Major depressive disorder(MDD)is a highly heterogeneous mental disorder,and its complex etiology and unclear mechanism are great obstacles to the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.Studies have shown that abnormal functions of the visual cortex have been reported in MDD patients,and the actions of several antidepressants coincide with improvements in the structure and synaptic functions of the visual cortex.In this review,we critically evaluate current evidence showing the involvement of the malfunctioning visual cortex in the pathophysiology and therapeutic process of depression.In addition,we discuss the molecular mechanisms of visual cortex dysfunction that may underlie the pathogenesis of MDD.Although the precise roles of visual cortex abnormalities in MDD remain uncertain,this undervalued brain region may become a novel area for the treatment of depressed patients.

Premature ovarian insufficiency(POI)is a heterogeneous female disorder characterized by the loss of ovarian function before the age of 40.It represents a significant detriment to female fertility.However,the known POI-causative genes currently account for only a fraction of cases.To elucidate the genetic factors underlying POI,we conducted whole-exome sequencing on a family with three fertile POI patients and identified a deleterious missense variant in RNF111.In a subsequent replication study involving 1,030 POI patients,this variant was not only confirmed but also accompanied by the discovery of three additional predicted deleterious RNF111 variants.These variants collectively account for eight cases,representing 0.78%of the study cohort.A further study involving 500 patients with diminished ovarian reserve also identified two additional RNF111 variants.Notably,RNF111 encodes an E3 ubiquitin ligase with a regulatory role in the TGF-β/BMP signaling pathway.Our analysis revealed that RNF111/RNF111 is predominantly expressed in the oocytes of mice,monkeys,and humans.To further investigate the functional implications of RNF111 variants,we generated two mouse models:one with a heterozygous missense mutation(Rnf111+/M)and another with a heterozygous null mutation(Rnf111^(+/-)).Both mouse models exhibited impaired female fertility,characterized by reduced litter sizes and small ovarian reserve.Additionally,RNA-seq and quantitative proteomics analysis unveiled that Rnf111 haploinsufficiency led to dysregulation in female gonad development and negative regulation of the BMP signaling pathway within mouse ovaries.In conclusion,our findings strongly suggest that monoallelic deleterious variants in RNF111 can impair female fertility and induce POI in both humans and mice.

With the rapid development of internet technology,security protection of information has become more and more prominent,especially information encryption.Considering the great advantages of chaotic encryption,we propose a 2D-lag complex logistic map with complex parameters(2D-LCLMCP)and corresponding encryption schemes.Firstly,we present the model of the 2D-LCLMCP and analyze its chaotic properties and system stability through fixed points,Lyapunov exponent,bifurcation diagram,phase diagram,etc.Secondly,a block cipher algorithm based on the 2D-LCLMCP is proposed,the plaintext data is preprocessed using a pseudorandom sequence generated by the 2D-LCLMCP.Based on the generalized Feistel cipher structure,a round function F is constructed using dynamic S-box and DNA encoding rules as the core of the block cipher algorithm.The generalized Feistel cipher structure consists of two F functions,four XOR operations,and one permutation operation per round.The symmetric dynamic round keys that change with the plaintext are generated by the 2D-LCLMCP.Finally,experimental simulation and performance analysis tests are conducted.The results show that the block cipher algorithm has low complexit,good diffusion and a large key space.When the block length is 64 bits,only six rounds of encryption are required to provide sufficient security and robustness against cryptographic attacks.

Plant viruses are a group of intracellular pathogens that persistently threaten global food security.Significant advances in plant virology have been achieved by Chinese scientists over the last 20 years,including basic research and technologies for preventing and controlling plant viral diseases.Here,we review these milestones and advances,including the identification of new crop-infecting viruses,dissection of pathogenic mechanisms of multiple viruses,examination of multilayered interactions among viruses,their host plants,and virus-transmitting arthropod vectors,and in-depth interrogation of plantencoded resistance and susceptibility determinants.Notably,various plant virus-based vectors have also been successfully developed for gene function studies and target gene expression in plants.We also recommend future plant virology studies in China.

Carotenoids are indispensable for human health,and citrus fruit are a crucial source of dietary carotenoids.Bagging,an important orchard practice to enhance fruit economic value,is widely used in many horticultural crops,including citrus fruit.The bagged‘Majiayou’pomelo(Citrus grandis)produces vivid deeper red pulp,a fantastic agronomic trait,but the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism remains largely unexplored.Here,the enhancement of carotenoids,especially lycopene,was confirmed by HPLC analysis of carotenoids in the pulp of bagged fruit and controls.qRT-PCR analysis of the 14 carotenoid pathway genes further revealed that upregulated PSY and downregulated CCD1 expression in bagged fruit could directly enhance the accumulation of carotenoids.In addition,RNA-seq analysis identified 311 differentially expressed genes(DEGs)in the bagged fruit and controls in five developmental stages.Weighted gene co-expression network analysis(WGCNA)identified 13 critical candidate genes among the DEGs,which are closely associated with lycopene accumulation.The underlying regulatory mechanism of these candidate genes on the transcription of carotenoid pathway genes in the bagged fruit was discussed.Considering that the candidate genes were involved in the corresponding metabolic pathways,the increase in sucrose content and decrease in ABA in bagged fruit were also identified,implying that these candidate genes may be indirectly related to carotenoid enhancement in pulp by regulating phytohormones,primary metabolism,and stress responses.The results provide new insights into the potential regulatory mechanism of lycopene enhancement in the pulp of bagged‘Majiayou’pomelo,facilitating breeding and orchard management efforts to improve the nutritional quality and esthetic value of citrus,and perhaps other fruit crops.

Concerns Arise:Wheat Allergy Risk in Pre-packaged Food Products from China

Understanding and monitoring the cross-contamination of food allergens is crucial for safeguarding public health and ensuring food safety. Food allergen risk assessment， derived from classical toxicological principles， can identify and quantify the risk of allergies. This study aimed to investigate the risk of wheat allergic reactions to prepackaged foods from China through the utilization of food allergen risk assessment. A total of 575 products have been surveyed， wheat/gluten， milk and egg were major allergens labelled on products. According to voluntary incidental trace allergen labelling 3.0 (VITAL? 3.0) program， the number of products belonged to Action Level 2 were 303. Integration of PAL analysis indicated that 9.57% products would pose a potential risk to wheat allergic individuals. The probabilistic risk assessment results suggest that 7984 allergic reactions may arise among wheat-allergic consumers during 10，000 eating occasions due to the consumption of pre-packaged food products with incorrect wheat-related allergen labelling. This study demonstrated that a risk assessment-based approach can support the guidance of allergen labelling and management of food allergen for pre-packaged food products， providing protection for allergic individuals in food consumption and for food manufacturers in food production and trade.

High-throughput maize phenotyping at both organ and plant levels plays a key role in molecular breeding for increasing crop yields. Although the rapid development of light detection and ranging(Li DAR) provides a new way to characterize three-dimensional(3 D) plant structure, there is a need to develop robust algorithms for extracting 3 D phenotypic traits from Li DAR data to assist in gene identification and selection. Accurate 3 D phenotyping in field environments remains challenging, owing to difficulties in segmentation of organs and individual plants in field terrestrial Li DAR data. We describe a two-stage method that combines both convolutional neural networks(CNNs) and morphological characteristics to segment stems and leaves of individual maize plants in field environments. It initially extracts stem points using the Point CNN model and obtains stem instances by fitting 3 D cylinders to the points. It then segments the field Li DAR point cloud into individual plants using local point densities and 3 D morphological structures of maize plants. The method was tested using 40 samples from field observations and showed high accuracy in the segmentation of both organs(F-score =0.8207) and plants(Fscore =0.9909). The effectiveness of terrestrial Li DAR for phenotyping at organ(including leaf area and stem position) and individual plant(including individual height and crown width) levels in field environments was evaluated. The accuracies of derived stem position(position error =0.0141 m), plant height(R^(2)>0.99), crown width(R^(2)>0.90), and leaf area(R^(2)>0.85) allow investigating plant structural and functional phenotypes in a high-throughput way. This CNN-based solution overcomes the major challenges in organ-level phenotypic trait extraction associated with the organ segmentation, and potentially contributes to studies of plant phenomics and precision agriculture.

Major depressive disorder(MDD) is the most common mental disorder. Over 95 million people in China suffer from MDD(Huang et al.,2019). Currently available antidepressants have delayed onset and a low cure rate(Malhi and Mann, 2018). Genetic and psychosocial factors, as well as their interactions, play an important role in the response to antidepressants for MDD patients(Uher, 2011;Gonda et al., 2019;Musci et al., 2019). Understanding the underlying associations and mechanisms may help to improve the first-episode cure rate in MDD patients.

The SARS-CoV-2 variants have been emerging and have made great challenges to current vaccine and pandemic control strategies.It is urgent to understand the current immune status of various Chinese populations given that the preexisting immunity has been established by national vaccination or ex posure to past variants.Using sera from 85 individuals(including 21 convalescents of natural infection,15 cases which suffered a breakthrough infection after being fully vaccinated,and 49 healthy vaccinees),we showed signifcantly enhanced neutralizing activities against SRAS-CoV-2 variants in convalescent sera,especially those who had been fully vaccinated.The neut ralizing antibodies against Omicron were detectable in 75%of convalescents and 4.9%of healthy vaccinees(p=0.006),with a GMT of 289.5,180.9-463.3,and 42.6,31.3-59,respetively.However,the neutralizing activities were weaker in young convalescents(aged<18y),with a detectable rate of 50%and a GMT of 46.4 against Omicron.We also examined and found no pan.sarbecovirus neutralizing activities in vaccinated SARS-CoV-I survivors.A booster dose could further increase the breadth and magnitude of neutralization against WT and variants of concern(VOCs)to different degrees.In addition,we showed that COVID-19-inactivated vaccines can elicit Omicron-specific T-cell responses.The positive rates of ELISpot reactions were 26.7%(4/15)and 43.8%(7/16)in the full vaccination group and the booster vaccination group,respectively,although without statistically significant difference.The neutralizing antibody titers declined while T-cell responses remain consistent over 6 months.These findings will inform the optimization of public health vaccination and intervention strategies to protect diverse populations against SARS-CoV-2 variants.Advances.Breakthrough infection significantly boosted neutralizing activities against SARS-CoV-2 variants a compared to booster immunization with inaclivated vaccine.Vaccine-induced vir us-specific T-cell immunity,on the other hand,may compensate for the s

改善社区公共绿地是社区公共空间治理的重要内容。基于随机价值理论,充分考虑居民偏好的不确定性,以沈阳市、太原市、北京市、南京市和广州市5个中心城市40个社区的居民调查为例,实证分析了其对社区公共绿地改善的支付意愿及影响因素。结果表明:1)各城市价格升序和降序价值引导技术下居民在给定价格水平上给予肯定回答的占比差异不大,但沈阳市和太原市居民给予肯定回答的占比均低于其他城市。2)价格升序引导技术下,所有城市受访居民支付意愿均值的样本平均数为18.35元/年,标准差的样本平均数为2.72;降序引导技术下,均值和标准差的样本平均数分别为18.57元/年和2.48。3)南北方城市居民支付意愿分布有所差异,南方城市支付意愿均值和标准差均高于北方城市。4)微观因素中受教育程度、对居委会的信任度、收入水平、家庭结构、风险偏好及对社区绿地覆盖率的满意度对支付意愿产生显著正向影响,社区环境质量状况感知、年龄及距绿地的距离呈显著负向影响。5)宏观因素中居住区域及居住社区类型对支付意愿产生显著正向影响,居住城市呈显著负向影响。建议贴合居民预期与需求、重视社区绿地空间再造、激活社区社会资本及增强居民社区认同感和归属感,以强化其对社区生态空间营造的责任感,进而提高社区环境治理参与水平。
