AIm:To study the relation between hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 4 and microalbuminuria and renal impairment in relation to hepatic histology, and viremia in the absence of cryoglobulinemia, and to examine the effect of treatment on ***: Three hundred subjects, including 233 HCV genotype-4 infected patients, were tested for cryoglobulinemia, microalbuminuria, albumin creatinine ratio (ACR), urea, creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The parameters were measured again in the HCV patients after 48 wk of treatment with pegylated interferon and ***: Significantly higher levels of microalbumin- uria were detected in HCV-positive patients compared to HCV-negative controls (median 9.5 vs 5.9, respectively, Kruskal-Wallis P=0.017). Log microalbuminuria was significantly correlated with hepatic inflammation (r=0.13, P=0.036) and f ibrosis (r=0.12, P=0.061), but not with viral load (r=-0.03, P=0.610), or alanine transaminase (r=-0.03, P=0.617). Diabetes mellitus neither significantly moderated (χ2=0.13, P=0.720), nor mediated (Sobel test P=0.49) the HCV effect. HCV status was signifi cantly associated with log microalbu-minuria (χ2=4.97, P=0.026), adjusting for age, gender, diabetes, cryoglobulinemia, urea and creatinine. A positive HCV status was not significantly associated with low eGFR (mL/min every 1.73 m2) [odds ratio (OR): 0.5, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.2-1.4], nor with high ACR (OR: 1.7, 95% CI:0.7-4.1). End-of-treatment response (ETR) was achieved in 51.9% of patients. Individuals with ETR had significantly lower microalbuminuria post-treatment (χ2=8.19, P=0.004).CONCLUSION: HCV affected the development of microalbuminuria independent of diabetes or cryoglobulinemia. Combination therapy of pegylated interferon-ribavirin had a positive effect in reducing microalbuminuria.

AIm: To assess the diagnostic accuracy,of aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index(APRI) alone and with antischistosomal antibody(Ab) in patients with hepatitis C virus(HCV) and schistosomiasis coinfection. mETHODS: This retrospective study included medical records of three hundred and eighty three Egyptianmen patients who had undergone percutaneous liver biopsy between January 2006 to April 2014 in tertiary care hospital in Qatar for diagnosis or monitoring purpose were selected. Data of patients > 18 years of age were included in the study. The values of HCV RNA titer and antischistosomal antibody titer were also taken into consideration. Patients were excluded from the study if they had any other concomitant chronic liver disease,including; history of previous antiviral or interferon therapy,immunosuppressive,therapy,chronic hepatitis B infection,human immunodeficiency virus co-infection,autoimmune hepatitis,decompensated liver disease,hepatocellular carcinoma,prior liver transplantation,and if no data about the liver biopsy present. RESULTS: median age of patients was 46 years. About 7.1% had no fibrosis,whereas 30.4%,37.5%,20.4%,and 4.6% had fibrosis of stage Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ,and Ⅳ respectively. In bivariate analysis,APRI score,levels of AST,platelet count and age of patient showed statistically significant association with liver fibrosis(P mal antibody titer(P = 0.52) and HCV RNA titer(P = 0.79) failed to show a significant association. The respective AUC values for no fibrosis,significant fibrosis,severe fibrosis and cirrhosis of APRI score were 63%,73.2%,81.1% and 88.9% respectively. This showed good sensitivity and specificity of APRI alone for grading of liver fibrosis. But the inclusion of anti-Schistosoma antibody did not improve the prediction of fibrosis stage. CONCLUSION: The study results suggest that noninvasive biochemical markers like APRI are sensitive and specific in diagnosing the degree of fibrosis and cirrhosis in patient

In this study,we investigated how tree species affect N mineralization in connection to some soil properties and seconder metabolite levels of litter,in the soil of the old-est native forest *** the oldest pure communi-ties of Pinus nigra(PN),Fagus orientalis(FO),and Abies bornmuelleriana(AB)in the mountain range of mount Uludağ,Bursa,Turkey,annual net yield and N mineraliza-tion in the 0-5-and 5-20-cm soil layers were determined in a field incubation study over 1 *** locations were chosen from 1300 to 1600 m a.s.l.,and moisture content(%),pH,water-holding capacity(%),organic C,total N,and C/N ratio,and annual net mineral N yield of the soil and hydro-lyzed tannic acid and total phenolic compounds in litter were compared for these forest *** had the highest annual net Nmin yield(43.9±4.8 kg ha^(-1) a^(-1)),*** the lowest(30.5±4.2 kg ha^(-1) a^(-1)).Our findings show that in the oldest forest ecosystems,the seasonal soil moisture content and tree species play an essential role in N cycling and that hydrolyzed tannic acids and total phenolic compounds effectively control N *** acid and total phenolics in the litter were found to inhibit nitrification,but total phenolics were found to stimulate ammonification.

moringa oleifera is well known as a highly nutritious plant and a water purifier in fish *** fish has many impressive qualities making them very suitable for ***,this study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation of moringa oleifera aqueous extract(mOAE)at varying concentrations(0,100,200,and 400 mg/kg diet for 90 days)on growth performance,hematological,and some biochemical parameters of Nile ***,histological changes and immunohistochemical expression of caspase 3 in gills and livers were *** enhancements(Pmoglobin,packed cell volume,white blood cells,and total serum protein were observed in fish fed 200 mg mOAE/kg diet compared with other ***,a significant reduction(Pmg mOAE/kg diet revealed disturbance in the corresponding *** histological degenerative changes were detected in the gills and liver of fish fed 400 mg mOAE/kg *** comparison,fish fed 200 mg mOAE/kg diet showed the best histo-architectures of these organs compared with other *** immune expressions of caspase 3 were determined where gills and liver of fish fed 400 mg mOAE/kg diet revealed extensive number of positive caspase 3 cells indicating severe apoptotic ***,a dietary mOAE at 200 mg/kg diet is recommended to improve the growth performance,hematological parameters,liver and kidney functions in Nile ***,caution must be considered when using mOAE at a concentration over 200 mg/kg diet.

Expression levels ofβcatenin and galectin-3 in meningioma and their effect on brain invasion and recurrence:a tissue microarray study

Objective:meningiomas are neoplasms that arise from the meninges of the central nervous system(CNS).They constitute about25.6%of CNS tumors diagnosed in *** morphological variants of meningiomas display aggressive behavior,leading to brain-invasive growth *** meningiomas are usually treated by complete surgical excision,the risk of postoperative recurrence ***,additional biomarkers for predicting aggressive behavior must be *** study aims to explore the clinical and biological relevance of the protein expression levels ofβ-catenin and galectine-3 in meningioma and to understand the pathobiology of this ***:This retrospective study was carried out on 153 cases of meningioma by using tissue microarrays and immunohistochemistry forβ-catenin and ***:Highβ-catenin expression was significantly associated with transitional and meningiotheliomatous meningiomas,low tumor grade,low recurrence rate,and low incidence of brain ***,high galectin-3 expression was associated with brain invasion,recurrence,high tumor grade,and tumor *** regression analysis indicated that among all variables included in the model,β-catenin and galactin-3 expression levels were significant predictors of tumor recurrence(Pmeningioma recurrence but not in brain *** molecules could be important potential therapeutic targets and predictors for meningiomas.

Screening the Insecticidal Efficacy of Nano ZnO Synthesized via in-situ Polymerization of Crosslinked Polyacrylic Acid as a Template

Nano zinc oxide （ZnO） is a very useful and important material in many industrial and biological applications. In the present work, ZnO was synthesized by post thermal degradation of the precursor ＂zinc acetate di-hydrate＂ templated in crosslinked polyacrylic acid （PAA）. The crosslinked PAA template was prepared through an in-situ polymerization process adopted in presence of ammonium per sulphate, as an initiator, and N, Nt- methylene bis-acrylamide as the crosslinker. Variation of preparation parameters and their impact on the oxide stoichiometry, crystal structure, crystallite size and surface texture of the oxide were investigated. Energy dispersive X-ray technique （EDX）, X-ray diffraction （XRD） and scanning electron microscopy （SEm） were convincingly used to reveal the oxide structural features and characteristics. The performed bioassay tests indicated the efficacy of this method of preparation to produce nano ZnO with novel insecticidal activity against the greater wax moth, Galleria rnellonella.

Assessment of hepatic fibrosis in pediatric cases with hepatitis C virus in Egypt

AIm: To assess hepatic fibrosis and factors associated with its progression in children with HCV infection. mETHODS: At the Hepatology Unit,Cairo University Children's Hospital,a single liver biopsy was performed to 43 children with HCV infection after an informed consent between 1998-2004. Their mean age at liver biopsy was 8.67 ± 4.3 years. RESULTS: Among the 43 patients' biopsies,12 (27.9%) were having no fibrosis,20 (46.5%) mild fibrosis and 11 (25.6%) moderate to severe fibrosis. The median time for development of fibrosis was estimated to be 5.5 years. Developing fibrosis was significantly associated with shorter duration from first detected ALT elevation to biopsy (12 mo vs 1.2 mo,P = 0.015) and having higher levels of direct serum bilirubin (0.3 mg/dL vs 0.5 mg/dL,P = 0.048). No association was found between fibrosis stage and the presence of co-morbid conditions (P = 0.33). CONCLUSION: Hepatic fibrosis was present in 72.1% of children with HCV infection. The development of fibrosis was associated with higher levels of direct serum bilirubin. There was no significant association between fibrosis and age,duration of infection,risk factors,co-morbid conditions and most biochemical parameters.
