Maximizing biomass utilization: An integrated strategy for coproducing multiple chemicals

Lignocellulosic biomass is one of the viable solutions to alleviate the global warming. However, the limited utilization of biomass majorly focused on cellulose and hemicellulose restricts the economic and environmental feasibilities. To cope with this issue, we proposed an integrated process of co-producing 1,6-hexanediol（1,6-HDO） with tetrahydrofuran and adipic acid from biomass, referred to as strategy A. To compare the impacts of lignin upgrading and feedstock, strategy B, which co-produces tetrahydrofuran alone, and strategy C, which is the traditional route to produce 1,6-HDO from fossil fuels, were used. Heat networks are also designed to reduce operating costs and indirect carbon emissions due to energy consumption, saving 87% and 83% of the heat and cooling requirements, respectively, in strategy A. The market competitiveness of strategy A was evaluated by determining the minimum selling price through techno-economic analysis, and sustainability was thoroughly investigated by quantifying the environmental impacts through both midpoint and endpoint life-cycle assessments（LCAs）.strategy A was found to be the most favorable both economically（UsRDsCHARDOLLAR3,402/ton） and environmentally（-26.9 kg CO2eq.）. This indicates that lignin valorization is not only economically but also environmentally preferred. finally, changes in economic and environmental feasibilities depending on economic, process, and environmental parameters were investigated using sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. The results of these analyses provide valuable insight into bio-based chemical production.

Brazilian industry produces huge amounts of tannery sludge as residues,which is often disposed by landfilling or land ***,consecutive amendment of such composted industrial wastes may cause shifts in soil microbial biomass(sMB) and enzyme *** study aimed to evaluate sMB and enzyme activity after 3-year consecutive composted tannery sludge(CTs) amendment in tropical sandy *** amounts of CTs(0.0,2.5,5.0,10.0,and 20.0 t ha^(-1)) were applied to a sandy *** C and N contents of sMB,basal and substrate-induced respiration,respiratory quotient(qCO_2),and enzyme activities were determined in the soil samples collected after CTs amendment for 60 d at the third *** 3 years,significant changes were found in soil microbial properties in response to different CTs amounts *** organic matter and Cr contents significantly increased with increasing CTs *** and soil respiration peaked following amendment with 10.0 and 20.0 t ha-1 of CTs,respectively,while qCO_2was not significantly affected by CTs ***,soil enzyme activity decreased significantly with increasing CTs *** CTs amendment for 3 years showed inconsistent and contrasting effects on sMB and enzyme *** decrease in soil enzyme activities was proportional to a substantial increase in soil Cr concentration,with the latter exceeding the permitted concentrations by more than ***,our results suggest that a maximum CTs quantity of 5.0 t ha^(-1) can be applied annually to tropical sandy soil,without causing potential risks to sMB and enzyme activity.

Bound states in the continuum （BICs） are perfectly localized resonances despite embedding in the continuum ***,an isolated BIC is very sensitive to the structure ***,we report merging acoustic BICs in a single open resonator,robust against the structure *** find that both symmetry-protected BIC and friedrich-Wintgen BIC are sustained in a single coupled waveguide-resonator *** varying the height and length of the resonator,these two BICs move toward each other and merge into a single one at a critical *** to an individual BIC,the merged BIC is robust against fabrication error because its Q-factor is proportional to ΔL-4,whereΔL embodies the structure *** essence of this extraordinary phenomenon is perfectly explained by the two-and three-level approximations of the effective nonHermitian ***,we present direct experimental demonstrations of the moving and merging of BICs in a coupled 3D waveguide-resonator,which are evidenced by the vanishing of the linewidth of fano resonance in the transmission *** results may find exciting applications in designing high-quality acoustic sources,sensors and filters.

The Paraiba do sul(PsR)and Guandu Rivers(GR)water diversion system(120 km long)is located in the main industrial pole of Brazil and supplies drinking water for 9.4 million people in the metropolitan region of Rio de *** study aims to discern the trace metals dynamics in this complex aquatic *** used a combined approach of geochemical tools such as geochemical partitioning,Zn isotopes signatures,and multivariate *** and Pb concentrations in suspended Particulate Matter(sPM)and sediments were considerably higher in some *** sediment partition of As,Cr,and Cu revealed the residual fraction(f4)as the main fraction for these elements,indicating low *** and Pb were mostly associated with the exchangeable/carbonate(f1)and the reducible(f2)fractions,respectively,implying a higher susceptibility of these elements to being released from *** isotopic compositions of sediments and sPM fell in a binary mixing source process between lithogenic(δ^(66/64)Zn_(JMC)≈+0.30‰)and anthropogenic(δ^(66/64)Zn_(JMC)≈+0.15‰)end *** lighterδ^(66/64)Zn_(JMC)values accompanied by high Zn concentrations in exchangeable/carbonate fraction(Znf1)enable the tracking of Zn anthropogenic sources in the studied ***,the results indicated that Hg,Pb,and Zn had a dominant anthropogenic origin linked to the industrial activities,while As,Cr,and Cu were mainly associated with lithogenic *** work demonstrates how integrating geochemical tools is valuable for assessing geochemical processes and mixing source effects in anthropized river watersheds.

In this paper the effect of integral memory terms in the behavior of diffusion phenomena is studied. The energy functional associated with different models is analyzed and stability inequalities are established. Approximation methods for the computation of the solution of the integro-differential equations are constructed. Numerical results are included.

A hybrid GMDH neural network model has been developed in order to predict the partition coefficients of invertase from Baker's yeast. ATPs experiments were carried out changing the molar average mass of PEG(1500–6000 Da), p H(4.0–7.0), percentage of PEG(10.0–20.0 w/w), percentage of MgsO_4(8.0–16.0 w/w), percentage of the cell homogenate(10.0–20.0 w/w) and the percentage of MnsO_4(0–5.0 w/w) added as cosolute. The network evaluation was carried out comparing the partition coefficients obtained from the hybrid GMDH neural network with the experimental data using different statistical metrics. The hybrid GMDH neural network model showed better fitting(AARD = 32.752%) as well as good generalization capacity of the partition coefficients of the ATPs than the original GMDH network approach and a BPANN model. Therefore hybrid GMDH neural network model appears as a powerful tool for predicting partition coefficients during downstream processing of biomolecules.
