A prototype for on-site generation of chlorinated disinfectant for use in rural aqueducts

Sodium hypochlorite has significant potential as a sanitation solution in hard-to-reach *** studies have investigated the optimal electrolysis parameters for its production with volumes greater than 1o *** study evaluated sodium hypochlorite production through electrolysis in a 22-L prototype and identified the optimal operating *** were performed using graphite electrodes with areas of 68.4 cm^(2) at the laboratory scale and 1865.0 cm^(2) at the prototype scale.A design for experiments with different operating times,chloride concentrations,and electric current intensities was *** optimal operating time,sodium chloride concentration,and current intensity at the laboratory scale were 120 min,150 g of chloride per liter,and 3 A,respectively,leading to the production of 5.02 g/L of the disinfectant with an energy efficiency of 12.21 mg of Cl_(2) per *** the prototype scale,the maximum sodium hypochlorite concentration of 3.99 g of chloride per liter was achieved with an operating time of 120 min,a sodium chloride concentration of 100 g of chloride per liter,and a current intensity of 70 A,reaching an energy efficiency of 42.56 mg of Cl_(2) per *** addition,this study evaluated the influences of the chloride concentration,current intensity,and operating time on the production of sodium hypochlorite at the two scales,and formulated the equations showing the trends of sodium hypochlorite production and energy efficiency in the electrochemical *** 22-L prototype model for production of this oxidizing substance is promising for disinfection of large volumes of water in areas that are difficult to access.

Production Cross-Section Estimates for Strongly-Interacting Electroweak-Symmetry Breaking Sector Resonances at Particle Colliders

We are exploring a generic strongly-interacting Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector(EWSBS) with the low-energy effective field theory for the four experimentally known particles(W_L~±,Z_l,h) and its dispersion-relation based unitary *** this contribution we provide simple estimates for the production cross-section of pairs of the EWSBS bosons and their resonances at proton-proton colliders as well as in a future e^-e^+(or potentially aμ^-μ^+) collider with a typical few-TeV *** examine the simplest production mechanisms,tree-level production through a W(dominant when quantum numbers allow) and the simple effective boson approximation(in which the electroweak bosons are considered as collinear partons of the colliding fermions).We exemplify with custodial isovector and isotensor resonances at 2 TeV,the energy currently being discussed because of a slight excess in the ATLAS 2-jet *** find it hard,though not unthinkable,to ascribe this excess to one of these W_lW_l rescattering *** isovector resonance could be produced at a rate smaller than,but close to earlier CMS exclusion bounds,depending on the parameters of the effective *** ZZ excess is then problematic and requires additional physics(such as an additional scalar resonance).The isotensor one(that would describe all charge combinations) has smaller cross-section.

Prey and predators perceive orb-web spider conspicuousness differently: evaluating alternative hypotheses for color polymorphism evolution

Color polymorphisms have been traditionally attributed to apostatic *** perception of color depends on the visual system of the *** models predict that differently perceived degrees of conspicuousness by two predator and prey species may cause the evolution of polymorphisms in the presence of anti-apostatic and apostatic *** spider Gasteracantha cancriformis(Araneidae)possesses several conspicuous color *** orb-web spiders,the prey attraction hypothesis states that conspicuous colors are prey lures that increase spider foraging success via flower ***,polymorphism could be maintained if each morph attracted a different prey species(multiple prey hypothesis)and each spider mimicked a different flower color(flower mimicry hypothesis).Conspicuous colors could be a warning signal to predators because of the spider's hard abdomen and *** predators could perceive morphs differently and exert different degrees of selective pressures(multiple predator hypothesis).We explored these 3 hypotheses using reflectance data and color vision modeling to estimate the chromatic and achromatic contrast of *** morphs as perceived by several potential prey and predator *** results revealed that individual taxa perceive the conspicuousness of morphs ***,the multiple prey hypothesis and,in part,the multiple predator hypothesis may explain the evolution of color polymorphism in ***,even in the presence of anti-apostatic *** flower mimicry hypothesis received support by color metrics,but not by color vision *** parameters not evaluated by color vision models could also affect the perception of morphs and influence morph survival and polymorphism stability.

Development of a 3D matrix for modeling mammalian spinal cord injury in vitro

Spinal cord injury affects millions of people around the world, however, limited therapies are available to improve the quality of life of these patients. Spinal cord injury is usually modeled in rats and mice using contusion or complete transection models and this has led to a deeper understanding of the molecular and cellular complexities of the injury. However, it has not to date led to development of successful novel therapies, this is in part due to the complexity of the injury and the difficulty of deciphering the exact roles and interactions of different cells within this complex environment. Here we developed a collagen matrix that can be molded into the 3D tubular shape with a lumen and can hence support cell interactions in a similar architecture to a spinal cord. We show that astrocytes can be successfully grown on this matrix in vitro and when injured, the cells respond as they do in vivo and undergo reactive gliosis, one of the steps that lead to formation of a glial scar, the main barrier to spinal cord regeneration. In the future, this system can be used to quickly assess the effect of drugs on glial scar protein activity or to perform live imaging of labeled cells after exposure to drugs.

Settlement predictions of footings on sands using probabilisticanalysis

The design of footings on sands is often controlled by settlement rather than bearing ***,settlement predictions are essential in the design of shallow ***,predicted settlements of footings are highly dependent on the chosen elastic modulus and the used *** paper presents the use of probabilistic analysis to evaluate the variability of predicted settlements of footings on sands,focusing on the load curve(predicted settlements)*** methodologies,the first-and second-order second-moment(FOSM and SOSM),and Monte Carlo simulation(MCS),for calculating the mean and variance of the estimated settlements through Schmertmann(1970)’s equation,are presented and *** soil beneath the footing is treated as an uncorrelated layered material,so the total settlement and variance are found by adding up the increments of the *** deformability modulus(ESi)is considered as the only independent random *** an example of application,a hypothetical case of a typical subsoil in the state of Espirito Santo,southeast of Brazil,is *** results indicate that there is a significant similarity between the SOSM and MCS methods,while the FOSM method underestimates the results due to the non-consideration of the high-order terms in Taylor’s *** contribution of the knowledge of the uncertainties in settlement prediction can provide a safer design.

Estimating individual tree volume is one of the essential building blocks in forest growth and yield models. Ecologically based taper equations provide accurate vol- ume predictions and allow classification by mer- chantable sizes, assisting in sustainable forest management. In the present study, ecoregion-based compatible volume systems for brutian pine and black pine in the three ecoregions of southern Turkey were developed. Several well-known taper functions were evaluated. A second- order continuous-time autoregressive error structure was used to correct the inherent autocorrelation in the hierar- chical data, allowing the model to be applied to irregularly spaced and unbalanced data. The compatible segmented model of Fang et al. （For Sci 46：1-12, 2000） best described the experimental data. It is therefore recommended for estimating diameter at a specific height, height to a specific diameter, merchantable volume, and total volume for the three ecoregions and two species analyzed. The nonlinearextra sum of squares method indicated differences in ecoregion and tree-specific taper functions. A different taper function should therefore be used for each pine spe- cies and ecoregion in southern Turkey. Using ecoregion- specific taper equations allows making more robust esti- mations and, therefore, will enhance the accuracy of diameter at different heights and volume predictions.
