Residual ridge resorption(RRR)is the decrease in the jaw structure that follows tooth *** is a multifactorial disorder,but reports on the associated genetic factors are scarce,particularly amongst the *** study aimed to investigate the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)in fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 oncogene partner 2(FGFR1OP2)in RRR development in *** study included 192 individuals(RRR=96;controls=96)attending outpatient clinics at the College of Dentistry,King Saud *** and clinical data were collected,the digital panoramic dental radiograph was obtained,and mandibular residual ridge height was *** was extracted from saliva and genotyping was conducted on“Sequenom MassARRAY iPLEX”.Genotype and allele frequencies of three SNPs were calculated and *** age at first diagnosis and bone height were compared in the three genotypes of each *** age of the patients,age at first edentulism,and bone height ranged 21-80 years,12-70 years,and 13-34.6 mm,*** three genotypes of the studied SNPs(rs2279351,rs78054962 and rs2306852)were *** rs2279351 associated significantly with RRR,and the mutant C allele was highly *** association was observed for the other two *** genotypes of all SNPs had an influence on age at first edentulism and bone height,but the results were not statistically *** FGFR1OP2 plays a role in the process of rapid wound healing in the oral cavity,it may be playing a role in the development of RRR by influencing the rate of resorption of the *** rs2279351 may alter its expression and hence RRR *** study is limited due to small a sample size,and further large-scale studies are required to confirm this association and to consider rs2279351 as a possible marker of RRR development.

Nurses are one of the key human capitals among healthcare workers;forming the "heart" of the medical and health services（Director General of Health Malaysia, 2006）. Building future nursing practitioners who are knowledgeable and skilful is deemed necessary as they are challenged to constantly learn and grow nursing practice to developing occasion. Malaysia is expecting around 2,200 graduates from Ministry of Health colleges, 4,500 graduates from national public universities and private nursing colleges to achieve a total of about 6,700 nurse graduates to achieve the targeted norm of 1:200 nurses per patient population（Director General of Health Malaysia, 2006）. However, some nursing practitioners demonstrate low clinical competency that may result from the inability to consolidate lecture-learned with hands-on nursing expertise. With the high shortage of nurses in Malaysia, another huge number of incompetent nursing practitioners shall bring more harm to the country. The incapability to transfer theoretical knowledge to clinical nursing practice are attributed to desecration of the knowledge learned from taught classroom lesson due to different clinical practice realities. The problem represents an untapped resolution of how can knowledge transfer be supported in nursing knowledge learning. This apparent of poor transmitting of classroom knowledge to clinical practice event among nursing practitioner would undermine attempts to use knowledge more effectively. The study has significance for both theory and practice as it support the fall short of explaining transfer of clinical knowledge in nursing knowledge learning that has not been discussed beforehand from knowledge management viewpoint, thus create gaps in knowledge for further investigation. This overview summarizes recent advanced literature surveys on the synthesis of fluorine substituted 1,2,4-triazine containing various functional groups and/or the related hetero-polycyclic nitrogen systems have been reported. In addition, physical, chemical, and medicinal properties have been evaluated. The presence of fluorinated atoms often improves these properties with an increasing electronegativity. It, also, enhances the stability of formed carbanion and it improves the hydrophobic effects which have good biological activities.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by progressive loss of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons, leading to reduction in transmission through cholinergic fibers involved in processes of attention, learning, and memory. Mitochondria provide and regulate cellular energy and are crucial for proper neuronal activity and survival. Mitochondrial dysfunction is evident in early stages of AD and is involved in AD pathogenesis. This review focuses on the evidence supporting a clear association between amyloid-β toxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and neuronal damage/death in Alzheimer’s disease. To date, the beta amyloid (Aβ) cascade hypothesis still remains the main pathogenetic model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but its role in the majority of sporadic AD cases is uncertain. Furthermore, the “mitochondrial cascade hypothesis” could explain many of the biochemical, genetic, and pathological features of sporadic AD. This hypothesis promotes mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) as the basis for Alzheimer’s disease. The mutations could lead to energy failure, increased oxidative stress, and accumulation of Aβ, which in a vicious cycle reinforces the mtDNA damage and oxidative stress.

Fibre-Reinforced Generalized Thermoelastic Medium Subjected to Gravity Field

The present paper is aimed at studying the effects of thermal relaxation time and gravity of a two-dimensional problem with anisotropic semi-infinite solid media with the deformation of fiber-reinforced generalized thermoplastic. The harmonic function techniques are used. The thermal stresses, temperature and displacement have been obtained. These expressions are calculated numerically for two values of elastic constants for mediums M1 and M2 respectively. The results obtained are displayed by graphs to clear the phenomena physical meaning. The results indicate that the effect of gravity, relaxation times and parameters of fibre-reinforced of the material medium are very pronounced.

Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke in a Patient with a Past History of Intracranial Hemorrhage

Intravenous thrombolysis remains the gold standard in the management of acute ischemic stroke if the patient presents within the window period. Endovascular thrombectomy is another line of therapy in selected cases. Nonetheless, one of the most devastating complications of IV thrombolysis is intracranial hemorrhage (ICH);in such cases, the previous history of ICH is considered a potential contraindication to thrombolysis. Evidence regarding the safety of thrombolysis administration in patients with a previous history of ICH is scarce. We encountered a patient with acute ischemic stroke with a past history of hypertensive ICH. A 59-year-old female, presented with complete right-sided body weakness, global aphasia and gaze preference. A computed tomography (CT) brain perfusion scan revealed a mismatch suggestive of left middle cerebral artery (MCA) ischemic stroke. The patient received intravenous thrombolysis and showed significant clinical improvement with no subsequent complications or ICH. In reporting this case, we aim to provide evidence supporting the safety of thrombolytic therapy in selected cases with a previous history of ICH when no alternative line of management is available.

Diagnostic value of biomarkers for sepsis in adult patients in the emergency department: Don't forget the neutrophil-lymphocyte count ratio

Objective: To determine and compare the diagnostic efficiency of various biomarkers [C-reactive protein, neutrophil percentage, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLCR), lactate, procalcitonin, blood culture] in the identification of septic patients in emergency department (ED), and to assess the predictive value of combination of markers. Methods: This was a prospective, single centre study conducted in the ED of an urban, tertiary care hospital. We included patients who were admitted to the ED with symptoms of a possible infection. Blood cultures and serum measurement of the biomarkers were collected from 131 patients. Patients were determined to be septic or non-septic, based on the systemic inflammatory response syndrome criteria and the diagnosis was made at the ED. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and area under curves (AUC) were calculated. Results: A total of 126 patients, 61 with sepsis and 65 without sepsis were eventually included in the study. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio displayed the highest accuracy in diagnosing sepsis (AUC 0.735, 95% CI=0648-0.822, P<0.001). The best combination of markers in predicting sepsis was NLCR and white blood cell (AUC: 0.801, 95% CI=0.724-0.878, P<0.001). Conclusions: The results of this small study showed that NLCR outperforms other markers in diagnosing sepsis in ED. It is readily available, cost efficient, non invasive and independent. It may be insufficient to rely on this single marker to diagnose sepsis, so some other diagnostic utilities should be taken into account as one part of the overall assessment. Our study also showed that combination of NLCR and white blood cell provides the highest diagnostic accuracy. More large scale studies across different population groups will be needed to confirm this finding.

Polymerase Chain Reaction-Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) Profile of Bacterial Community from Agricultural Soils in Bauchi, North-East Nigeria

The population dynamics of bacterial community was investigated in three Agricultural soils, designated as Loamy sand (A), Peaty coarse (B) and Loamy coarse sand (C) in North-East, Nigeria. The soil chemical properties were characterized to fully understand their nature. Metagenomic approach was used to extract soil DNA using the fast DNA Spin Kit extraction technique. The PCR-electrophoresed DNA bands were excised and subjected to a full scale Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis. DGGE fingerprinting for the PCR-16S rDNA product revealed a diverse profile of complex population of bacterial community in the study area. The study shows that more bacterial community can be fully investigated using molecular techniques rather than traditional culture method. The implication of the results obtained is discussed.

An Explicit Single-Step Nonlinear Numerical Method for First Order Initial Value Problems (IVPs)

Interest in the construction of efficient methods for solving initial value problems that have some peculiar properties with it or its solution is recently gaining wide popularity. Based on the assumption that the solution is representable by nonlinear trigonometric expressions, this work presents an explicit single-step nonlinear method for solving first order initial value problems whose solution possesses singularity. The stability and convergence properties of the constructed scheme are also presented. Implementation of the new method on some standard test problems compared with those discussed in the literature proved its accuracy and efficiency.
