Rationale: Co-infection of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) and Leishmania spp. has impact on clinical and therapeutic outcomes of leishmaniases. Most studies do not present the identification of Leishmania species causing American tegumentary leishmaniasis in co-infections. In the Americas, Leishmania(L.) Viannia(V.) braziliensis and L.(V.) guyanensis have been identified. Patient concerns: In this study, two cases of American tegumentary leishmaniasis in patients infected with HIV are described. Patients presented several lesions with rapid dissemination and mucosal involvement. Diagnosis: Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. amazonensis was identified by molecular test. Interventions: The patients were treated with conventional therapies for HIV infection and American tegumentary leishmaniasis. Outcomes: In co-infection, the clinical manifestations are atypical and the treatment response can be impaired. Lessons: These cases show that HIV infection impacts L. amazonensis infection and point to the relevance of identifying Leishmania species, which can lead to a better patient management.

The frost growth on cold surfaces in evaporators is an undesirable phenomenon which becomes a problem for the thermal efficiency of the refrigeration systems because the ice layer acts as a thermal insulation,drastically reducing the rate of heat transfer in the *** accumulation implies an increase in energy demand and a decrease in the performance of various components involved in the refrigeration process,reducing its efficiency and making it necessary to periodically remove the frost,resulting in expenses for the defrost *** the present work,a numerical-experimental analysis was performed in order to understand the formation process of porous ice in flat plates with different surface treatments and *** understanding is of utmost importance to minimize the formation of porous ice on cold surfaces and improve equipment efficiency and *** this context,a low-cost experimental apparatus was developed,enabling an experimental analysis of the phenomenon under *** environmental conditions evaluated are the temperature of the cold surface,roomtemperature,humidity,and air *** material of the surfaces under study are aluminum,copper,and brass with different surface finishes,designated as smooth,grooved(hydrophilic),and varnished(hydrophobic).The numerical-experimental analysis demonstrates measurements and simulations of the thickness,surface temperature,and growth rate of the porous ice layer as a function of the elapsed *** numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results,indicating that the varnished surface,with hydrophobic characteristics,presents greater difficulty in providing the ***,the results showed that application of a coating allowed a significant reduction on the frost formation process contributing to the improvement of thermal efficiency and performance of refrigeration systems.

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is a major health problem in the Western world. The diagnostic process is a challenge in all health systems for many reasons: There are often no specific symptoms; lower abdominal symptoms are very common and mostly related to nonneoplastic diseases, not CRC; diagnosis of CRC is mainlybased on colonoscopy, an invasive procedure; and the resource for diagnosis is usually scarce. furthermore, the available predictive models for CRC are based on the evaluation of symptoms, and their diagnostic accuracy is limited. Moreover, diagnosis is a complex process involving a sequence of events related to the patient, the initial consulting physician and the health system. Understanding this process is the first step in identifying avoidable factors and reducing the effects of diagnostic delay on the prognosis of CRC. In this article, we describe the predictive value of symptoms for CRC detection. We summarize the available evidence concerning the diagnostic process, as well as the factors implicated in its delay and the methods proposed to reduce it. We describe the different prioritization criteria and predictive models for CRC detection, specifically addressing the two-week wait referral guideline from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence in terms of efficacy, efficiency and diagnostic accuracy. finally, we collected information on the usefulness of biomarkers, specifically the faecal immunochemical test, as non-invasive diagnostic tests for CRC detection in symptomatic patients.

The pisco and wine industry produces hundreds of tons of grape pomace each year in Chile,generating environmental problems,and demanding urgent strategies for its *** aim of this work was to study the pisco grape pomace based on a physicochemical characterization,an iron/copper speciation analysis,and the optimization for polyphenols recovery,establishing the polyphenolic profile,antioxidant properties,and the fe^(2+)/Cu^(2+) chelating activity,to promote their revalorization as an ingredient with potential application in the food *** chemical characterization showed mainly high values for crude protein(15.36%dw)and potassium(9240.66 mg/kg).The fe/Cu speciation depicted that iron and copper soluble forms in pisco pomace flour represented 70.57%and 52.18%,respectively,regarding total *** optimized extract showed mainly pyrogallol,catechin and epicatechin,with concentrations of 1078.43±60.14μg/g,883.20±7.57μg/g and,751.76±23.04μg/g,respectively,with a relevant antioxidant capacity by Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity(ORAC)of 1402.15μmol TE/g dw GPE and,a better chelating ability to complex fe^(2+) than Cu^(2+).The pisco pomace was for the first time chemically characterize,showing it as a potential source of minerals and antioxidant biocompounds,making it a good candidate for nutritional applications,as a rich source of organic matter or even could be potentially utilized to produce value-added commodities,toward a circular economy.

Objective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional and patient-reported outcomes,and their correlation,after percutaneous bone-anchored hearing aid(BAHA)***:A prospective study was conducted between January 2018 and December 2020 in a tertiary care *** adult patients who were implanted with a percutaneous BAHA device during this evaluation period were included in the *** auditory function and patients reported outcome measures(PROMs)were assessed in the preoperative period and 6 months after the implant *** PROMs included a generic form(Medical Outcome Study 36 Short form Healthy Survey(MOS Sf-36)),and three disease-specific forms(Hearing Handicap Inventory(HHI),Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life Scale(SADLS),and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI)).Results:Twenty-two patients with an average age of 53 years were included in the *** overall functional gain with the BAHA in sound-field pure tone average(PTA)was 29 dB,with no statistically significant differences according to surgical indication(f(3,18)=2.319,p=0.110).The greater the preoperative air-bone gap,the greater the functional gain obtained(r=0.505,pfound a significant improvement in HHI scores(pficant increase in overall SADLS scores(pf percutaneous BAHA *** did not verify any statistically significant correlation between functional and PROMs ***:The BAHA is a safe and effective alternative hearing rehabilitation option in selected *** PROMs results prove patient's overall satisfaction.

It is important to understand how ballistic materials respond to impact from projectiles such that informed decisions can be made in the design process of protective armour systems. Ballistic testing is a standards-based process where materials are tested to determine whether they meet protection, safety and performance criteria. for the V50ballistic test, projectiles are fired at different velocities to determine a key design parameter known as the ballistic limit velocity(BLV), the velocity above which projectiles perforate the target. These tests, however, are destructive by nature and as such there can be considerable associated costs, especially when studying complex armour materials and systems. This study proposes a unique solution to the problem using a recent class of machine learning system known as the Generative Adversarial Network(GAN). The GAN can be used to generate new ballistic samples as opposed to performing additional destructive experiments. A GAN network architecture is tested and trained on three different ballistic data sets, and their performance is compared. The trained networks were able to successfully produce ballistic curves with an overall RMSE of between 10 and 20 % and predicted the V50BLV in each case with an error of less than 5 %. The results demonstrate that it is possible to train generative networks on a limited number of ballistic samples and use the trained network to generate many new samples representative of the data that it was trained on. The paper spotlights the benefits that generative networks can bring to ballistic applications and provides an alternative to expensive testing during the early stages of the design process.
