Assessing the factors impacting the bioaccessibility of mercury(Hg) in rice consumption by an in-vitro method

Mercury(Hg) in rice is drawing mounting concern since methylmercury(MeHg) was found capable of accumulating in rice. In-vitro bioaccessibility is a feasible and reliable method to assess the health effects of Hg in rice and has been utilized in a number of studies. This study was done to investigate the impact of cultivar, planting location, and cooking on the total mercury(THg) and MeHg bioaccessibility of rice, for which multiple statistical analysis methods were used to analyze the significance of their effects. The THg concentrations of rice samples taken from non-Hg contaminated areas of China were all below 15 ng/g and their MeHg concentrations were below 2 ng/g. Cooking could significantly reduce the MeHg bioaccessibility of rice because the MeHg was mainly combined with protein and the protein will be denatured during the cooking process, and then the denatured MeHg is difficult to be dissolved into the liquid phase. Indica-and japonica-type rice cultivars did not show significant differentiation in either the concentration of Hg or its bioaccessibility. However, the glutinous rice type differed significantly from the above rice types, and it showed greater bioaccessibility of THg and MeHg due to its distinct protein contents and starch properties. Planting location can affect the Hg concentration in rice and THg bioaccessibility but has a limited impact on MeHg bioaccessibility. Based on these results, two macro factors(rice cultivar, planting location) are presumed to impact Hg bioaccessibility by how they affect micro factors(i.e., Hg forms).

Annual Time-series Analyses of Total Gaseous Mercury Measurement and its Impact Factors on the Gongga Mountains in the Southeastern Fringe of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Long-term monitoring programs for measurement of atmospheric mercury concentrations are presently recognized as powerful tools for local,regional and global studies of atmospheric long-range transport processes,and they could also provide valuable information about the impact of emission controls on the global budget of atmospheric mercury,their observance and an insight into the global mercury cycle. China is believed to be an increasing atmospheric mercury emission source. However,only a few measurements of mercury,to our knowledge,have been done in ambient air over China. The highly-time resolved atmospheric mercury concen-trations have been measured at Moxi Base Station (102°72′E 29°92′N,1640 m asl) of the Gongga Alpine Ecosystem Observation and Experiment Station of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) from May 2005 to June 2006 by using a set of Automatic Atmospheric Mercury Speciation Analyzers (Tekran 2537A). Measurements were carried out with a time resolution of every 15 minutes. The overall average total gaseous mercury (TGM) covering the measurement periods was 4±1.38 ng·m-3 (N=57310),which is higher than the global background level of approximately 1.5～2.0 ng·m-3. The measurements in all seasons showed a similar diurnal change pattern with a high concentration during daytime relative to nighttime and maximum concentration near solar noon and minimum concentration immediately before sunrise. The presence of diurnal TGM peaks during spring and summer was found earlier than that during autumn and winter. When divided seasonally,it was found that the concentrations of TGM were highest in winter with 6.13 ± 1.78 ng·m-3 and lowest in summer with 3.17 ± 0.67 ng·m-3. There were no significant differences in TGM among wind sectors during each season. Whereas Hg generally exhibited significant correlations with the parameters,such as temperature,saturated vapor pressure,precipitation,ultraviolet radiation (UV) and atmospheric pressure at the whole measurement stage,

Transport and fate of mercury under different hydrologic regimes in polluted stream in mining area

Seepage from Hg mine wastes and calcines contains high concentrations of mercury （Hg）. Hg pollution is a major environmental problem in areas with abandoned mercury mines and retorting units. This study evaluates factors, especially the hydrological and sedimentary variables, governing temporal and spatial variation in levels and state of mercury in streams impacted by Hg contaminated runoff. Samples were taken during different flow regimes in the Wanshan Hg mining area in Guizhou Province, China. In its headwaters the sampled streams/rivers pass by several mine wastes and calcines with high concentration of Hg. Seepage causes serious Hg contamination to the downstream area. Concentrations of Hg in water samples showed significant seasonal variations. Periods of higher flow showed high concentrations of total Hg （THg） in water due to more particles being re-suspended and transported. The concentrations of major anions （e.g., Cl-, F-, NO3- and SO4^2-） were lower during higher flow due to dilution. Due to both sedimentation of particles and dilution from tributaries the concentration of THg decreased from 2100 ng/L to background levels （〈 50 ng/L） within 10 km distance downstream. Sedimentation is the main reason for the fast decrease of the concentration, it accounts for 69% and 60% for higher flow and lower flow regimes respectively in the upper part of the stream. Speciation calculation of the dissolved Hg fraction （DHg）（using Visual MINTEQ） showed that Hg（OH）2 associated with dissolved organic matter is the main form of Hg in dissolved phase in surface waters in Wanshan （over 95%）.

Effects of typical algae species（Aphanizomenon flosaquae and Microcystis aeruginosa） on photoreduction of Hg2+ in water body

Photoreduction characteristics of divalent inorganic mercury (Hg2+) in the presence of specific algae species are still not well *** experiments were conducted in the present study to identify the effects of different concentrations of living/dead algae species,including Aphanizomenon flosaquae (AF) and Microcystis aeruginosa (MA),on the photoreduction rate of Hg2+ under various light *** experimental results showed that percentage reduction of Hg2+ was significantly influenced by radiation wavelengths,and dramatically decreased with the presence of *** highest percentage reduction of Hg2+ was induced by UV-A,followed by UV-B,visible light and dark for both living and dead AF,and the order was dark > UV-A > UV-B > visible light for both living and dead *** were two aspects,i.e.,energy and attenuation rate of light radiation and excrementitious generated from algae metabolisms,were involved in the processes of Hg2+ photoreduction with the presence of algae under different light *** percentage reduction of Hg2+ decreased from 15% to 11% when living and dead AF concentrations increased by 10 times (from 106 to 105 cells/mL),and decreased from11% to ~9% in the case of living and dead MA *** can adsorb Hg2+ and decrease the concentration of free Hg2+,thus inhibiting Hg2+ photoreduction,especially under the conditions with high concentrations of *** significant differences were found in percentage reduction of Hg2+ between living and dead treatments of algae *** results are of great importance for understanding the role of algae in Hg2+ photoreduction.

Mercury isotope variations in surface soils in different contaminated areas in Guizhou Province,China

Guizhou Province is known as a heavily Hg-polluted area in China due to its special geochemical background and complicated Hg emission *** this study,we investigated the Hg isotope compositions of surface soil samples in the Hg mining area,zinc smelting area,coal combustion area,which are known to be the typical pollution regions of Hg in this *** also compared the Hg isotopic fingerprints of primary Hg sources,such as hydrothermal Hg-bearing ores,coals and atmospheric Hg *** to our study,Hg stored in surface soils in different pollution regions in Guizhou Province displays a wide range of both mass dependent fractionation(MDF,δ202Hg) and mass independent fractionation(MIF,△199Hg).δ 202 Hg varies by 2.0‰ and △199Hg varies by 0.25‰ in the investigated surface *** study demonstrated that using a "MDF-MIF" two dimensional Hg isotope system could be particularly useful in discriminating Hg sources in soils.

Translocation and distribution of mercury in biomasses from subtropical forest ecosystems:evidence from stable mercury isotopes

To understand its source,distribution,storage,and translocation in the subtropical forest ecosystems,mercury(Hg)concentrations and stable isotopes in forest biomass tissues(foliage,branch,bark,and trunk)were investigated at Ailao Mountain National Nature Reserve,Southwest *** total Hg(THg)concentrations in the samples show the following trend:mature foliage(57±19 ng g-1)>bark(11±4.0 ng g-1)>branch(5.4±2.5 ng g-1)>trunk(1.6±0.7 ng g-1).Using the measured THg concentrations and the quantity of respective biomasses,the Hg pools in the forest are:wood(60±26μg m-2)>bark(51±18μg m-2)>foliage(41±11μg m-2)>branch(26±8.3μg m-2).The tree biomasses displayed negativeδ202Hg(-1.83‰to-3.84‰)andΔ199Hg(-0.18‰to-0.62‰).The observedΔ200Hg(-0.08‰to 0.04‰)is not significantly from zero.AΔ199Hg/Δ201Hg ratio of 1.05 was found in tree biomasses,suggesting that mercury has undergone Hg(Ⅱ)photoreduction processes.A Hg-isotope based binary mixing model suggests that Hg in the tree biomasses mainly originated from foliage uptake of atmospheric Hg0,constituting 67%,80%,and 77%of Hg in wood,branch,and bark,*** study sheds new light on the transportation and sources of Hg in the subtropical forest ecosystems.

Mercury speciation and spatial distribution in surface waters of the Yarlung Zangbo River,Tibet

The Yarlung Zangbo River is the highest river in the *** flows from west to east through the southern part of *** mercury(Hg)speciation and distribution in surface waters and soils near the bank of the Yarlung Zangbo River and its two tributaries,the Lhasa and Niyang Rivers,were investigated in June ***,major water quality parameters were also measured at the same *** Hg(THg)and total methylmercury(TMeHg)concentrations in surface waters of the Yarlung Zangbo River ranged from 1.46 to 4.99 ng/L and from 0.06 to 0.29 ng/L,respectively,representing the background levels in river systems of the Tibetan *** Hg(PHg)accounted for 69%of the THg,and the two Hg species had a significant relationship(r=0.990,P<0.01).Approximately 61%of the spatial distribution of THg was controlled by the concentrations of total suspended particles(TSP).Reactive Hg(RHg)concentrations ranged from 0.10 to 0.36 ng/L,and this fraction may play a weak role in terms of the transport and fate of Hg in surface *** methylmercury(DMeHg)constituted 71%of the TMeHg and was significantly correlated with TMeHg(r=0.746,P<0.01).The spatial distribution of TMeHg is not strongly affected by environmental factors such as THg,RHg,temperature,pH,dissolved organic carbon(DOC),and *** addition,the inflow of both the Lhasa and Niyang Rivers probably influences the concentrations of THg in surface waters of the mainstream, but such an effect is not obvious for TMeHg.

Characteristics and distributions of atmospheric mercury emitted from anthropogenic sources in Guiyang, southwestern Chin

Continuous measurements of speciated atmo- spheric mercury （Hg）, including gaseous elemental mer- cury （GEM）, particulate mercury （PHg）, and reactive gaseous mercury （RGM） were conducted in Guizhou Pro- vince, southwestern China. Guiyang Power Plant （GPP）, Guiyang Wujiang Cement Plant, Guizhou Aluminum Plant （GAP）, and Guiyang Forest Park （GFP） in Guiyang were selected as study sites. Automatic Atmospheric Mercury Speciation Analyzers （Tekran 2537A） were used for GEM analysis. PHg and RGM were simultaneously collected by a manual sampling system, including elutriator, coupler/ impactor, KCl-coated annular denuder, and a filter holder. Results show that different emission sources dominate different species of Hg. The highest average GEM value was 22.2 ±28.3 ng·m-3 and the lowest 6.1 ± 3.9 ng·m-3, from samples collected at GPP and GAP, respectively. The maximum average PHg was 1984.9 pg·m-3 and the mini- mum average 55.9 pg·m-3, also from GPP and GAP, respectively. Similarly, the highest average RGM of 68.8 pg·m-3 was measured at GPP, and the lowest level of 20.5 pg·m-3 was found at GAP. We conclude that coal combustion sources are still playing a key role in GEM; traffic contributes significantly to PHg; and domestic pol- lution dominates RGM.

Seasonal distribution of total mercury and methylmercury in sediments of the Wujiangdu Reservoir,Guizhou,China

The concentrations of total mercury and methylmercury in sediments were determined at the dam of the Wujiangdu Reservoir in different seasons. Total mercury (HgT) levels in the whole sediment profile were 254.2±47.0 ng/g in winter, 254.2±31.6 ng/g in spring, and 256.7±60.8 ng/g in summer, without significant variations in different seasons or at different depths. In contrast, the methylmercury (MeHg) compounds were most abundant at the sediment-water interface and decreased progressively with depth. MeHg contents of the sediments during different seasons are highly dependent on microbial activity, and seem to be higher when Hg (II)-methylating microorganisms are active. Thus, MeHg levels tend to rise in the loci where nutrient supplies and biological productivity are favorable. The percentage of HgT that is present as MeHg in the sediments increased gradually from December 2003 to April 2004 and to July 2004.

Distribution and speciation of mercury in the Hongfeng Reservoir,Guizhou Province, China

The water, pore water, sediment, and fish samples were collected from the Hongfeng Reservoir in No- vember 2003 and February 2004 in accordance with trace metal protocols. The average concentrations of total mer- cury (THg), dissolved mercury (DHg), reactive mercury, dissolved gaseous mercury, total methylmercury, and dis- solved methylmercury in the water columns were 8.00, 5.70, 0.63, 0.05, 0.16, and 0.07 ng/L, respectively. THg and DHg in the water columns, THg in pore water and THg in lake sediments of the Hongfeng Reservoir showed the level of mercury in the Hongfeng Reservoir was higher than in other natural waters in the world due to the loading of a lot of waste water with relatively high concentrations of mercury, whereas methylmercury concentrations in fish (wet weight) varied from 1.73–51.00 ng/g, much lower than in most remote lakes and reservoirs reported in northern Europe and North America. Methylmercury distributions in pore water and sediments showed methylation oc- curred mainly in the upper several centimeters of sediment cores in the Hongfeng Reservoir. The concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, total suspended particles, total Hg, and methylmercury were higher at Houwu than those at Daba in November 2003. It is suggested that other pollutants such as N and P from fishing farm and other waste water at Houwu,which resulted in deterioration of water quality, affected the concentrations and distributions of mercury species in the reservoir.
