Numerical Study of Piles Group under Seismic Loading in Frictinal Soil—Inclination Effect

Recent devastating earthquakes in some countries, such as Pakistan, Turkey, Algeria and China, call to the mind the high risk exposure of Lebanon which is located over an active seismic zone. Many experts shared the view that major seismic event may occur in Lebanon in the future. Moreover, many earthquakes, of low magnitudes between three and four, have been registered in Lebanon during 2008. These events have increased the anxiety of Lebanese people because of the poor quality of the constructions and their behavior under moderate or severe earthquake events. The efficient way to minimize seismic effects, material and human losses, is the prevention. The system piles-foundation is an appropriate way and widely used to ensure the stability of constructions when subjected to seismic excitation. It seems necessary to study the interaction of pile-foundation-pile-cap-structure in the case of non linear soil behavior and the interface pile-soil. The study will be also conducted by using measures recorded during real earthquakes for example in Turkey (Kocaeli, 1999). In this paper, we present a numerical modeling of the interaction of using FLAC3D software. According to soil behavior and pile inclination, parametric studies are also performed. The analysis of the results could give the better piles group configuration in order to minimize the seismic effect on the structures.

随着我国菊花育种活跃度的不断提升,菊花品种的形态多样性不断丰富,迫切需要提高菊花DUS测试指南适用性。本研究连续2年对210份形态多样的菊花品种进行观测统计,以NY/T 2228—2012《植物新品种特异性、一致性和稳定性测试指南菊花》涉及的68个性状及本研究群体中发现的9个多样性性状或表达状态为观测依据,对现有菊花品种DUS测试指南做出优化,建议在2012年版测试指南中增加9个测试性状,剔除1个选测性状,并调整2个性状的名称表述,旨在提高菊花新品种鉴定的效率。

Review: Enhancing power transfer capability through flexible AC transmission system devices: a review

Global demand for power has significantly increased, but power generation and transmission capacities have not increased proportionally with this demand. As a result, power consumers suffer from various problems, such as voltage and frequency instability and power quality issues. To overcome these problems, the capacity for available power transfer of a transmission network should be enhanced. Researchers worldwide have addressed this issue by using flexible AC transmission system （FACTS） devices. We have conducted a comprehensive review of how FACTS controllers are used to enhance the avail- able transfer capability （ATC） and power transfer capability （PTC） of power system networks. This review includes a discussion of the classification of different FACTS devices according to different factors. The popularity and applications of these devices are discussed together with relevant statistics. The operating principles of six major FACTS devices and their application in increasing ATC and PTC are also presented. Finally, we evaluate the performance of FACTS devices in ATC and PTC improvement with respect to different control algorithms.

A computer aided detection framework for mammographic images using fisher linear discriminant and nearest neighbor classifier

Today, mammography is the best method for early detection of breast cancer. Radiologists failed to detect evident cancerous signs in approximately 20% of false negative mammograms. False negatives have been identified as the inability of the radiologist to detect the abnormalities due to several reasons such as poor image quality, image noise, or eye fatigue. This paper presents a framework for a computer aided detection system that integrates Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Fisher Linear Discriminant (FLD), and Nearest Neighbor Classifier (KNN) algorithms for the detection of abnormalities in mammograms. Using normal and abnormal mammograms from the MIAS database, the integrated algorithm achieved 93.06% classification accuracy. Also in this paper, we present an analysis of the integrated algorithm’s parameters and suggest selection criteria.

Raman tensor of AlN bulk single crystal

The angle dependence of optical phonon modes of an AlN bulk single crystal from the m-plane（1100） and c-plane（0001） surfaces, respectively, is investigated by polarized Raman spectroscopy in a backscattering configuration at room temperature. Corresponding Raman selection rules are derived according to measured scattering geometries to illustrate the angle dependence. The angle-dependent intensities of phonon modes are discussed and compared to theoretical scattering intensities, yielding the Raman tensor elements of A1（TO）, E22, E1（TO）, and A1（LO） phonon modes and the relative phase difference between the two complex elements of A1（TO）. Furthermore, the Raman tensor of wurtzite AlN is compared with that of wurtzite ZnO reported in previous work, revealing the intrinsic differences of lattice vibration dynamics between AlN and ZnO.

Pollution Scenarios through Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling Based on Real Measurements of Selected Urban Areas in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Power requirements in the city of Al Mirfa in western Abu Dhabi are covered by the Al Mirfa Power and Distillation Plant. Comprehensive emission inventories for 2007-2008 were used to execute an ENVIMAN (OPSIS AB Company, Sweden) Gaussian dispersion model to predict ambient ground level concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM10) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) at selected receptors considering all emission sources located in the area. Two years of meteorological data was used in conjunction with the dispersion model to compute NOx and SO2 levels in and around the power plant. To validate the model, computed results were compared with the average values measured at a fixed Air Quality Station in Al Mirfa city. The highest hourly, daily and annual ground level concentrations under exiting meteorological conditions were then analyzed. The computed results for the study area revealed that daily, hourly and annual concentration values did not exceed the Federal Environment Agency (FEA) standard, and the contribution of plant emissions to the ground levels pollutants in the surrounded area range from 3.1 to 109 μg/m3 for NO2, and 1.1 to 41.4 μg/m3 for CO. This study can be considered a baseline study for any future expansion in the plant. Based on these results, mitigation strategies are not required.
