Nanosecond pulse generation is demonstrated in a mode-locked erbium-doped f.ber laser(EDf.) utilizing a samarium oxide(Sm2O3) f.lm. The Sm2O3 f.lm exhibits a modulation depth of.33%, which is suitable f.r modelocking operation. The passively pulsed EDf. operates stably at 1569.8 nm within a pumping power f.om 109 to 146 m W. The train of.generated output pulses has a pulse width of.356 nm repeated at a f.ndamental f.equency of.0.97 mHz. The average output power of.3.91 m W is obtained at a pump power of.146 m W, corresponding to 4.0 nJ pulse energy. The experimental result indicates that the proposed Sm2O3 saturable absorber is viable f.r the construction of.a f.exible and reliably stable mode-locked pulsed f.ber laser operating in the 1.5 m region.

Novel ceramics f.om waste material made of.x) paper ash–(80-x) cullet–20 kaolin clay(10 wt% ≤ x ≤ 30 wt%) were successf.lly synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction technique. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis conf.rmed the presence of.Si, Ca, Al, and f. in the waste material f.r preparing these ceramics. The inf.uence of.the cullet content on the phase structures and the dielectric properties of.these ceramics were systematically investigated. The impedance spectra were verif.ed in the range f.om 1 Hz to 10 mHz at room temperature. The phase of.the ceramics was f.und to primarily consist of.wollastonite(CaSiO_3), along with minor phases of.γ-dicalcium silicate(Ca_2SiO_4) and quartz(SiO_2). The sample with a cullet content of.55 wt% possessed the optimum wollastonite structure and exhibited good dielectric properties. An increase of.the cullet content beyond 55 wt% resulted in a structural change f.om wollastonite to dicalcium silicate, a decrease in dielectric constant, and an increase in dielectric loss. All experimental results suggested that these novel ceramics f.om waste are applicable f.r electronic devices.

We utilize the anomalous dispersion of.planar photonic crystals near the dielectric band edge to control the wavelength-dependent propagation of.light. We typically observe an angular swing of.up to 10°as the input wavelength is changed f.om 1290 nm to 1310 rim, which signif.es an angular dispersion of.0.5°/am （＂Superprism＂ phenomenon）. Such a strong angular dispersion is of.the order required f.r WDm systems. By tuning the incident angle, light beams with up to 20° divergence were collimated over a 25 nm （1285 nm to 1310 nm） bandwidth using a triangular lattice （＂Supercollimator＂ phenomenon）. The wavelength collimating range can be extended f.om 25 nm to 40 nm by changing the lattice f.om triangular to square. These two devices can be realized in the same conf.guration, simply by tuning the wavelength. Sources of.loss are discussed.

Background: microbes live in dynamic environments where nutrient concentrations f.uctuate. Quantif.ing f.tness in terms of.birth rate and death rate in a wide range of.environments is critical f.r understanding microbial evolution and ecology. methods^ Here, using high-throughput time-lapse microscopy, we have quantif.ed how Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants incapable of.synthesizing an essential metabolite (auxotrophs) grow or die in various concentrations of.the required metabolite. We establish that cells normally expressing f.uorescent proteins lose f.uorescence upon death and that the total f.uorescence in an imaging f.ame is proportional to the number of.live cells even when cells f.rm multiple layers. We validate our microscopy approach of.measuring birth and death rates using f.ow cytometry, cell counting, and chemostat culturing. Results: f.r lysine-requiring cells, very low concentrations of.lysine are not detectably consumed and do not support cell birth, but delay the onset of.death phase and reduce the death rate compared to no lysine. In contrast, in low hypoxanthine, hypoxanthine-requiring cells can produce new cells, yet also die f.ster than in the absence of.hypoxanthine. f.r both strains, birth rates under various metabolite concentrations are better described by the sigmoidal-shaped moser model than the well-known monod model, while death rates can vary with metabolite concentration and time. Conclusions: Our work reveals how time-lapse microscopy can be used to discover non-intuitive microbial birth and death dynamics and to quantif. growth rates in many environments.

Experimental study of.natural convection heat transf.r across air layers bounded by a lower hot rectangular and a square corrugated plates to an upper cold f.at plate has been carried out. The surroundings of.this space are adiabatic. The ef.ect of.the angle of.inclination, the aspect ratio, the temperature potential and the Rayleigh number on average heat transf.r coef.icients are investigated within a range of.0°≤75°,, 2.33≤A≤6.33, 10°≤T ≤35°, and 3.29xl04≤RaL≤ 2.29x106. The developed correlation predicts well the experimental data within an error of.±15%.

A new technique to equal channel angular pressing of.tubular samples has been proposed and investigated through experiments and simulations. Def.rmation behavior of.copper tube sample was numerically analyzed during the f.rst pass of.tubular ECAP process. The investigation included the ef.ct of.various tube wall thicknesses on the ef.ctive strain magnitude and strain distribution unif.rmity. It is shown that tube wall thickness of.3.5 mm gives the optimum value f.r strain behavior. In addition, copper tube specimens with 3.5 mm wall thickness have been successf.lly ECAPed up to f.ur passes with the die channel angle of.90 using f.exible polyurethane rubber pad. micro-hardness measurements on both annealed and ECAPed tubes show that 33% and 57% increases in hardness value and also, 50% and 70% reductions in the grain size were achieved af.er the f.rst and f.urth passes respectively. f.rthermore, tube wall thickness measurements show that the process does not change the dimension of.def.rmed specimens.

The Landau damping behavior in a cylindrical inhomogeneous warm magnetized plasma waveguide has been *** radial inhomogeneity f.r dif.erent characteristic lengths（L0） with strong spatial dispersion has been taken into *** analyses have been considered f.r two limits ωce 〈 ωpe and ωce 〉 ωpe. Due to the radial inhomogeneity of.the plasma, all essential equations f.r studying the Landau damping are calculated in the Bessel–f.rrier and dif.erential Bessel–f.rrier expansions. The dependence of.Landau damping on the inhomogeneity, temperature and external magnetic f.eld f.r electrostatic modes is scrutinized and described in detail through numerical calculations. The associated numerical results are presented and discussed.
