socioeconomic status, nutritional status, the practice of PA and lipid profile. The variables were obtained through validated form, anthropometry (weight and height) and blood collection by contract laboratory. Double entry and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 22.0 were performed. First, a descriptive analysis of all variables was conducted, as well as measures of central tendency and dispersion for continuous variables. Accordingly, distribution was tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. According to results, correlation was evaluated by Pearson/Spearman tests. Significance level of 5% was adopted for all analyses. The study was approved by the Ethics Approach Committee (EAC) of the State University of Paraíba. The most prevalent sex in the sample was female and regarding maternal education, 35.4% had complete high school. Regarding serum lipoproteins, 16% showed elevated total cholesterol and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) 66% below the desired value. With regard to physical activity, 60.8% had insufficient PA levels. The sample showed changes in lipid profile and insufficiently active life style, besides having overpowered the eutrophic nutritional status. No statistically significant correlations between variables of the lipid profile and the time of PA were observed. These findings highlight the importance of physical exercise for maintaining health and suggest studies with larger populations in order to check the scientific literature regarding this topic.

Background: Most anxiety complaints are treated with pharmacological measures involving barbiturates and benzodiazepines, in which they may end up causing tolerance and pharmacological dependence. Integrative approaches such as aromatherapy are used in addition to medications to improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety. Thus, PinetoninTM, a phytocomplex obtained from a blend of essential oils aims to aid in the symptoms of stress and anxiety. Methods: The cytotoxicity of PinetoninTM was evaluated MTT assay using fibroblasts and astrocytes showed reduction in the cell viability only at high concentrations. Evaluation of intracellular calcium and determination of residual glutamate in the supernatant of astrocyte cultures showed agonist action of dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG) increasing linearly the concentration of intracellular calcium and the glutamate levels in the supernatants of the cultures. On the other hand, cultures of astrocytes treated with PinetoninTM showed residual glutamate levels in the supernatants reducing proportionally, as well as, intracellular calcium reduction. The determination of salivary cortisol showed a significant reduction in salivary cortisol levels in the group that received PinetoninTM. The evaluation of the electroencephalogram in patients treated with PinetoninTM had a significant increase (P Results: A reduction in dose-dependent cell viability was observed when compared to cultures of PinetoninTM treated fibroblasts with control culture. When PinetoninTM and linole are administered in astrocytic cells, there was a reduction of the intracellular concentration of Ca2+ against a control group treated with DHPG agonist. The evaluation of salivary cortisol demonstrated a reduction when the patient group was treated with PinetoninTM by purchasing the results against the group of patients treated with saline. Reinforcing the relaxed state of that group, alpha waves have been increased and reductions in beta waves. Conclusion: The results

In view of the growth of retail, as well as the performance of large multinational supermarket branch in the Brazilian market, the purpose of this article is an analysis of the strategies of Casino, Carrefour, Walmart and open in the country capital, analyzing their operational, financial indicators socio-environmental initiatives. In order to achieve the main objective of this work, the construction of a method that validates this search was necessary. The main strategies and indicators of the three groups in four areas： corporate strategy, operational areo, financial areo, social and environmental issue, were analyzed. Study of qualitative, descriptive and exploratory character is realised through the importance of these three companies worldwide. As conclusions, it has been the expansion strategies that geared toward developing countries, adherence to new store formats, specializing in electronic commerce, as well as the superiority of Walmart （net sales） and Casino （Profitability）.
